LITERATURE REVIEW
Defining CSR
What does CSR in particular mean? CSR stands for corporate social responsibilities. There are
many definitions relating to CSR. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in its advanced

formulations has been a significant and advancing theme since the 1950s - the beginning of the
CSR. Certainly, confirmations of organisations trying to improve society, the local area, or
specific partner gatherings might be followed back many years (Carroll et al. 2012).
“Corporate Social Responsibility is dictated by numerous names like corporate sustainability,
social responsibility (SR), instance of tourism, and corporate citizenship (CS). According to the
examination corporate sustainability is inspected as a business strategy, which investigates the
higher estimation ofpartner through overseeing danger and grasping the odds starting from
social, ecological and financial turn of events (Kang et al. 2010). From corporate sustainability,
the perspective of the shareholder is achieved by pioneers through equipping the leaders and
techniques to join the full power of the market for
sustainability services and products while effectively refraining from sustainability
hazard and cost at a similar time (Holcomb et al., 2007).
The cutting edge period of CSR or social responsibility as it was
frequently called is most suitably set apart by the prints by Howard R. Bowen of
his milestone book Social Responsibilities of the Businessman in 1953. Bowens
work continued from the conviction that few hundred biggest organisations in the
United States were crucial focuses of force and dynamic and that the activities of
these organisations contacted the lives of residents from multiple points of view.
The key inquiry that Bowen posed that keeps on being asked today was
“What obligations to society may businesses responsibly be expected to
assume? (Bowen 1953, p. xi). Browen (1953) put forward an underlying
meaning of the social responsibilities of the businessmen: "It refers to the
obligations of businessmen to pursue those lines of action which are desirable in
terms of the objectives and values of our society" (p. 6). Bowen cited Fortune
magazine examination (1946, as cited in Bowen, 1953, p.44) wherein the
magazines editors felt that CSR, or the social consequences of business leaders
were liable for the consequences of their activities on a circle fairly more
extensive that covered by their profit-and loss proclamations (cited in Bowen,
1953, p. 44). It is fascinating to take note that 93.5% of the businessmen
reacting concurred with this assertion.
William C. Fredrick was additionally a powerful supporter of the early

definitions of social responsibility as he composed,
[Social responsibilities] mean that businessmen should oversee the opera- tion of
an economic system that fulfils the expectations of the public. And this means in turn that
the economy's means of production should be employed in such a way that production and
distribution should enhance total socio-
economic welfare.
Social responsibility in the final analysis implies a public posture toward
society’s economic and human resources and a willingness to see that those resources
are used for broad social ends and not simply for the narrowly circumscribed interests of
private persons and firms. (Frederick, 1960, p. 60).
