INTRODUCTION
Building high performing teams are very important for the organization because it will
help in the success of the company. It provides understanding that why the team is formed and
what is the motive behind forming the team. Teams should have the knowledge and skills so that
the task can be accomplished. When the team is formed it facilitates effective communication in
such a manner that decision-making is done and problems get solved effectively. Trust should be
built among members which will deliver high performance because if the team members will
trust each other than only it can eliminate building conflicts, along with the trust cooperation
should also be there within team members every member should cooperate with the other so that
work will complete fast and deadlines can met (Hung, 2020). Planning is very important when it
comes to high performance, planning include managing time, quality etc. of the work. This study
will discuss the review of theories of team work and how effective teams can achieve the results
and also include theory of team leadership. High performing team will be explained with the
help of stages of high performance and Belbin theory of team work will be taken for explaining
team working and in the leadership part behavioural theory of leadership will be explained.
Further it will do team analysis which the leader has personal experience with the help of
Tuckman theory. The experience when the leader has handled the team, it will also show the
challenges which the leader faced while team handling and also the opportunities which the
leader got by managing team. It will also discuss abilities of a team leader using theories, the
study will identify the strength and areas which will give benefit to the leader.
1. Critical review on key theories of nature and leadership in the organisation
Team work shows the combining effort, working in a group to accomplish the common goal or
to attain the given task and target (Salas and et.al, 2018). Team work often gives the best result
because every member of the team, contributes their all efforts to attain the goal. The main
objective of any organisation behind creating a team is to develop problem solving and decision-
making process of the employees. It will also increase the ability and capacity of the employees,
and they can contribute in the planning process of the organisation. Another aim of the
organization is to reduce the situation of conflicts from the organisation. But the team has to
perform certain functions in-the organization.

One of the most important function of a team is to sort out problems and make appropriate and
useful decisions for the organization (Briggs and et.al, 2019). In every team leader plays a vital
role, the foremost aim of the leader is to get the best thinking from the teammates. The team have
to work together and have to be agreed on a same point so that the task can get accomplish on
given time duration.
Trust
Decision making is only possible when the team member trust each other and share their views
and opinions on the given task and goal. Lack of trust can reduce the performance of team and it
will consume more time in result the cost for the organisation (Bragadóttir and et.al, 2019). For
example organisation a build a team to compete the task in 15 days but die to lack of trust,
teammates don't share relevant information to each other and don't corporate in result the work
didn't get complete in 15 days and now the organization has to put extra cost to finish the work
and it will take more time as well. So the trust among teammates is very necessary for the
organisation.
Synergy
The most important function of team is to create synergy. The meaning of synergy is 2+2=5,
means when the teammates are working together then the generated result will be more in
comparison when they do their job individually (Zeiler, 2018). So the main objective of the
organisation behind forming a team is that the organisation want more work with productivity
from fewer employees. With the help of synergy, individual employees also get a chance of
future growth, they may learn new skills and techniques from other employees as well.
Conflicts resolution
As per the (Driskell and et.al, 2018) Occurrence of conflict is very usual in every team,
whenever the gap arises in the communication and trust breaks down, conflict takes place. But
the another function of an effective team is that they easily sort out the conflicts by talking to
each other. Here, the leader may guide the team on which point they are going wrong and how
they can resolve the issues and problems arises in the team and do not lose their interest towards
the work. By applying various team work theory, team may attain their goal
. Besides these function, individual must put their all the efforts so that team work can help them
in their upcoming future as well, they can learn many qualities from working in a team such as –
effective communication, analytical thinking, decision-making approach and leadership quality
useful decisions for the organization (Briggs and et.al, 2019). In every team leader plays a vital

hand according to (Sanyal and et.al, 2018), employees don't learn any new thing by Woking in a
team although they have to work more and have to face situations of conflict as well. In team
work, people invested their time to complete a task but even though they have to suffer from

