In June this year, a proposal was put forward to education ministers from all Australian States
and Territories to ban mobile phones during school hours in an effort to tackle cyberbullying
and distraction in the classroom. The proposal follows a decision to implement bans by both
Victoria and New South Wales. Critics argue such a ban is a naive approach to address social
issues and ignores the benefits of mobile smart phones in educational settings. Should
Australian schools ban mobile phone access and use during school hours?
Introduction:
Mobile phones have become an extremely resourceful item in the dynamic, modern
world. In the present times, mobile phones create the foundation for communication (Ayres,
Mechling & Sansosti, 2013). Even though mobile phones have been banned in the classroom
setting, this step proves to be more harmful than beneficial for the students (Baran, 2014).
Moreover, many teachers have found that the use of mobile phones is highly beneficial for
the students (O'bannon & Thomas, 2016). Furthermore, in today’s times, mobile phones are
not just a means to call someone, rather they provide hoards of information that the student
may require (Shoaib et al., 2015). Mobile phones also prepare the students for the modern
world, where these phones are an essential and vital part of life (Ekanayake & Wishart,
2015). Thus, the use mobile phones during school hours should not be abolished.
