ABSTRACT
This present dissertation is about Good and bad faces of the gig economy in context to gig
workers. The aim of the study is to identify the good and bad faces of the gig economy and the
entire research is based on qualitative methods. A study on gig workers in UK. Gig economy has
become popular since many years it was because people were attracted towards the business in
gig economy. Gig economy is the system of free market in which temporary positions are
common and companies contract with independent workers for short period. Greater
independence is another advantage that gig workers enjoyed working as a freelancer in the gig
economy.
The very first benefit that gig workers are enjoying is flexible working as gig economy
allows freelancer to work whenever they want because of several options like working hours,
desire to work, place and there are various options available for gig workers to select. Working
in isolation and lack of cultural commonness are another biggest challenge that gig workers
faced working in gig economy. 20 Gig workers of UK economy has been chosen for study. Form
the above findings it has been summarised that gig economy is a growing concept in UK as most
of the people who wants to work and want to be self-employed can work according to their time
and comfort. Researcher also suggested that gig economy should collaborate with zero base
working hour company that can provide set up a different cabin for all the freelancers so that
they can get the corporate feel and social environment.

TOPIC:
Good and bad faces of the gig economy. Is the gig economy the best deal for gig
workers?
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview of Topic
Gig economy is a free market system in which temporary positions are common and
organisation contract with independent workers for short term engagements. The term gig
economy is a slang work meaning “a job for specified period of time”. Few examples of gig
employees in the workforce could include freelancers, independents contractors, project-based
workers and temporary part-time hires (Kalleberg and Dunn, 2016). In the gig economy,
businesses save resources in terms of benefits, training and office space. Further, they also have
the capability to contract with experts for project who may be too high prices in order to
maintained on staff (Good and Bad Faces of Gig Economy, 2019).
The fundamental benefits of the gig economy to the economy of United Kingdom though
is undoubtedly its impact on jobs. After the financial crash of 2008, people have sought new
opportunities to make money. In United Kingdom, there are many people who are working on a
self-employed basis (Impact of Gig Economy on UK, 2018). There are some popular
organisations like Deliveroo and Uber that represents just a fraction of the market and it also
allows people to work more freely. On the other hand, the development and growth opportunities
are very less, stress is also very high, isolation working and lack of cultural commonness. (Wood
and et.al., 2019) Thus, this present research paper will identify the good and bad faced of the gig
economy in respect to gig workers by applying various techniques and methods.
Background of the Research
This present research is based on the good and bad faces of gig economy in regards with
gig workers. It is true that 21st century has been remarkable for so many things including Inter of
Things (IOT), disruptive innovation, social media, a period of recession and all the rise of gig
economy. Modern market is called as gig economy. There are many advantages that workers
enjoy employees in the business of gig economy such as flexibility of work and time, greater
independence, could earn more and there are variety of jobs available for workers. On the
contrary there is bad face of gig economy which are like no extra benefits, lack of cultural
commonness working in isolation and more stress (Parigi and Ma, 2016). This research will

present the detailed concept of good and bad faced of gig economy. To analyse the current
market scenario in the economy for gig workers would have effective ascertainment over the
importance and having a balanced employment rate.

Rationale:
Gig economy is not a new concept in United Kingdom as the number of self-employed
people in the country is continuously rising from 2001. In 2001, there are approximately 45
percent of people are self-employed but in 2017 more than 15 percent of UK population are
working in gig economy. Thus, the reason for choosing this topic is to understand the good and
bad faced of gig economy as well as to understand the reason of its popularity in UK. In addition
to this, the academic interest of researcher is also another reason that leads to consider this
research topic. As this topic of gig economy will help researcher in to gain knowledge of the
study as well as the knowledge of research methodologies will help in future dissertation.