Behavioural leadership theory
This leadership theory states about the behaviour of leader and make assumption about
the traits of leaders can get copied by other leaders easily (Theories of Leadership, 2020).
Basically this theory give more focus on observations, actions and reactions of leader and
followers. This theory states that the leaders are made not born. Suppose, organisation A
follows behavioural leadership theory in their organisation, so the behaviour of leader affects the
performance of other workers. If the behaviour of the leader is supportive and cooperative, it will
reflect on the performance of the teammates, they will perform their job efficiently and achieve
all the targets on time. This leadership theory follows ethics and values of the company as well.
Contingency theory:
According to (Nurjanah and et.al, 2021) This theory says that one leadership style is not
applicable in all the situations, the situation can be influenced by the variables and leader have to
choose leadership style by considering those variables and there are many internal and external
factors which can influence the organization.
The internal and external factors can be technology, size of the company, how the
organization can take opportunities etc. There are three variables how well the leader is accepted
by the employee, job of employee should be explained in detail and what is the authority leader
is having in the organization (McAdam, Miller and McSorley, 2019).
This theory says that firstly the leader should analyse the situation then only should
decide what to do. Organization A has trained there leaders so that they can understand that
which leadership style has to be applied in which situation. Once they have understood this then
there will be no delay in the work. As in the workforce effective leadership is the very important
quality as this quality will also help the employee in future and also helpful in the growth. This
theory also help the company in achieving the goals and objectives and also boosts employee
morale and through that employee become motivated which increase the workforce productivity.
Development of high performing team
Working in a team shows the ability of individual employees to accomplish a common goal.
Team development is a critical phase for an organisation in which they have to divide all the
employees in different teams according to their skills and eligibilities, it is beneficial for the
organisation to put all those employees together who share common interest (Lagedroste and
et.al, 2021). There are some phases to build a team.
This leadership theory states about the behaviour of leader and make assumption about

Tuckman theory:
Forming
In this phase, the employees and members remain excited, positive and anxious. But this kind of
team mates remain dependent on the guidance of the leader (Melnyk and et.al, 2019). They don't
have proper idea about their roles and responsibilities, and how they can contribute to their roles.
Storming
In this stage teammates think individually, members get divided in small groups, in result
conflict and disagreement occurs in the team. The member get distracted from their goal as well.
Leader has to play directive role in this situation to provide clarification so that team can work
together.
Norming
This kind of team members work together and try to achieve the goal on time, so that
organisation don't have to face issues (Driskell and et.al, 2018.). Here the role of leader is to
coordinate to team. Leader has to coordinate the functions of the team and guide them about their
roles and responsibilities.
Performing
Members of this stage, remain focused, enthusiastic, and motivated towards their goal and
cooperate each other (Kerr, 2017). In such situation leader give power to the team so that they
can take decisions own by own.

working
I have learnt and got experience as a leader in company X, in the initial stage of project it
was difficult for me to understand that what the team working is but slowly I started developing
leadership skills into me. I believe that it is the hardest thing in my entire career. Team leader
should be outstanding and have knowledge about the activities or task of the project. He or she
has the ability to complete the task before anyone in the team. I learnt that how to deal with the
pressure when you are the team leader. Being a leader in company X has built confidence in me,
earlier I was very scared when I was addressing any group because of stage fear which I was
having but after I became team leader then daily I have to address my team of 20 people so

slowly that removes audience fear from me (Osagie and et.al., 2018). Being a leader has also
improved my communication skills in terms of verbal and written because I have to
communicate with the team members on daily basis so it has drastically changed my
communication now I communicate more professionally, along with the professional growth my
personal growth has also started after I become team leader (Nurjanah and et.al, 2021). I also
helped team members by giving them knowledge that I had related to the project topic. In the
team of 20 members I had diversified people who have different style of working or different
style when they are facing any issues. I learnt that how to deal with such diversified team so in
the future if I get any diversified team to handle then I will easily handle. Being leader has
changed my overall personality, as per my opinion the leader should not always do majority of
work because otherwise team members will not learn the work, and they will not get serious
about the project. After the project is completed I had also taken feedbacks from my team
members on my leadership skills and majority of feedbacks were positive which shows that I am
a effective leader. When I had lead the team I achieved all the targets which I had given and
didn't miss any deadlines (Han and et.al., 2017). I faced many challenges as I handled different
people and that is now easy to handle because every individual is different and unique in their
own way. It has enhances my level of patience, I was very patient in every situation and try to
solve every issue calmly but one day one of my team member after explaining everything clearly
also made many mistakes and that was the only day that I was angry because it was very
important task and because of his mistakes, whole team miss the deadline. But then I calmed
myself because I understood that being angry and frustrated is not the solution of any problem.
The biggest opportunity is conflicts which prevail within team members and due to that causes
delay in the work. Krenz, Burtscher and Kolbe, (2019) said that To solve issues between team
members is not the easy task as being a team leader you have to listen to every team member yo
cannot take anyone's side, you have to identify every aspect of it then have to give solution to the
problem by making sure that your team member does not feel discriminated. Being a leader bring
lot of pressure because as leader you are responsible for the success or failure of the team. I feel
that if there is any bad news which I have to give to team members was very difficult like
sometimes on Sundays also team members were called so that deadlines can be met so to convey
this to team leader was not easy as it demotivate them and lack of motivation can reduce their
productivity, so I have to convey the bad news in such a manner that their level of motivation did
not drop and news had also delivered. Organizational cultural issues is also one of the challenge,
leader have to make sure that healthy cultural environment is maintained so that cultural
communication now I communicate more professionally, along with the professional growth my
personal growth has also started after I become team leader (Nurjanah and et.al, 2021). I also

