INTRODUCTION
Business communication is referred as sharing of information among individuals outside
and within a company. This communication is carried out to gain commercial benefits for the
organisation. It can be specified as passing of information and messages by people within their
business (Adekola and Sergi, 2016). This assignment is written in context with Sport Love which
is a London based sports and leisure business. This report will cover principles and purposes of
communication strategy. Beside this, characteristics to be an effective listener and speaker are
mentioned. At last, own strengths and weaknesses in communication are discussed.
TASK 1
Identify principles and purpose of Communication strategy
Communication strategies are those tactics which allows an individual or an organisation
to communicate and exchange information with other party in an appropriate way. These can
either be visual, verbal or non-verbal. Collaborating all these strategies benefits an organisation
in achieving desired outcomes (Austin and Pinkleton, 2015). In order to resolve the issue of poor
communication with the help of communication strategy, HR director of Sports Love can adopt
below mentioned principles and purposes of communication:
Principles of communication strategy:
In order to formulate effective communication strategy, these principles of
communication are required to be considered by HR director in Sport Love.
Principle of clarity: In order to maintain effective communication, it is essential for
sender to convey idea, information or message in a clear manner. Messages are required
to be passed out without any ambiguity. HR director in Sport Love needs to consider this
principle so that employees can clearly understand what they are told. A clear message
will helps in resolving the issue of ineffective communication in Sports Love (Bovée,
Thill and Raina, 2016).
Principle of attention: To make a communication effective, it is essential for receiver to
give proper attention towards the given information or message. Different people have
varied emotions, behaviour and attention due to which they perceive messages according
to their own perspectives. In this regard, HR direction and other seniors must give proper

attention towards the actions and words of employees. This will help in solving problem
due to mismatch communication.
Principle of feedback: This principle is very essential to make communication effective
within an organisation. Timely feedbacks must be collected form employees of Love
sport. This will helps in understanding difficulties and issues faced by them in more
appropriate manner (Dozier, Grunig and Grunig, 2013). This principle will benefit HR
director of Sport Love to implement new policies and procedures so that workers can
interact with one another in a proper way.
Principle of Consistency: According to this principle, communication is required to be
consistent with plans, policies, objectives and programs of organisation. If information,
message and interaction will be in conflict with policies of Sport Love, then employees
will face problem in implementing them. Hence, HR direction of company needs to
follow consistent communication so that workforce can interact in an appropriate manner.
Purposes of communication strategy
Main purpose associated with communication strategy are given below,
considering these purpose will helps HR director in Sport Love to sustain effective
communication strategies within workplace:
Sharing of information: This communication strategy will allow HR director in Sport
Love to maintain an organised flow of information at workplace. Workforce at different
levels must be informed about the targets and objectives of company. Employees and
employers are required to use simple language with one another & clients. This will
helps in enhancing customer experience due to which revenues and sales of company will
increase (Grunig, 2013).
Enhanced coordination: Another purpose of communication strategy is to enhance
coordination within employees. In order to satisfy the needs of customers and providing
them high customer experience, an organisation needs high coordination. Without proper
coordination and interaction, it is not possible for the workforce in Sport Love to work in
a unified and systematic manner. It is the duty of HR director to acknowledge this aspect
so that effective knowledge can be sustained at workplace.
Developing good human interaction: With the help of this communication strategy,
managers, directors, employees and other staff members are able to share their ideas &

perception with one another. If HR director will consider this purpose while formulating
communication plan then it will assists the workforce in understanding complexities
faced by another employees in a clear way. Due to which relation and communication
between employees will improve which will helps in enhancing organisational
productivity (Karpen, Bove and Lukas, 2012).
General characteristics be an effective listener and speaker during meetings
There are some characteristics which must be incorporated by participants and employees
so that they can became effective speaker & listener. In case of Sport Love, company is facing
issues due to poor communication. This is impacting their customer base and revenues in a
negative manner. Following general characteristics will benefit the employees and employer to
maintain appropriate communication and interaction within workplace. In this regard, some
characteristics are stated below:
Characteristics to be an effective listener:
In order to overcome communication and interaction issues, workforce in Sport Love is
required to be good listeners so that they can understand the perception of customers and other
employees in a more proper manner. In this regard, some characteristics are stated below:
An effective listener is not judgemental and prefers to think different aspects before
making a decision or judgement. For example, before taking a decision, HR direction in
Sport Love is needed to listen the opinion of different employees in a sincere way (Park,
Sawy and Fiss, 2017). This will benefit the company in adopting those policies which
will helps in enhancing their revenues and profitability.
To be an effective listener, an individual is required to fight with different distractions
that can hinder the interaction and communication between a speaker and listener. In this
regard, employees and employers in Sport Love needs to give their proper attention to the
speaker by avoiding distractions like phone calls, text messages etc. It will benefit them
in learning new concepts and ideas that will enhance their working potential.
Characteristics to be an effective speaker:
There are some characteristics which must be incorporated by an individual to be a good
speaker. To be an effective speaker, workforce working in Sport Love must have below
mentioned characteristics:

To be an effective speaker, an individual requires high confidence and presentation skills.
Having high confidence will allow the workforce in Love Sport to perform complex
business actives without facing any complexities (Räsänen and Laine, 2013).
Another characteristic of an effective speaker is passion which is referred as enthusiasm
towards something. An effective speaker has the characteristic to communicate and
interact with listeners in a passionate way so that messages and information among both
parties can be shared in a robust manner (van Ginkel and et. al., 2015). In case of Sport
Love, if employers will be effective speakers, they will be able to guide workforce in an
appropriate way. This will benefit the company in attaining their desired goals and
targets.
TASK 2
Strengths and weaknesses in terms of written and oral communication in business context
Written and oral communication is a manner by which required message, information or
idea is passed on to listeners. Business communication methods are required when a firm wishes
to interact with another firm or workforce interacts with one another employees for business
purposes. These are efficient means to interact in meetings, conferences, interview and
gatherings.
Strength and weaknesses in term of oral communication:
Strength: As a human resource executive in Sport Love, I have effective verbal
communication due to which I am able to represent my perceptions and points in front of
employees & consumers in a desired manner. As I am good in expressing my opinion,
employees in organisation feels comfortable around me. As I have a pleasant voice, this helps me
in generating a positive impact on listeners which helps me in performing my business activities
in a proper manner.
Weakness: Other than above mentioned strengths, I have some weaknesses while
communicating verbally. One of my weakness is misinterpretation of words due to which I am
not able to clearly define my opinions Lack of clarity makes it difficult for workers to
understand what they have to perform. This results in mismanagement of work. Other weakness
faced by me during oral communication is my speaking speed. I have a problem of quick talking
that because a problem for my subordinates and colleagues.

Strength and weaknesses in term of written communication:
Strength: I have appreciable written communication skills. I prefer to write every
important appointment, meeting and tasks in accordance with their priority. This acts as a
remainder and record for me in a structured manner about business operations performed by me.
Due to good writing skills I am able to execute different plans in a proper way.
Weaknesses: During written communication I faces some weaknesses. I lack focus and
substance while writing content due to which I feel I am not good enough to prepare documents
and business reports.
CONCLUSION
From above mentioned report, it has been concluded that to achieve organisational
objectives and targets, effective business communication is required. There are different
principles of communication such as clarity, consistency etc. and purpose of communication i.e.
sharing of information. These principles and purposes helps in sustaining a positive
communication and interaction within workplace. There are some features and characteristics
which must be incorporated by a person such as passion, confidence, patience, listening ability
so that it can became an effective listener or speaker.