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
Introduction
This is second chapter of dissertation which provided in-depth knowledge to the chosen
topic. It provided the detailed summary as well as explanation of the research topic which is gig
economy. The information will be collected through authentic books, journals, articles,
government publication and other valid sources. This present literature review is thematic view
in which researcher has formed four themes related to the objectives of the study. The main
purpose of literature review is to highlight the key findings of the research as well as it also
provides users easy access to research on gig economy.
The detailed concept of gig economy.
According to the Parigi and Ma, (2016) the gig economy has become popular since many
years it is because people are attracting towards the business in gig economy. Gig economy is
the system of free market in which temporary positions are common and companies contract
with independent workers for short period of time. The jobs in gig economy are flexible and
company tends to recruit freelancers and independent contractors rather than full-time workers.
In the era of digitalisation, gig economy is increasingly becoming popular especially for those
people who prefer to work from home or work remotely. However, Bryson, (2018) said that, the
freelance work that is commissioned on short term basis is called as gig economy. It has been
determined that gig economy has becomes as essential and growing issue in many nations as not
only United Kingdom and United states but gig economy is flourishing in France, Belgium,
Germany, China, Finland, Austria, India, Poland, New Zealand, Spain, Belarus, Czech Republic
and Canada. However, In United Kingdom, there are many people who are working on a self-
employed basis. There are some popular organisation like Deliveroo and Uber that represents
just a fraction of the market and it also allows people to work more freely,
As per the Ashford, Caza and Reid, (2018) there is one essential factor which is very
significantly required in gig economy is high-tech environment to operate with the customers
using online platforms as well as applications to order books and goods services. Technology is
very essential part in the gig economy because business cannot able to thrive if technological
platform is weak. Take an example of Croatia as it is one of the country that could nit able to

develop gig economy because they could not able to create an effective online platform. But
Gross, Musgrave and Janciute, (2018) argued that, advance and innovative technology and high-
tech environment does not only mean that gig economy will inevitably thrive as there are many
other factors such as regularity, laws and cultural factors have an essential role to play. Take an
example of Japan, still do not regard to gig economy as it is a signifiant issue, save for concern
that gig workers may enjoy less income as well protection of social security.
Advantages of gig economy for gig workers.
As per the findings of Wilson and et.al., (2018) It is reported from various authentic data
that more than 15 percent of UK population are self-employed. People are attracting towards the
gig economy is because of many advantages or benefits which people are gaining from the
business in gig economy. There are variety of advantages that gig workers are enjoying working
with the freelancing businesses. The very first advantage that gig workers are enjoying is flexible
working. Gig economy allows freelancer to work whenever they want. There are many options
like working hours, desire to work, place and there are various options available for gig workers
to choose. Carr and et.al., (2017) argued that, flexibility is considerable but once the freelancer
takes the work, he/she is given deadlines for that in which they have to complete. It they do not
complete the work on timely basis than they will not be pay. People are also taking and
completing there education along with the business only because of flexible working hours.
As per the views of Brinkley, (2016) greater independence is another advantage that gig
workers enjoyed working as a freelancer in the gig economy. As many contracts or gig economy
workers find that they are provided independence to complete their work. In gig economy, there
are no one to look over shoulders, as workers are alone competing their work on given deadline.
Thus, it encourages as well as boost confidence on the workers and provide them ability to
accomplished there work as it is believing that it brings more efficiency in the work. Holmwood,
(2016) argued that, no one is perfect by their own, guidance and monitoring improve the work
and bring accuracy in the work. It is very important to have someone that guides and monitor the
work done. However, Huws and et.al., (2017) said that, gig economy provides variety of jobs to
people as working in company there is similar type of work is given on daily basis which make
them uninterested with that. Gig economy provides different types of project to freelancer every
day that provides intense knowledge and raise the skills. In addition to this, in terms of pay,
freelancer enjoys as they can charge hourly rates for their time and they get extra pay whenever

they do extra work. For example, phone calls and meetings are also billable because time is also
consumed in these activities too.
Challenges gig workers faced working with the gig economy.
As per the views Stewart and Stanford, (2017) gig economy is becoming popular and it is
true but still there are various challenges that gig workers are facing. Gig workers are not getting
any benefits as these are not the part of their packages. Full-time employees enjoy several
benefits like rewards, recognition, fringe benefits, insurance, healthcare and all other benefits
which companies provides to their workers. Thus, gig employees are away from all these
benefits as these benefits. Benefits are very important for the bringing more efficiency in the
work as it motivates them. However, Aloisi, (2015) stated that, there are many companies who
did not removes taxes from the pay-check as it means paying taxes is something that company
needs to plan. The workers in gig economy are responsible for personal expenses which relate to
the working such as mobile phones and laptops. Whereas these can be written off for taxes and it
is very to ensure the deduction. Thus, in order to overcome these challenges, freelancers or gig
workers like to work with the accountants so that all these deductions and other things are look
over by the accountant.
As per the views of Healy, Nicholson and Pekarek, (2017) working in isolation and lack
of cultural commonness are another biggest challenge that gig workers faced working in gig
economy. There is no social and friendliness environment available for gig workers as they do
not go to office. Freelancers usually miss the social groups which are present in offices.
Companies organise parties, tea break talks, appraisal functions and many others which is very
important for a human being. Gig workers work in isolation as there are no parties and function
organised for them. It is true that it adds flexibility but on the other hand, it also causes
separation from society and people. However, Howard, (2017) stated another bad face of gig
economy which has become challenging for gig workers is more stress as they have to
continuously working to find the next gig. These things lead to high stress as they do not feel
steady as well as secure in their employment. In addition to this, they also face unexpected
changes such as changes in their pay or being let go. It is true that stress is not at all good for the
health and life of any person. However, De Stefano, (2015) articulated that, workers are not
given any training and skill development opportunities as they have to manage there skills and
learning by their own.