lot of pressure because as leader you are responsible for the success or failure of the team. I feel
that if there is any bad news which I have to give to team members was very difficult like
sometimes on Sundays also team members were called so that deadlines can be met so to convey
this to team leader was not easy as it demotivate them and lack of motivation can reduce their
productivity, so I have to convey the bad news in such a manner that their level of motivation did
not drop and news had also delivered. Organizational cultural issues is also one of the challenge,
leader have to make sure that healthy cultural environment is maintained so that cultural

differences can be avoided. Being a leader helps in my career growth because in future it will
become easy for me to if I want to become manager as I had evaluated team members then it will
become easy for me to recruit smart talent, I will be able to find out right candidate for the right
position, it will help me in reducing the error which can be made while recruiting the candidate.
Leadership help me in building time management skill, I learnt that time is very important asset
and if managed it efficiently then can give good results (Sfantou and et.al, 2017). I had started
taking initiative as I the leader and leaders always have to take initiative every time so now in
future I take any initiative I will not hesitate as now I am that much confident and willing to try
new things always as new things will give new experiences and which I will cherish throughout
my life (Oliveira and et.al., 2020). As a leader one have to be a good listener because leaders
have to listen carefully first what the team members are saying then only he or she can give
solution to the problem. I feel that if you listen carefully then it solves half of the problem
because you have understood the problem completely. Apart from this being a leader of the
company I have faced many big issues and challenges, one of the big challenge for me in
company X is my team mates were not having trust in my abilities and potential as I was new to
the company so they were taking me lightly, so this was a big challenge for me that I have to
prove my talent and skills, along with this I have to manage them and allot them different works
and task as per their interest and ability (Ismail and et.al, 2018). Apart from this I have to focus
on my work as well and have to fulfil the expectations of the company, so managing both things
were challenging for me, but I overcome this by using my strength. Being a leader I had to face
different people in the organisation and they all were having different mentality and point of
view some of them were senior to me in experience, so it was difficult for me to make them
understand my way of working. So in this situation my experience was not up top the mark, but
being a leader I had to sort out this issue gracefully so that I do not hurt feeling of any other
person in the organisation or company. Sometimes it happens in the company when the
strategies made by me get failed, goals did not get met on time which is why I had to deliver bad
new to my team, but instead of blaming them, I appreciate their work and encouraged them to
continue their work enthusiastically, and do not let this failure impact their job and work. As per
my experience, I had faced culture issue as well in my team because many people many
subordinates were from different region and culture. So the people were having different habits,
owing to this many time conflicts take place in the company, which directly impact the work

my experience, I had faced culture issue as well in my team because many people many
subordinates were from different region and culture. So the people were having different habits,
owing to this many time conflicts take place in the company, which directly impact the work
culture and productivity and even other employees also get disturbed from their work. So I have
to sort out the situations of conflict also in the company. Apart from this I faced an experience
that the leader must remain humble in every situation, because subordinates also do not want an
arrogant leader with whom they can't discuss their issues and problems. If a leader is humble,
they will influence others and boost their morale instead of focusing on authority (Rahbi and et.l,
2017). As working in company I found that my self confidence get increased, and this is a
healthy and essential characteristics of a leader, if the leader is confident about their decisions
and this will boost confidence in other subordinates as well. They will also not get effect taking
risk. Apart from this the major challenge for me that I have to face anxiety and stress. Be an
effective leader is not an easy task, when I was dealing with a lot of issues and work, getting
stressed is natural. Because when I get stressed I work differently, I don't talk nicely with the
people and this will directly impact my work and also it will affect the work of my team so
whenever I was in stressed it becomes difficult for me to stay calm and focus on work so it was a
challenge for me which I overcome, now I don't take too much stress of any work and remain
calmed in every situation. Apart from this, keeping myself motivated was another challenge for
me, because anyone can face bad days and bad situations in their life. Being a leader I always
have to stay motivated in every situation specially hen the things were going wrong, the progress
of work is slow, and team has to get failure in such situations the question arise on the leader that
may be the plans and strategies implemented by leader is not going in a right direction, to face
such situations it was difficult fir me to stay motivated and also I had to motivate my team
member is inverse situations when the situation is not favourable, I have to remain more
motivated because in such circumstances the entire team looks at me and stay depended on me
and whatever decision taken by me. After that, to keep my team motivated was also a challenge
which I experienced, because it is very important to let the team know about what is the vision
of the company, why we are doing this work, what is the purpose behind this, everything I need
to explain to my team so that they can put their all effort to attain the goal (Raziq and et.al,
2018). Apart from this, I have to guide and mentor my team whenever they needed my advice or
help. Being a leader I can leave all the work on them. So these were my personal experience of
being a leader, some of the qualities of a leader I was having but many news things I have learnt
which will definitely going to help me in my career and in my coming future as well. Apart from

