INTRODUCTION
Management skills can be defined as or refers to specific attributes or capabilities data executive
for an individual holding higher position in an organisation should possess for fulfilling
particular task of the company in an appropriate manner by attaining all objectives. Jeans girls
can be developed by individual by learning and practically applying the skills in the real
scenarios or situations occurring in the company in most effective manner. The skills help the
individual or manager to relate with their co-workers and understand their behaviours which will
help them to pick appropriate ways to deal with their subordinates. This report focuses on
management skills and personal development. It is divided into two parts, first activity is
reflective essay and discussion on me in relation to different leadership and management skills I
hold (Marutha, 2019). A Personal Development Plan (PDP) is also developed. The second part
of the report explains the theories and application of transferable skills in an organisational
context. Tesco is considered in this assignment which is a British multinational grocery store and
general merchandise retailer. The Company was established in 1919, by Jack Cohen and
headquartered in England, UK. Tesco serves numerous customers on a daily basis as it is
operated worldwide and holds huge operational units. The company has a very big employee
base involving different managerial levels which implies leadership and management skills
please very important role in the organisation to work effectively.
ACTIVITY 1
Reflection on management and leadership skills using range of models and theories
The management and leadership skills are essential abilities in modern business world.
Management and leadership are not similar concepts but go hand in hand. The role of
Management refers and of making plans, organising resources, directing individual’s sexy video
and controlling the activities taking place in the organisation. On the other hand leadership is a
technique and power and individual hold to motivate and inspire people in organisation and
moving them towards the right direction. Managers and top level management regulations and
governs the organisation along with leaders inspires the individuals and their followers focusing
on their needs accordingly motivating them creating a vision towards the right path. The
management and leadership skills which I hold and perform in my organisation are efficient. For
instance a situation of conflict between two operational teams holding different roles and

responsibilities and different objectives arises. Border teams very efficient and effective why
working towards their goals. But the tasks of both the teams are interlinked with each other. The
teams are under my supervision and governance, it is my responsibility to resolve the conflicts
and develop mutual understanding between the members of both the teams and they are my
subordinates. As and leader and manager of both the teams I holds the responsibility of a team
member and their effectiveness in their tasks and duties. Order to resolve the conflicts between
both team I conducted a collaborative meeting team members of the teams were present. The
meetings held under my supervision I was present there conducted supportive communication
actors listening to the view points of every individual for understanding the situation in an
effective manner. The meeting did not end well as there were more misconduct and
misunderstanding created in both the team members. The team members wouldn't be able to to
develop mutual understanding but got aggressive. As a leader I love effective communication
skills and leadership skills because I was unable to calm my subordinates down and provide
them effective solution for their problems (Breen and et. al., 2020). The leadership and
management skills which I hold our traditional and old and this is the area where I lacked. Need
to develop more effective communication skills and leadership skills as the business scenario and
conditions are changing. Belonging from different backgrounds and experiences are involved
and their understanding differ from one another. The subordinates expected better
communication and solutions of the problems but I like the leadership qualities and were unable
to understand their behaviours. In order to be more efficient and productive I need to improve
my skills and knowledge of modern leadership and Management concepts. For doing so a
personal development plan is developed in the next section which will path my way towards
growth and better opportunities in my career.

Personal Development Plan:
A PDP is a document which is structured and support the process which an individual and takes
to reflect upon their own learnings performances and achievements for their personal education
growth and career development. Performance development plan are used by employees and
individuals for planning higher opportunities and career development for attaining growth in the
professional lives. This is basically a roadmap or a framework developed by an individual for
himself or herself for attaining specific goals in prescribed time and by appropriate methods.

