Chapter 3: Methodology Chapter3.1 Method of data collection: This study is adopting a non-experimental correlation research design by using aquantitative research approach. This research only utilizes the relationship between twovariables without manipulating independent variables or changing any of the extraneousvariables of research. According to Saunders et al. (2013), quantitative method is commonly adopted to measuredata that are numerical, statistical, and mathematical in nature. There are differenttechniques that can be used to collect quantitative data such as internet polls, experimentcalculations, and field surveys including questionnaires. A field survey will be conducted inthis research through self-administered questionnaires. The key purpose of questionnairewill be to utilize the information about relationship between supply chain management andperformance of firms in textile industry of Pakistan (Gray, 2013).Figure 3.1: Onion model of research methodology (Saunders et al. 2013)

3.2 Key components of research methodology:According to Saunders et al. (2013), selection of appropriate research methodology requiresconsideration for different aspects such as philosophy, approach, strategy, choice, timehorizon, and data collection procedure. The given below is the summary of researchcomponents selected in this dissertation. 3.2.1 Research Philosophy:This term research philosophy is defined as key idea adopted in research to identify the wayto collect, interpret, analyse and presentation of data on any specific phenomenon. Thereare different types of research philosophies such as positivism, objectivism, subjectivism, humanist, pragmatism, realism, radical humanist, and structuralism. This research thesisrequires collection of research data from real world, therefore positivism researchphilosophy was selected to analyse the relationship between supply chain management andperformance of firms in textile industry of Pakistan (Grey, 2013). The positivist research philosophy is commonly adopted within social business studies. Ithelps in collecting the recognisable proof from social world based on instinct, sensation, andsubjective reflection. (Easterby-Smith et al., 2008). This philosophy was adopted forgathering certifiable information in virtual condition. It also helps in selecting the diversestatistical tools and utilising quantifiable information for research. It also helps inconsidering previous research models, theories, and case studies about the similar researchphenomenon. (Saunders et al. 2013). 3.2.2 Research Approach:The term research approach is linked with outcome of research approach, whereas itprovides ways for researcher to select single or multiple outcome of research. There are twotypes of research approach such as deductive and inductive approach. The inductiveresearch approach is selected to elaborate one single research phenomenon into differenttheories and models. The deductive research approach is selected to summarise differentmodels and theories into one single outcome of research. (Maxwell, 2012). This dissertation is adopting the deductive research approach by identifying relationshipbetween supply chain management and performance of firms in textile industry of Pakistan. In order to select the deductive research approach, there are different aspects considered in

this dissertation such as deduction of hypothesis, modifying theory, operational term, andoutcome inquiry as shown in figure 3.2.Figure 3.2: Components of deductive research approach (Maxwell, 2012) The deduction of hypothesis is key component of deductive research approach, whereas ithelps in supporting the key research questions. The answer to research questions is onlypossible by accepting or rejecting the research hypothesis defined in this thesis as explainedbelow: (Noor, 2008)Ho: There is no relationship between supply chain management and performance offirms in textile industry of PakistanHi: There is positive relationship between supply chain management andperformance of firms in textile industry of Pakistan