Ways for bringing improvement in the working conditions of the gig workers.
According to the Webster, (2016) as the growth of gig economy is on highest pace
nowadays, so it is also very important to alter the bad face of gig economy into good face.
Workers in gig economy is facing serious challenges that is directly influencing the personality
and career development. The best way to improve the working conditions of gig workers is that
freelancing companies could make contract with Zero-hour contract base firms as these
enterprises provides environment like other employees but have flexible working hours. These
companies render all the corporate environment like parties, teas-breaks, social environment,
friends, colleges and all other elements which overcome the challenge of isolation working and
lack of culture commonness. Thus, this is the best way to improve the working conditions of gig
workers.
As per the findings of Hunt and et.al., (2018) gig economy should plan budget for
workers like planning of retirement, insurance, healthcare benefits etc. as these policies is also
beneficial for the freelancing companies as they find loyal workers which is important assert for
the company. As per the Graham and et.al., (2017) training and skill development opportunities
are also one of the best ways to improve the working condition as well as to bring more
efficiency in their work. Today, technology has been the great advancement and innovation.
Freelancing companies can also provide training through online such as CBT computer-based
learning, e-learning, distance learning where the guidance, instruction or knowledge everything
is communicated through internet
CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methods
The researcher uses mainly two types of methods in carrying out the research. There are
two types of research methods which are quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative methods are
used when researcher needs to identify the problem by generating quantitative values. This
method is used to measure opinion, attitude and behaviour in numerical terms and take wide
range of sample to draw conclusions. The qualitative data whereas deals in understanding the
issue and formulating hypothesis based on understanding of attitudes, beliefs and opinions
(Bulmer, 2017). These data are mostly semi structured and take small size of sample to draw
conclusions and use common methods like observation and interview etc.
Document Page
The researcher has used qualitative method of research by taking small sample of data
and used questionnaire as techniques to draw conclusion which has helped the researcher in
identifying good and bad faces of gig economy.
Research approach
Research approach defines the plan and procedures for research from wide assumptions
to selecting methods of collecting data, analysing them and interpreting them by making
decisions that are sensible ( (Manyika, and et.al., 2016). There are two types of research that can
be followed by researcher in which one is deductive approach which draw references from
general to specific and collects data which is used to evaluate hypothesis related to theory that
already exists. It believes that when the base of study is true the conclusion drawn out from that
theory is also true. The other approach is inductive approach which goes from specific to general
and collects data based on themes, patterns and use those in logical framework and forms new
theory by modifying existing theory.
The researcher has used inductive theory of research as based on specific theme
researcher will develop new theory which goes from specific to general.
Research Design
It is the framework that defines techniques used by researcher to mix different essentials
of research in logical manner to handle the problem of research efficiently. The research design
can be of many types which includes Descriptive design which deals in describing particular case
and design the research based on that case or theory. Experimental design used in establishing
relation between cause and effect where independent variable affect dependent variable. Co
relational design used in establishing relationship between two variables that are connected.
The researcher has used Descriptive research design in which theory is described based
on data collected, analysed and interpreted by researcher and this identified good and bad faces
of gig economy.
Research philosophy
Philosophy of research deals with development of knowledge and source of knowledge.
It depicts the ways that how data are need to be collected and used in the research. It deals with
formulating hypothesis and assumptions (Research philosophy 2019). The research philosophy
includes positivism which take large sample to draw conclusions and measure quantitative data
with effective structure. The other philosophy is realism which choose data according to the