ACTIVITY 2
Transferable skills are those capabilities and talents one possesses which is useful to employees
across different job roles and in varied industries (Peró-Cebollero and et. al., 2020). Transferable
skills as suggested by its name are those capabilities which can be transferable from one
individual to another and for which every employee looks or seek for in the person. Transferable
skills are very effective tool to position you in front of a new employer while applying for a new
job specially into a different industry. There are various transferable skills which can be applied
by the managers while working in the organisation. These transferable skills are elaborated
below in context of Tesco in the next sections.
Supportive communication
Communication is a tool or a process of exchanging data, messages and oceans from one person
to another. Communication is the part of everyday life of every single individual in the world, is
considered as a practice which is undertaken by human beings on regular basis. it is the part of
human life cycle and nothing can be done without communicating with each other. Supportive
communication is defined as verbal and nonverbal behaviour produced with the intention of
providing assistance and guidance to others when needed.
Supportive communication is an interpersonal interaction takes place between managers and
subordinates; it increases the manager to effectively communicate with the staff and address the
challenging situation faced by them. There are 8 different attributes of supportive
communication which are as follows:

 Problem oriented, not Person oriented
 Validating, not Invalidating
 Specific, not Global
 Conjunctive, not Disjunctive
 Owned, not Disowned

Advantage: Organisational context supportive communication is practiced by managers for
guiding and directing the staff and addressing the subordinates (Hill and et. al., 2019). Every
manager an organisation always encourage to use of supportive communication practices which
supports the company to drive higher productivity, rapid problem solving, less conflicts amongst
employees and management and also enhance the relationships individuals holds in a team
(Hafford-Letchfield, 2020).
Organisational Context: Tesco is one of the largest retailers of its kind in the UK and around
the world the managers and top level management staff always encourage their employees for
summative communication. The managers of Tesco always take steps and put efforts in
developing effective relationships with the staff with the help of supportive communication skills
and practice. The management of Tesco focuses on the problem listen to the staff and their issues
along being specifically addressing the problems and searching for solutions.
Motivation
Motivation is a crucial and very important for development and growth of an organisation.
Motivation is defined as the element which exist in an individual or person which has the
potential influence the work actions and individual takes performing their job roles and duties on
behalf of the organisation. The performance level of employees and work force depend upon
there motivation level and their willingness to work (Wang, Crawford and Liu, 2020). Indirectly
motivation or encouragement to work effectively and potentially in an organisation of an
employee is directly connected to the productivity of individuals.
Advantage: A motivated employee or a team or a workforce of company can bring huge
changes in the profitability and productivity of organisation. There are seven different
motivational theories and techniques which can be used by management to encourage their staff
and increase their enthusiasm. This motivational theories are divided into two parts content and

process theories which also holds different tools under them. Content theories mostly focuses on
the factors that motivate people to seek an approach the desires and satisfy their personal needs.
Maslow need hierarchy theory is the most common and potentially used motivational technique
out of all content theories. On the other hand process theories of motivation who is the
psychological and behavioural processes which motivate a person or in individual to work in a
particular manner. In Other words process theory concentrates on the behaviours of individual
which is being affected by their needs and desires.
Organisational Context: Tesco is a retail organisation which has varied type of people working
in it having different needs and desires. The force of Tesco holes different factors which
motivates them according to their needs and wishes. The management of Tesco most commonly
used Maslow’s need hierarchy technique of content theory for motivating their subordinates.
This theory has five stages which moves hierarchically that is first comes the psychological
needs once they are fulfilled safety needs arises and when City games working in an organisation
fulfills social needs arises which highlights willingness of individual to be socially accepted and
the belongingness in the company. Once these three needs fulfils self esteem and self
actualization needs arises which highlights the selfish designers of individual of being at the
higher position and attaining higher boost in there career. These are the 5 stages of Maslow’s
need hierarchy theory which are used as the motivational factors by the management of Tesco to
encourage the staff and providing them job satisfaction. The higher level of motivation of
individual of workforce increase the productivity as employee now work with their full potential
and abilities to accomplish their desires.
Empowerment
Empowerment is a process through which involves the development of individuals which
influence them expand their abilities and efficiencies of team to help the organisation in
performing with improved levels and continuous improvement. Other words empowerment is a
strategy which helps the organisation to develop and improve their productivity level. It is one of
the most effective and most commonly used tool organisations for increasing the productivity
and enhancing their operational standards. Empowering employees basically means facilitating
them with authority and decision making power which bring out more and more abilities and
skills of the employees.

