INTRODUCTION Self-awareness is the ability for reflection and the capacity to understand oneself in order to separate from the environment and individuals. Continuous self-development is a step to improve yourself in order to attain all the defined objectives. However, the self-awareness is a key corner to emotional intelligence. Report’s main aim is to develop the understanding of self- awareness and continuous self-development to grow an individual physically as well as mentally. Report presents how self-awareness and continuous self-development will help to fulfil role of a successful leader or a manager in the future. Further, it also reflects critical incidents in order to find the implications by using two model or toolkit. Report also summarises the major strength and weaknesses which have emerged in self-analysis by identifying three areas of personal development which help to overcome from this in next year. 1. Presenting how self-awareness and continuous self- development help leader or manager According toAshford and Tsui (2018)to become a successful leader or a manager, it is quite necessary to know yourself i.e. known as self- awareness. For a company a successful manager or leader plays an effective role more than generating profit but they have an ability to carry out the work and lead a team with great level of management regarding their previous experience. Moreover, self-awareness also defines as the capability of a person in order to assess their own behaviour or skills in the working area. Even it is also important for the growth as well as personal development because in this competitive culture, many people operate in the belief which is realized tough for them and as a result, the effectiveness of a leader diminishes. Being a leader, if I am honest with myself then it will be more beneficial to realize weaknesses but on the other side, there are some people who tries to hide weaknesses and at that time it lacks integrity and self-awareness (Self-awareness,2018). Apart from this, on an interpersonal level, self- awareness help to determine the strength and weaknesses which further help to raise the credibility and as a result, it will increase the effectiveness of a leadership. Self-awareness also help a leader at organizational level, such that manager or leader of a firm will take better decisions through constantly learning and springboards to innovation and agility and as a result, the performance of employees are automatically raises. As per the view of Atwater and Yammarino, (2014)who stated that self- awareness is the first step to become an effective leader. Further, leaders should also have the ability to control their employee's mind 1
and emotions which further help them to guide and to develop their own knowledge. Learning to be aware is not an easy task for a leader but mastering in this skill also help to become more effective leader. Hence, it has been analysed that in this global environment and to be more effective in their own working area, it is crucial for the leader to have a strong emotional self- awareness but this allow leader or manager to determine the gaps in their management skills and uncover areas. Therefore, this understanding further assist them to make the best decision and make them more effective in order to motivate their employees so that they provide the best outcomes. AsBourner, (2015)stated that leaders should also know about their own strength and weaknesses, maintain self- discipline which is a part of self- awareness and it has been analysed that the person who are successful in their business have a strong connection to their intuitions and also trust to their subordinates in order to take better decisions. Even the legitimacy of a leader also part in their own ability and If they did not reflect themselves then it will be affect their behaviour or lack of true awareness of their own presentation to others. Hence, it is clear thatwithoutself-awareness,theleadercannotraisetheproductivityandimprovethe performance of a company. In addition to this, to lead an entire team it is quite necessary for a leader to be self- aware and listen without justifying that helps them to take better decision for the welfare of a team as well as a firm. As a result, self- awareness is the process that involves an interaction between though as well as emotions and for become a successful manager or leader, a person has to determine their strength and weaknesses and also take some corrective measures in order to cope up with it. This shows that the person have an ability in order to identify their future state and also set some goals for their future. As per the view ofClive Fletcher, Caroline Bailey, (2015)Self- development means more capacity and possibilities which help to become more effective leader. It also refers to the commitment of a person in order to think or decide for their own. This step also involves acquiring some more new skills and repetition of actions in order to improve habits and personal skills. To become more effective leader in future, I believed that self- awareness and self- development are the two basic things which help a person for the success of a leader. In our fir activity, I realized that only British people spoke though our group had people from different states such as India, China and Malaysia, etc. This shows that there is a gap between our groups and as a result, this gap force me that I should not share my views or ideas at my turn. I also realized that people from different states are not mixed well and did not open themselves that is what I did not accept and this is a big issue for me. Because I am completely different person from then such that I like to talk with others and am good in one to one meet or have many small groups for chatting. Next day of our activity shows that the level of comfort within my group and I get almost same feedback from others such that when I start open myself in front of others then I 3
