INTRODUCTION Managing operations is one of the most important tasks in the organization as withproper management of operations, the organization can effectively achieve the goals andobjectives. Besides this, the organization in this case is required to adopt the strategic and tacticapproach which can help in developing competitive advantage. This report will focus on theM&S organization which is a British multinational retailer and it is headquartered inWestminster. The organization was established in the year 1884 and now it has expanded itsoperations in several other countries. The report will focus on the roles and characteristics ofthe leader and difference in their working. Further, different leadership theories will be appliedin M&S for effective functioning of the organization. On the other hand, the stress will be laidon factors which impact the business environment and further solutions will be suggested toresolve the issue. Last but not least, the report will also emphasize on the importance and valueof the operation's management which can help in attaining in the business goals. TASK 1 P1 Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and manager for M&SThe managers as well as leader both are important for the organization and especiallyfor the retail store. The role of the leader is to guide the employees as well as the role of themanager is to manage the work which is performed in the organization. M&S is one of theleading retail chains so it has several operations which are widespread; in this case it becomesnecessary for the lead to lead their team (Krajewski and et.al., 2013). Leadership andmanagement have different roles as well as characteristics but in case of leader it has theresponsibility of all the employees who are under them. The leaders are the individual whoinfluence the employees to achieve the goals and the targets. On the other hand, the managersare the one who manages the working of whole of M&S.BASISLEADERMANAGERDefinition They are the one who providedirection to the individual andthey guide in carrying out thetask in M&S. It is responsibleonly for the team,On the other hand, in case ofmanager his work is to controlas well as direct the wholeorganization. He is the one whoallocates the work to the

manager in M&S. Focus The focus on the leader is onattaining the goals andobjectives. They focus only ontheir team members whichthey are leading as well asguiding (Jing and Avery,2011) The focus of the manager inM&S is on developing thecoordination between theindividuals so that the task canbe accomplished in anappropriate manner. Decision making process In the decision makingprocess, the leader aresometimes included in thedecision. But in case ofdemocratic leader if anydecision is made for theirteam, then he includes all theteam members in the decisionmaking process. The mangers are included inevery decision of M&S. Thereason is that they are the onewho know the actual position ofthe organization and even thesituation in which the firm iscarrying out its operations. Power The power is given to theleader of M&S by theirfollowers. If he has goodfollowers then the power is inthe leader hand. Power is in the hands ofmanagers by default becausethe position only has givenpower to him to coordinate andmanage the activity of M&S(Mülle and Turner, 2010).PersonalityThe personality of the leaderis charismatic and he has thepower to influence thebehaviour of the employees.Managers are the one who arecalm in nature and their focus ison maintaining andcoordinating the activity of the
