Assessment Task, Instructions for students
In your own time, prepare responses to the short answer questions. The questions relate to various
aspects of communication and working in the community and health sector. Students must research, refer
to elearn resources and reference materials while answering the questions.
Time Allowed
Students are to work on this assessment in their own time and submit the assessment on elearn by the due
date.
Assessment Range and Conditions
Professional, legal and ethical communication is an essential part of effective work in the community
services and health. All answers must demonstrate knowledge of the Sector, usual service types and
professional communication and collaboration. Students may refer to relevant workplace policies and
procedures.

The assessment questions and answer template is provided on elearn.

Criteria
To complete this assessment satisfactorily you must:
Answer all the questions providing relevant and succinct information for each question.
Organise your written communication so it is clear and easy to follow.
Reference appropriately
Students will receive a satisfactory (S) or not yet satisfactory (NYS) result and written feedback. If you
receive an NYS results read your feedback carefully and make an appointment to talk with your teacher if
needed.
1. In the community sector we use person first language. Using your own words describe
what we mean by person first language.

Person First Language means the person with disability is known with dignity,
individuality and equality rather than known by their disability.
2. a) Using person first language, rewrite this bad example: Joan is completely non verbal.
John can able to understand Sign Language.
b) Using person first language, rewrite this bad example: It is 7.30pm. It is time you put
Joan to bed.
Sleeping at 7.30 pm is good for the Health of John.

You don’t need to worry about the medical tests. I’m sure everything will be fine.”
What is the impact of this statement?
The impact of this statement is that a person feels patiently and calmly during medical test.

4. A client speaks very softly and slowly, repeating phrases many times. How will you
communicate effectively with this person?
Speak with patiently and calmly so that Client could understand the conversation
and ask for feedback whether they get understood or not.
5. a) What is meant by duty of care?
b) Duty of Care is a legal duty of a person to work with proper care without harming other
people.
c) Give an example of how you would apply duty of care while working with a client
who has low vision.
If working with Client who is having low vision, it is important to gather the information
related to how client uses his vision in daily activities. After collecting information a
precaution must be taken for client so that they may not face any problem.
6. A client needs to make life changing decisions about where they will live.
As a support worker or carer what will you do to support their decision making?

assist them?