did not kept quiet hence, the gap is actually bridged. At the time of presentation, our group present in more confident manner and this was a great learning for me because I always get away from such kind of situation and to overcome this, I should be more extroversion in my future groups so that I can easily build up the confidence among my colleagues. During the time of our first day performance, we all did not know each other and that is what we all lack the collaboration between each other but when I used Belbin Team roles, which assist me to develop better understanding with each other and further this will help me to present our point of view in better way in front of others. I always keep myself enrolled in the studies but even after spending many days I could not make a single friend. After that I used to be quieter and I was afraid of not accepted by other people. Then I come to realize that it is the problem of communication gap which should be overcome because in my school, people belongs to different culture and at that I had to take a step in order to present myself in front of others. As I had enough knowledge and have many great ideas and I also wished to share it with others and it cannot be possible because of high communication gap. That is why I decided to solve the problem and further I realized that because of change in culture and cultural intelligence. Therefore, I started work over it and I am quite confident to get myself recognized. For this reason, I have to be more active and even faces many adverse situation too. I also analysed that I would have to accept others then only others would also accept me. For this reason I used cultural intelligence toolkit in order to solve the situation and overcome the problem of communication. Further I also realized that in my school all students only speak in French and on the other side, I can communicate my words only in English. But as I am ready to learn new things and that is what now I am doing. As to bridge the gap, I used cultural intelligence in order to make good collaboration. Further this tool also assist me in order to assess their level of cultural intelligence. Summarises the major strength and weaknesses and areas of personal development Strength and weaknesses:During 1stsituation, I found that my strength is my behaviour which help to interact with others in order to make our presentation the best as compared to others but on the same time I feel that the problem in this situation was because of team spirit and the fear of not accepted each other. In 2ndsituation, I feel that I am always ready to learn new thing from even adverse situation that can be consider as a strength. But on the other side, the weakest point which I face during the situation is such that I was not accepted the different cultures and make myself to acknowledge for the same. 6
Three area of personal development:In those critical situations, the first area of improvement is team spirit which should be develop because this skill will help me in my future to lead as a leader and run the company in effective way. Second area of development is motivation such that I should be self- motivated as this way will help me to keep encourage my team members. Third area is communication skills which needs to be improved as per the time. Toolkit:Four toolkits are as follows: Belbin:this model help me to develop an effective team role because an effective team will help to achieve the goals in well-defined manner. Therefore, this model is helpful to build trust and mutual understanding among the team members. Emotional intelligence:It is a way which help to interact with the world or determine individual behaviour and also aware which includes some skills such as impulse control and motivation that help to take better decision for the future and welfare of the company. Cultural Intelligence:this model help to determine the understanding of cultures and it is also linked closely to emotional intelligence and also emphasis the strategic dimension and help me to develop relationship with all different peoples who belongs to different cultures (Earley & Mosakowski, 2014). Management Competencies:This skill help me to develop skills which are related to management and hence, this further assist me to manage the entire work with greater efficiency and great enthusiasm. CONCLUSION By summing up above, it has been concluded that self- awareness and self-development are two critical factors that helps a person to become an effective and better manager or leader in their future. As report concluded that due to self- awareness only an individual come to know about their own strength and weaknesses and because of self- development, person can improve their weaknesses in order to get success in their life. Further, report describe two critical cases from which it has been concluded that using Belbin and Cultural intelligence as a model into the situation, I can overcome my problem in better way. As Belbin model help me to make better team roles and in this way the member are work as a team, while on the other side, Cultural Intelligence model help to not provide knowledge only to culture but it help to make better 7
