IntroductionThe study presents a case study on a large retail firm considering its product line which isenlisted within the top ten large companies. The selected company is Marks & Spencers since itsannual sales is huge and almost 12030 hits have been received from Orbis database.The studyalso presents an article writing in a 4 slided presentation which shows the purpose and summaryof the article. Examining resources as well as capabilities that provide basis for competitive advantageto the company and identifying the core capabilities that underpin the product lineOne of the most extensive resources Possessed by Marks and Spencer has been its labour forcethat is determined by the large number of employees people in the company all over the, it couldbe stated that the company has eventually grown due to such a huge workforce that had beenformed in the past years. Due to the presence of a huge labour force in the company it has beeneasier to encounter 4 the competition existed in the market. Product line that is underpinned bythese core capabilities or resources has been ‘linen with love’. During the period of mid 1998marks and Spencers gained a positive share in the market and then enjoyed a broad competitiveadvantage as compared to other retail firms existing in the same market. Another huge resourcethat they have is the available funds or financial capability that helps it to sustain the edge ofcompetition and overcome the constraints of their production. In words of Teece, (2014, p.651),the use of subsequent capabilities as well as large resources, Marks & Spencers have beensuccessful in achieving its goals as well as objectives as decided earlier. The other various capabilities that are identified relating to the company’s development involveempowering of manufacturers/suppliers with the responsibilities of designing, management ofthe relationships with its suppliers as well as brand management. As per the suggestions of Lunet al. (2016, p.187), the company Marks and Spencer even provides or possess capabilities likeexcellent working conditions and brilliant customer service. They provide the facilities ofattractive promotions and offers which attracts huge customers across the world. They alsoguarantee best product quality and hence have a corporate brand image for which the customersfeel loyal to the company. The products that they sell are one of the best qualities and hencepossess brand loyalty.
