One of the integral parts of communication involves interpersonal interaction. The
existence of interpersonal communication came into being when the concept of exchanging
thoughts or ideas from one person to another occurred. The concept of interpersonal
communication is one in which the kind of interaction exists with individuals conversing their
ideas, feelings, information or emotions on a face to face level. This can be in the form of verbal
forms or non-verbal forms. Interpersonal communication thus, is not just about what is being
communicated and what is being received but also involves the manner in which it has said, the
body language which is used when conversing and the facial expressions involved.
Slide 5:
What is involved in interpersonal communication?
The skills of interpersonal communication can be enhanced through the manner of
knowledge, practice and feedback. This form of communication also takes place when there are
two or more people in surroundings and are aware of one another’s presence in the area despite
of how unpremeditated or unintentional it is (Okoro, Washington & Thomas, 2017). It may at
times not be in the form of speech however, it could also be through expression, gesture or body
movement. An essential factor though, must be that there needs to be a message involved and
should be sent by the sender and received by the other end by the receiver.
The topic of interpersonal communication serves to be important for graduate recruits in
engineering/management because of three major reasons discussed ahead.
Slide 6:
Permits clarity for effective communication
One of the core reasons why interpersonal communication would serve to be significant
for the graduate recruits in management/engineering is merely for allowing effective
communication between themselves and their employers. Effective communication would be the
foundation of success within corporate jobs and in order to become a decent communicator, the
recruit needs interpersonal skills. These skills are essential for the establishment of relationships,
which are brought up such as the one between yourself and the employer, and with the
workmates. This would lead to a common exchange of information, ideas and skills.

Within management or engineering sectors, the processes could be quite technical which
brings in the presence of statistical data to be shared with people who may not possess a
background in the same discipline (Adigwe & Okoro, 2016). Hence, the capability of offering
suitable customer service would include listening and comprehending the point of view of the
individual who is conversing with you and be able to anticipate and solve problems. This
capability can therefore allow the business to run more smoothly with correct interpersonal
skills.
Slide 7 (Cont.):
Effective communication will only be fostered through the use of interpersonal communication
which must be carried out through the right ways. Furthermore, the establishment of mutual
consideration and respect is found for the opinions of one another at the workplace along with
the input each worker is contributing through the use of interpersonal interaction. The
communication conducted through this manner entails more fluid performance of duties while
the worker operates as well a better management and punctual completion of tasks.
Interpersonal skills allows the employee of a background of management or engineering to be
placed in an environment in which the managers or colleagues will far likely perceive them as
approachable people (Chambers, 2018). Consequently, the co-workers would be comfortable
through effective participation and interaction with the recruits and would be more willing to
seek their advice and assistance.
Slide 8:
Encouragement of Teamwork
Another essential aspect for graduate recruits in the discipline of management or
engineering would possess through interpersonal communication is the ability to be comfortable
functioning within teams. The technical skills for such professionals are not always enough to
ensure their successful career as engineers would need to be able to operate as a member of a
team, be able to think critically and also possess strong work ethic (Willmot & Colman, 2016).
In the eyes of the recruiters, the soft skills is what will differentiate the engineering or
management candidates from another and allow them to function effectively within teams.
