1. Background/Overview
Sociological factors play a huge role in shaping a client,
especially in youth care. These factors can impact on the
decision as to whether one is fit for society or not. As a
worker you must understand and identify how these factors
can shape the client as an individual, and as part of
community and family groups.
Scenario: Patrick is a Sudanese refugee who recently came
into your care. Patrick finds it hard to make friends due to
cultural differences and appears lonely. He discloses to you
that as a Sudanese person, he often receives racist name
callings from other clients, which is the reason why he does
not like to stay in residential care and absconds often.
However, he still shows pride in being Sudanese by putting
up the Sudanese flag in his room. Patrick has a hard time at
school as he cannot read or write, and instead plays
basketball as he refuses to work. As he seems to enjoy
basketball, staff enrol Patrick into basketball lessons. Patrick
also has a history of drug abuse but refuses to go to health
check-ups and is seen to be disengaged to government
organisations.

3. Questions/Task
Part A: You are in the residential care home and need to create a group activity with the
clients which promotes cultural safety for Sudanese people. Answer the following
questions.
1. Design a group activity for Patrick based on this case study and identify what this
group activity aims to achieve. (100-200 words)
Patrick is from a background that is not easily accepted in the society. He belongs to
the Sudanese culture, which is mostly like be called up names in the society. Thus, as
being a refugee Patrick is having a hard time in adjusting to the care unit. Thus to
make Patrick more comfortable, a group activity is said to be developed at the care
home for making the people more aware of the Sudanese culture and making Patrick
feel like home.
A group activity is said to develop at the care unit. As Patrick is more into basketball,
to encourage his passion, a basketball event is likely to be developed. Everyone
present at the care home along with the staff members would be participating at the
event. Thus, accordingly to the event plan, all the people would be knowing about
Patrick’s talent and also would be encouraging him to pursue a career in the field.
2. Patrick’s social and cultural background has created barriers for him to integrate into
society. Using the table below, identify at least three social and cultural factors that
might create possible barriers for him, his family and the community, in at least three
different situations.

social/cultural
factor creating
barriers.(20 - 50

The social factor that creates a barrier for Patrick is
the way he communicates with the other people. He
is unable to socialise with the other as he is a
refugee. Coming from Sudan he is treated as a racist
from the other clients.
Type of impact (20
- 50 words)
The impact on Patrick has affected him because of
the community which he belongs to. The negative
impact had created an environment which lacked the
community and safety needs.

(20 - 50 words)
The impact of an individual culture is derived from its
ancestors. The way he communicates is affected to
many clients because the other people do not crews
the culture of the people from other region or nation.
The distinctions are created between people like
that.
Situation 2:

social/cultural
factor creating
barriers. (20 - 50
words)
In the second situation Patrick finds it difficult to
adjust with his friends just because of the cultural
impact. The lack of communication and made it
difficult for him to connect and share with the fellow
mates.
Type of impact (20
- 50 words)

difference and he appears to be a lonely person. He
also receives a racist name. Due to these reasons he
would not like to stay in the residence.

he inherited the culture of this family and it reflected
while communicating with the other clients.

about Patrick because he did not make any effort of
socialising or tail to people around him.
