1. Background/Overview
Sociological factors play an important role in shaping a client, especially in
youth care. These factors can impact on the decision as to whether one is fit
for society or not. As a worker, you must understand and identify how these
factors can shape the client as an individual, and as part of community and
family groups.
Scenario: Patrick is a Sudanese refugee who recently came into your care.
Patrick finds it hard to make friends due to cultural differences and appears
lonely. He discloses to you that as a Sudanese person, he often receives
racist name callings from other clients, which is the reason why he does not
like to stay in residential care and absconds often.
However, he still shows pride in being Sudanese by putting up the
Sudanese flag in his room. Patrick has a hard time at school as he cannot
read or write and instead plays basketball as he refuses to work. As he
seems to enjoy basketball, staff enrol Patrick into basketball lessons.
Patrick also has a history of drug abuse but refuses to go to health check-
ups and is seen to be disengaged to government organisations.

3. Questions/Task
Part A: You are in the residential care home and need to create a group activity with the clients which promotes
cultural safety for Sudanese people. Answer the following questions.
1. Design a group activity for Patrick based on this case study and identify what this group activity aims to
achieve. (100-200 words)
Being Patrick is a foreign student under my care, who have developed unrelated behaviours which makes him
unfit to socializes with people, therefore the group of the individuals which I formed actually will focus on some
of the important activities which will make him happy . This will also entails me considering his ability like
basketball which is his favorite to play at part time. Therefore, the aim group will find some of the criteria which
help them know the background of the Patrick. Through knowing his background will help us discern some of
the basic necessities which Patrick lack or opt to have been given but he was not given. However, the group will
also aim to discourse with Patrick about disadvantages of the indulging in the drug abuse which he was a victim
of, thus this will help him as well as the group whose main objective is to bring Patrick back to the social way of
life. Secondly, since Patrick tendency of not going to class has made him choose a different direction of the
sturdy, that is involved in the handball rather than concentrating in the class activities, this will give us the
opportunity to address some of the important results of the education to the youths which will help him in the
future as immigrants (Meuleman, 2009).
2. Patrick’s social and cultural background has created barriers for him to integrate into society. Using the table
below, identify at least three social and cultural factors that might create possible barriers for him, his family
and the community, in at least three different situations.
Situation 1:

From the case study
identify a social/cultural
factor creating barriers.
(20 - 50 words)
One of the social factors which affect Patrick is the language. As
explained above in the case study, it is evident that the reason which
makes Patrick be indoors is due to the language barrier thus is unable
to speak with his colleagues effectively. Thus this is a barrier to him
with his colleagues.
Type of impact (20 - 50
words)
In the case of the Patrick, lack of the proper means of the
communicating made it difficult for him as well as me since he
was under my care. The state makes him feel outdated thus deter
him to express himself over his need or desire.
Individual impact (20 -
50 words)
Individually, Patrick suffered from psychological stress disorders.
This is due to the facts that he was not in a position to actually
socializes with his colleagues properly due to lack of the common
language apart from his mother tongue and colour of his skin
Family impact (20 - 50
words)
Since he was under my care, both of us distressed, that him and
me. We lack common or proper means of the communication thus
we only maintain verbal means of the communication to each other
which was very difficult within the cube. Thus this will makes it
difficult for his family to know his problem if I approached them
with the problems which Patricks was facing.
Community impact (20 -
50 words)
Proper means of the communication literally isolates Patrick with
his colleagues within the community. This also hinders him even