matter of the subject. Pragmatism deals with mixed data and use multiple designs in carrying out
research and at last interpretivism which is used to investigate qualitative data and uses small
samples of data.
The researcher has used interpretivism as it deals with small sample of qualitative data.
Sampling
It is process of selecting group of people for research to carried out. It is difficult to study
the whole population that is why the researcher take a part of population to research a particular
topic. Sampling can be done from two ways which are probabilistic and non-probabilistic. The
first type occurs when population is homogeneous in nature and each individual has a equal
chance to get selected (Jackson, 2015). The latter one deals with population which does not
know the probability of beings selected and researcher specifically select the members.
The researcher has used probabilistic sampling under which random sampling has been
used by selecting 25 gig workers of UK economy.
Data collection
It is the method of collecting data from the population which is selected by two means
either primary data or secondary data. Primary data includes interview, survey and
questionnaires which are gathered by researcher at the first place. It is more accurate and
reliable. Secondary data whereas means when someone else has collected the data earlier and the
process is quick and easy and includes news articles, journal books etc.
The researcher has used both the data in which he took 25 gig workers of UK economy
and with the help of questionnaire tried to be identified good and bad faces of gig economy and
other information was collected from secondary data included journal and articles.
Data analysis
The process of systematic applying logical techniques to describe and evaluate data. For
analysing the data, the researcher needs to have skills and need to draw unbiased inferences. It
helps in formulating hypothesis and solving the issue efficiently (Data analysis 2019). Data
mining, business intelligence are few methods used to analyse the data. The data can be analysed
either by quantitative or qualitative means.
The researcher has used qualitative data analysis under which researcher has used
thematic analysis which focuses on fixed themes and patterns presented in the data. It helps in
Document Page
describing data in a efficient way. The researcher has used graphs and tables to inculcate theme
analysis.
Ethical consideration
The research has been carried out by researcher which is free from all the biases and used
validated data without forcing workers by threatening them (Kalleberg, 2016). The researcher
was honest and respectful throughout the research and conducted the research with full
transparency and decency.
Research limitation
The research limitation faced by the researcher was cost issue which was incurred in
collecting data and analysing them, but it was managed by the researcher by creating and
segregating different cost associated with various activities according to their time of occurrence.
Resource issue also emerged as a critical issue of the research as the researcher was out of
money but it was eventually managed by the researcher (Abraham, and et.al., 2016). The other
limitation that the researcher has faced by time issue, the time was less, and study was broad but
by making perfect time table the questionnaires to workers were distributed in time and the
results were drawn in time.

collaboration with zero base working hour company that can provide set up a different cabin for
all the freelancers who work from home in the office itself so that the zero base company's
manager can appreciate and motivate the workers to work harder. There are 8 gig workers who
are suggesting that gig economy should plan budget for extra benefits to freelancer so that the
motivation is enhanced and 6 are advising to provide training development opportunities for
better working condition.
CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusion
Form the above research it is concluded that gig economy is a growing concept in UK as
most of the people who wants to work and want to be self-employed can work according to their
time and comfort. The gig economy consists of both good and bad aspects which was concluded
in the research. The good aspect of gig economy is that it has no barrier of entry and exit and
anyone who is willing to work can work. It allows workers to have flexible working hours in
which they can work according to their time and comfort. The individual has number of jobs to
choose from in allows greater independence to work as there is no supervision of work. It allows
individuals to earn in their free time and even after when they have fixed job, they can earn
additional money. The bad aspect of gig economy was also highlighted in the report as it lacks
supervision of work, lacks motivation and appreciation which decreases the efficiency of
workers etc.
The researcher highlighted the challenges faced by gig economy which were isolation as
mostly of the individual when working from home felt lack of motivation and praise and needed
supervision which was not possible in gig work. The other challenge faced by the workers was
stress as there is no one to make them understand the work and everyday they need to find work
for themselves create tension and stress for individuals. The most important challenge is that the

workers are provided with no benefits in the company which create sense of dis interest among
the gig workers.
The researcher concluded that gig economy helps even women who has time limitation
can also work from home based on their working capability. It has created vast number of
employment opportunities for the people of UK. It stated that gig economy is flexible In nature
and people consider it better from working in MNCs as the work load and the pressure is too
high for the individual when working in big corporations. Although the condition of gig workers
is yet to be improved and the research is focused on giving equal status, bonuses, incentives,
holidays to the gig workers same as regular workers
The researcher has summarised that the concept of gig economy is developing and will
develop even more and will create more employment opportunities that will aid to economic
development but it has a long way to go and has lot of scope of improvement which will develop
this concept even more.
Recommendation
From the above analysis and findings researcher recommended some ways to bring
improvement in the working conditions of gig workers which are as follows-
As the gig economy is continuously growing in UK yet the workers working in gig
economy lacks appreciation and motivation as they do not get office environment and praise
from their superiors. This is the reason why company should collaborate with zero base working
hour company that can provide set up a different cabin for all the freelancers who work from
home in the office itself. The zero base company's manager can appreciate and motivate the
workers to work harder and can boost their morale which will increase their efficiency, speed as
well as loyalty towards the company.
The gig workers do not get any benefits and incentives as such and just get the money
value of what they work from home for the company. The company should avail bonuses and
benefits to the gig workers by giving them a holiday package or giving them monetary incentives
or by inviting them to office parties and to make them feel as a part of the company (Prassl,
2018). The extra incentives increase their morale and motivates them to work harder.
The gig employees are often side-lined by the company which creates bad impression on
the workers about the company. The company should focus on development of gig workers by
considering them as a part of the company. The company should use video calling, conferences