Advantage: Empowering the employees increases their motivation and potential as they increase
the confidence level in themselves and in their personal strengths. Environment is continuously
changing and in such rapidly changing distance it is important for organisation and management
to go beyond traditional directive management concepts encourage employees and their fresh
ideas to travel into to the company. The creative an innovative ideas suggested by employees can
help the company to increase and enhance their productivity of both the individual and the
company as well (Schlichter and Buchynska, 2019).
Organisational Context: Practicing empowerment can help and benefit Tesco invaded manners
from which most efficient is increased productivity of employees and teams, higher level of
motivation and morals of workforce, better innovative ideas traveling into the company with
improved creativity, video improve dream work and improved performances which results in
higher quality e of products and services rendered. Tesco management can use empowerment
skill to keep the staff productive and increasing their performances by rendering them authority
and including them in decision making. also management has to undertake supervision steps and
techniques to seek that no individual is misusing their powers and lacking in fulfilling their
responsibilities. The collaboration of Management and employees together can bring best results
to Tesco in present and in future.
Conflict Management
Conflict management is another essential and necessary transferable skill which is important to
be held by a manager of an organisation. Conflict is nothing but two different perspectives of
two different individuals. Every organisation has employees from separate regions to follow
different cultures and holds the different experiences belonging to separate backgrounds. It is
very common that conflicts arise between two individuals who are not compatible with one
another and whose goals are different from each other. Conflict management is a skill which can
individual or manager has to integrate the efforts of employees and resolve there
incompatibilities which arises amongst them while working together (Almahry and et. al., 2020).
Advantage: In an organisation conflict management is an important tool as conflicts amongst
workforce and employees or different teams associated in organisation is very dangerous. It is
important that the manager and management level staff reduces the conflicts taking place
between employees. Conflicts are beneficial for the organisation to as it increases the analytical
thinking and creative level of individuals and managers developing more perspectives of

Management understand their staff and their problems. But if these conflicts increase amongst
the staff it hinders the objectives and goals of organisation.
Organisational Context: Tesco understands the importance of conflict management and
necessity of developing and integrating the efforts of separate teams. Therefore management of
Tesco seek different it managers and ways to help employees and different teams to develop
mutual understanding and effective relationships with one another. For instance Tesco managers
conduct regular staff meetings and collaborative discussions which helps the personnel’s to
communicate with one another and understand each others perspective helping in developing
effective relationships in them.
Team Effectiveness
A team is a group of individuals or employees brought together holding separate capabilities for
achieving a common objective (Bridgstock, 2019). A team always has a similar objective and
turns to be an effective team when all different individual present are working for the same
objectives and fulfil their responsibilities in respective time. The characteristic of an effective
team is the individuals have clarity of the tasks, make use of effective communication tools and
channels interact with one another and share their viewpoints, decisions which are made in the
team are the collaborative results of discussion among all the team members and goal of team is
common every team member works for the objective of the team rather than their personal aims.
Advantage: Effective team place a very important role in enhancing the performance of
organisation and the managers are responsible for developing a team into an effective team.
Tesco is a multinational organisation which has several of operations flying that they have
different teams for each operation these teams are developed on permanent and temporary basis.
The management of Tesco can make use of different philosophies and theories available and
established by marketers for effective team development (Ravindran and et. al., 2020).
Organisational Context: Team development theory is suggested to Tesco which has 5 stages
that enables the managers to develop an effective team and make them work with their full
efficiency. The first stage of bringing people together where they are new to each other 2nd stage
is of making uncomfortable third stage where managers to provide them clarity of the task and
what is exactly expected out of them. The Fourth stage is the performing stage where individuals
perform their responsibilities and duties assigned and managers will supervise done and motivate
them to work with their full potential. the last stages of adjoining temporary teams are dissolved

as the motive is fulfilled here managers will reward and appreciate the performances of different
members as18 them towards better opportunities.
CONCLUSION
The above report for assignment concludes that management and leadership skills are the most
important abilities which an individual working in organisation holds. Leadership and
management are two different concepts but are used as synonyms. Management or the manager
who has the ability to become a leader as well as a leader has the ability to reach to the
management level and govern the whole organisation. The reflective essay is based on leadership
and management skills of me and PDP plan is also developed for improving my personal
performance. Moreover different transferable skills are evaluated supportive communication,
motivation, empowerment etc. and applied in organisational context for gaining knowledge for
seeking their importance.