3 Summary
Above assignments help me to enhance my strengths and ability as a leader. Earlier I was not
aware of my strength, potential, abilities and capacity I was not having proper idea about how to
use my strength so that I can take accurate and appropriate decisions for my team and for the
company as well (Easton and et.al, 2018). When I was the leader of company X, at the early
stage of my career I found so many difficulties, I was not having any idea how to handle the
team, how to guide them, what style of leadership I should follow, all these things were a mess
for me but this is one of the quality of a smart leader that they know how to face difficulties and
do not leg behind from the problems so I also follow the same and I face all the challenges which
help me to develop new qualities and skills in me. Being a leader of company X, I become an
effective communicator I was able to deliver my thoughts, opinion and view to the team mates
in a clear and consistently apart from this, being a leader I also develop listening skill in me
which was not in me earlier so active listening was my weakness as I did not listen the opinion of
others and don't give priority to others but now I have changed this behavior of mine. Apart from
this, being a leader of company X, it is my duty to deliver the vision and mission of the
company to the team mates and employees so that they can work accordingly and help the
company to achieve it mission and also the pre- determined goal of the company. It is only
possible when I can speak appropriately and in proper manner so that others can understand what
I want say, because communication skill is one of the important quality of a leader. To make the
employees work according to my way it is necessary for me to have a skill of good planning and
delivering skills earlier this was my weakness I was not good at planning and delivering but after
working at company X, I was able to develop this skill in me, because I got many opportunities
in which I have to make plans and deliver it to my subordinates so that they can perform
accordingly (Pishdadia and et.al, 2020). In the process of planning I also welcome the decisions
of my team member so that they also increase their creativity level and feel special in the
company. Apart from this I always have strength of strategic thinker, I have developed my own
vision, where I want to be in the future, what skills should adopt. This is again an important skill
of a successful leader which makes them different from other and which is my strength. Being a
strategic thinker I always try to gather information from various sources and after analysing such
achieving their goals and objective so that they can grow in their near future.

information I implement them so that it will be beneficial for the company to attain its goals and
aims. Being a strategic thinker, this strength help me to identify the ability and potential of my
subordinates which will help me to allot them a team project because I know which person can
do which thing and this will helpful for them, as well (Belyakova and et.al, 2017). So this is my
another skill that I am good at people management, because I strongly believe that, nobody can
be a leader without follower and leader must have all the armoury to deal with any kind of
situation and on the same time leader have to guide its team mates as well. To manage people at
work I need to encourage the team mates towards their goal and targets and also I have to boost
their morale. Besides this, one of the important skill which is present in me is that I am dedicated
toward my work. Whatever work will be assigned to me I perform that with full dedication and
also motivate other to compete their work with full potential so that we can give better to the
company. So this is the another skill of mine get developed by working as a leader. Apart from
this, I follow some great leaders and their opinions to get motivated and focused towards my
work. I used to take inspiration by reading books, novels and the autobiography of such great
leaders which bring inspiration in me. By this I have developed reading skills in me, this skill
help me to gather new knowledge and information which will help me in every stage of career
and life as well. By getting inspired from such leaders it changes the vision of mine, the way of
seeing the things has totally changed and this habit has benefited to the company as well
(McManus and et.al, 2018). Apart from this, being a leader I got to learn about different
leadership theories such as Authoritarian leader - in this theory, leader imposes their
expectations on the team members but the biggest loop hall of this theory is that there is less
participation of team members, this theory totally kills the innovation and thinking capacity of
the team mates and the input of group also get decreased but the only advantage of this theory is
that it save the time of leader and employees as well because they don't haver to waste time in
thinking and they just have to follow the direction of the leader, but I don't follow such
leadership theory and style as I believe that all the team member should share their opinions and
views. I want every member of my team participate in the process of decision making. Apart
from this I have learnt about the participative leadership theory, as per this theory, the leader
involves all the team mates in making any decisions and team members also feel involved and
engaged in the company. It also boosts their moral and confidence there for I implement this
strategy. It also develops the creativity in the employees and they perform their work
aims. Being a strategic thinker, this strength help me to identify the ability and potential of my
subordinates which will help me to allot them a team project because I know which person can

