CE 3.4 Distinctive Activity
CE 3.4.1 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
I have utilized my civil engineering skills and knowledge for the project of Doha Festival
City. I have applied these skills and knowledge for the betterment of the project and the client of
the project. My power and skill of critical thinking and the ability for analysis were the most
important any project. The conference that helped me was the ZAK World of Facade Conference
that took place on 27th October, 2015 in Marriot Marquis Hotel, Doha, Qatar. By utilizing the
knowledge I have gained from the regular site trainings and workshops on the installation of the
facades on site I was able to perform my task with utmost sincerity and smoothly. I had followed
the Qatar Construction Standards like QCS 2014, ASTM, BS-EN standards for this particular
project. I researched the glass strengths and properties including various inter layers on the Web.
I also arranged 3rd party inspections for glass tests on site and all water testing. After working
closely with the PM, I had finalized many design and site issues where I gained experience on

lifting plans and reporting. I have applied Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office and Autocad in
this project.
CE 3.4.2 Accomplishment and task performed
The project was finished with relevant ideas and plans. The daily meetings, progress
meetings, site walks that helped all the members of the project for understanding this project and
complete the project with utmost perfection. Moreover, before every new task a training period
was organized to ensure that the method statement was followed. My attitude towards my work
and the sub ordinates was always approachable. The various disciplinary actions were carried out
whenever they were required in the project. Weekly progress meeting with the quality control
manager of the client and daily discussions with the PM also helped to achieve the project
objectives and goals.
CE 3.4.3 Identified issues and their solutions
3.4.3.1 Issues
There were mainly three specific issues in the project of Doha Festival City that were
required to be resolved on an immediate basis. The issues are as follows:
i) The specification called for glass balustrade to 1.5kn, the client during the design stage
decided that he required it to comply with the BS, which was 3kn.
ii) Kalzip Pop Up roofs in IFC drawings showed the pitch at 2 Degrees this was below
the Kalzip recommendations. The client was unwilling to alter his concept so I arranged a
meeting with the Kalzip Germany design office to discuss solutions. It was decided to maintain
the design intent we work remove the ridge flashing and self curve the roofs in one sheet.

iii) The steel erector failed to install as per the approved drawings and spacing’s. QTA
when we received the handover of the steel flagged up all the issues. Unfortunately, due to the
late handover and the imminent opening of the mall there was not sufficient time for them to
correct them.
3.4.3.2 Solutions
I provided relevant solutions for the issues and problems and they were solved
immediately. The solutions to the problems are as follows:
i) For the first problem, I researched glass options and decided that changing the PVB
interlayer to SentryGlas would mean we could still use the same thickness glass. Also the base
bracket would need to be increased to 12mm thick to comply with the B.S standard. However,
this would mean the bracket would be too heavy to manually install. I advised the PM that it
would be a quicker install if we changed the design from steel to aluminium. This actually saved
over 30% on manufacturing and 35% on installation, as we could install 6m lengths instead of
2m.
ii) For the second problem, I had to incorporate top hats to the purlins at various sizes.
The end result was quicker and easier to install but maintained the design concept.
iii) For the third issue, I sat with the Contractor and the client and consultant to push
through the changes to allow the canopies to proceed. This saved over 6 weeks of steel remedial
works and also it allowed QTA to proceed with only the minimal of delays.
