MAIN BODY
Ethical standard and knowledge of cultural influences in studying a young child
Before discussing about ways as how I approached to child for observing and knowing
about ways in which they behave, react and perform activities, I want to discuss importance of
ethics. Ethics that can be defined as moral values and principles, play a vital role as it makes us
able to understand what is wrong and what is right and this different pushes us towards right
conduct only. Studying a child is not an easy task and for studying 4 years child, Amelia, who
was my friend’s daughter, I took permission from her mother or my friend. As she was my friend
so she did not deny as she had trust on me. But for better outcomes and knowing about child
development and growth, I need to make sure that if she is allowing me with concerns of her
husband and family members so I asked her to meet at my home with her husband. After
meeting, I told her husband about myself and reason of observation to her daughter then they
agreed and fixed a date for observation Jagers, Rivas-Drake & Williams, (2019).
I observed Amelia, 4 years old child. She had curly hair, fair colour and innocent face. I
observed her ways of talking, behaving and ways of responding towards things. When I went at
my friend’s home then I was feeling that I was being observed by her husband that was obvious.
But it did not affect me too much because I had professional experience and had gone through
from this. So, I started my work of observation and saw that she touched my feet and greeted and

then I felt that culture and surroundings play a vital role in child growth and development. I tried
to perform my activities in an ethical manner by engaging child and not pressurizing her for
engaging in study. I observed her ways of reacting and when her parents were praising of her
elder brother in front of me then she was not feeling good as it was because of a feeling of
jealous. She was playing with her elder brother and physically as well as mentally she seemed
too strong.
Different observational methods used in this study
For knowing all about her development, growth and impacts of interesting topics, I made use of
different observational methods that include:
Reading record: I observed her way of reading books and then I noted that she read too slowly
by placing fingers on book.
Running record: It is all about related to present and at that time I observed her way of reacting
towards things and way of eating.
Learning story: I observe Amelia and asked her mother to tell her story and I found that she was
listening quietly and with full concentration. It helped me out in knowing that she has a better
observation and cognitive skill.
Jotting: I recorded important events such as: ways of reading and way of respecting parents and
others O’Reilly, Lewis & Elsabbagh,(2017).
Time sample: Under this type of observation, I observed her both positive and negative
behaviour I felt that she cannot perform 1 work more than 30-40 minutes as she keeps changing
types of games.
Anecdotal record: It includes factual events in which children are being observed by their facial
expression, reactions and body language. When she was playing and talking with her mother
then I Observed that she was nodding her head when she had to give answer.
Photographs: I took a photo of Amelia in order to observe and see differences as how she looks
in real life and in photo. By watching her photo I found that she as just as like she looks in real
life and with her face she was looking naught that she was.
Physical development: On the basis of observations and for differentiating I coded each
type of development with different colour. Green shows effectiveness and I give higher grade
to Amelia in this development because physically she was fit and active.