strategy. It also develops the creativity in the employees and they perform their work
enthusiastically apart from this company may get high productivity of work. But the only draw
back of this approach is that the decision making process becomes lengthy and time consuming.
The another theory which I learnt is delineative leadership style which is popularly known as
Laissez- faire leadership which focuses on the initiation taken by the team members (Ruch and
et.al, 2018). This theory can only get successful when the team members are ready to take
responsibilities and remain competent. But in this approach leader don't give proper command to
employees and only the experienced employees take advantage. Therefore, I don't prefer such
leadership style and approach in the company X. The another leadership style which I got to
know about is transactional leadership style. As the name suggest it states about the transaction
between the leader and its subordinates in this leadership approach, leader uses punishment and
rewards strategy to get the work done by its team members. Punishment can be in the form of
threatening to get kick -off from the job and those employees who perform well get rewards the
form of bonus and promotion but I don't follow such leadership style because it minimises the
creativity and thinking capacity of the employees and also their empathy don't get value apart
from this, the another important leadership approach which I have learnt is transformational
leadership in this leader inspires its team mates and encourage them to attain their individual
goal, this leadership style decreases the employee turnover in the company apart from this, it
increases the morale of the employees as well. Therefore, I have adopted this approach as well.
Being a leader, I analysed many skills such as I was having good leadership skill, which will not
only benefited me but my team and company as well.
Strength
My biggest strength is self –awareness, it is very important skill to be a leader because, a leader
must know themselves fully. A leader must assess themselves clearly such as what should be
their strength, where they need to work hard etc. after knowing this they can guide others. My
another strength is that I have the capacity to analyses any situation, because a leader must
aware about the surrounding situation, being a leader I always know what is going on near me
along with this stay updated about the events near me. Besides this, my another big strength is
communication skill, I have excellent communication skill through which I can easily share my
view, opinions and thoughts to others and I can easily explain my team member about their work
along with they the also understand my point of view easily (Ruch and et.al, 2018). Due to this
they can work as per my advice and it helps them to achieve their targets and the aim of the
back of this approach is that the decision making process becomes lengthy and time consuming.

they can work as per my advice and it helps them to achieve their targets and the aim of the
company is also get attained. Apart from this, the major skill which very leader must have is
conflict resolution skill, whenever any conflict take place it reduces the productivity and also
create stress at the work place, through which other employees also get disturbed. To resolve
conflict peacefully is also an art and strength of a leader. Apart from this, I have developed many
new skills while working as a leader, the new skill which I got is I learnt the ability to work with
different people of different mentality who follow different approaches in their life. So by
interacting with different types of people I develop new skills to read the mentality of people.
Apart from this, the another strength which I found in me is I become able to take courageous
decision in every difficult situation and I am, able to lead my team efficiently in difficult
situations. Along with this, I become an active listener, I listen to the idea and suggestions given
by my team mates even I can easily bring solution of their problem as well. Except this, I give
credit to those team members who perform their job dedicatedly, this is the another strength of
mine that I appreciate the work done by others. The most important skill which any leader
possess is problem solving skills, being a leader I had to face a lot of difficult situation and
problems, so the leader must know how to handle situation instead of blaming others that who
did this, why the idea did not get executed, I focus on getting solution of the problem.
Weakness
Leadership is not easy, being a leader I have faced many difficulties which was my weakness.
The very first thing which I faced is lack of trust all my subordinates were not trusting me
because I was a new leader they were having doubts in my skills (Bednár and et.al, 2020). The
another loop hall which I faced at some point I got failed in setting clear objectives for my team
mates, which I am trying to overcome. Multitasking has somehow become my weakness because
to finish different works and targets at a time I lost focus on single work and it directly impacts
the productivity.