to communicate with the workers in case they are having problem related to work and having
difficulty in understanding the work.
The company should take care of tax payments by gig workers as most of the companies
do not consider tax while giving pay checks to the gig workers. The company should make some
amendment on the tax payment of the gig workers to decrease their burden.
The company should also provide personal expenses to the gig workers for their cell phones,
laptops etc. so that workers can put in their best efforts (Bryson, 2018).
The gig workers as discussed face stress in finding new work daily and mostly do not feel
secure in the job so to avoid this feeling the company should put some efforts in removing stress
of the workers by providing them with meditation and yoga assistance etc.
The company should have small number of highly skilled superiors who manages gig
workers and can assist them with the best solutions and can create healthy relationship of trust
between company and gig workers.
The company should enforce holiday and sick pay to gig workers. In case the gig worker
is sick and cannot complete the work the company should pay some amount of money to the
worker which creates interpersonal relationship between them and leads to harmony in work and
retain the workers (Parigi and Ma, 2016).
Personal reflection
I have learned about the concept of gig economy which I was not aware about before
conducting this research. I came to know about Gig economy that it is a free market system in
which temporary positions are common and organization contract with independent workers for
short term engagements. I came to know about various works that come under gig economy
which is free lancer, independent contractors etc. I came to know about this emerging concept
which is boosting the development of the economy and creating employment opportunities. As I
was working on this research project I used to believe that gig working is a new concept and is it
beneficial, however after considering the fact I came to know that gig economy is essential part
of the society as most of the women does not get to work outside because of house responsibility
therefore this work help them to work from home regardless of coming to office daily which
saves their time and efforts.
As I was conducting research I met many individuals and asked them their opinions and
perception about the concept in which most of the people were positive but other people were

negative as well as few people believed that it lacks motivation as there is no supervision and
guide to solve our queries. Other people believed that yes it will grow even more as it save time
and effort. It may be more accurate to suggest that it depends on person to person that how they
see gig economy as n what are their perception about the economy, it is good or bad.
While doing the research I had faced a lot of problems like I did not have enough time to
complete the research, if I would have had time I would have been asked asked the questionnaire
to more people to get better results. Although the individuals I questioned were pretty confident
about their answers therefore it helped me in getting efficient results. The other limitation faced
my me was cost issue as I did not had enough money to conduct research but my tutor helped me
a lot in carrying out this research and even helped me with financial support whenever I required
that. Earlier people were not so open in answering the question and I had to made a lot of efforts
in convincing them and later on they agreed to answer the question and I carried on my research.
However even after facing a lot of troubles and problems I conducted my research with utmost
effectiveness and got the best results.
For answering question I developed an questionnaire for gig workers which was properly
constructed and was very easy to understand. I distributed the questionnaire to each and every
gig worker on my own and made them explain each and every question to avoid confusion. They
answered the question and depicted their views in order to give their opinions on gig economy. I
have conducted research methodology in which I used qualitative data to have theoretical
understanding of the research ad used primary and secondary data which has gave me clear idea
about the issue as well as its emergence.
This report helped me in understanding the concept of gig economy , its advantages and
the areas of improvement that the companies can adopt in improving their performance. It helped
me in understanding all the answers of the objectives of the research. This study helped me in
increasing my knowledge, intellectual level, confidence as well as my communication skills and
also helped me in achieving the objectives I wanted to achieve.
Communicating with individuals working for companies operating in gig economy made
me understand their work and increased my knowledge about the concept. Yes I agree to the
point that it lacks motivation as for doing any work the employees need to be motivated but this
is the biggest issue in gig economy. Although I have suggested some ways like companies can
contract with zero working hour companies which will motivate the workers by providing them

individual cell in which they can be supervised and an work in flexible hours or by solving their
queries on video call conferencing to make their work easy and subtle.
