Task 1: Discussion of project planning
1.1 Overview of main project
The Edinburgh Tram Project was being conceived in the year 2003 as well as
endorsed by government of Scottish in the year 2007. The project aims to improve over
public transportation in city of Edinburgh. The project is aimed to create safe as well as
sustainable environment within the city. It is appeared that the project was not completed on
scheduled time before 2012 as well as the estimated budget of the project was exceeded from
£545 million as mentioned in the final business case. In spite of project delays, finally the
building of infrastructure was completed in 2013 while it’s testing ongoing pending up to
year May 2014 (Lowe, 2010).
1.2 Primary objectives
The tram project is considered as solution to the traffic problems of Edinburgh since
the year 1980s. The primary objectives of this Edinburgh Tram Project are as follows:
To reduce level of the environmental harms which are caused by traffic by means of
establishment of the transportation system and reduce emissions of carbon
To reduce congestion of traffic by giving alternative usage of the vehicles for the city
To promote of safety as well as security in the transport sector
To promote of the social benefits of the tram project in Edinburgh
To boost economy of the city by simplifying access to the transport facilities
1.3 Project strategy
People strategy in human resource plan is underpinned with the project management
plan of Edinburgh Tram Project. The tram delivery team as well as resources are used to
manage process needed for better cost controlling and inspection of what is to be delivered. It

is provided assurance as well as confidence of the end product delivery as well as quality of
the tram project.
The procurement strategy is applied to Edinburgh Tram Project with an approach to
implement of the project stages. The private sector is looking for best opportunities when the
tram project will come into the business operations (The Guardian ̧2018). The project
strategy of this project helps in avoiding of negative influences for getting success in
implementing the public projects.
The local transport strategy of the Council is overseeing of the implementation of
tram project, included suppliers, ensuring for good quality standards as well as paying to the
suppliers in the implementation process.

1.5 Schedule
The schedule of the Edinburgh Tram Project was estimated to be 3 years started from
2008-2011. However, the project delayed into the project implementation phase due to
various revisions and the project was to be completed by May, 2014. Below table shows the
