1EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND ITS BARRIERS
The process of delivering a message successfully to a group of people can be considered
as effective communication. In other words, a communication is termed as ‘effective’ when the
messages intended to be transferred, can reach the receiver from the sender without any
interruption. The purpose of this study is to throw lights on the concept of effective
communication. In this context this study also focuses on the significance of effective
communication. Along with this, the obstacles or barriers related to the effective communication
are also highlighted in this study. Further, in this study I have attempted to conduct a self-
assessment and revelation of my own communication skills essential for eliminating the barriers
of communication:
The Chapter 1, “Understanding Communication” has helped me to form an idea about
effective communication. According to this chapter, a communication process is considered to be
effective when the interaction between two persons or among a group of results into the
meaningful transmission of messages from the sender to the receiver. All the parties involving in
the process of transmission of messages should be able to comprehend a common and easily
understandable interpretation of the message transmitted, so that the delivery of the message
becomes successful. In order to attain effective communication as well as interaction, parties
engaged in process of the transmission of messages need to listen to each other carefully. Hence
one of the prime factors, responsible behind the successful delivery of message through effective
communication is to listening to the statements of others involved in the same process of
communication. Again, a communication becomes significant, engaging and uninterrupted, if
each person involving in this communication process are valued, including the sender. More
specifically, the senders, along with the receivers should feel heard and understood, in case of
effective communication.

2EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND ITS BARRIERS
According to the Chapter 1, “Introduction to Interpersonal Communication”, effective
communication is the key to the meaningful interaction, maintenance of understanding as well as
cooperation in the workplace among the colleagues, among the peers or classmates in schools or
universities. Effective communication plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy work
culture as well as work environment. Again, effective communication assists leaders to discuss
their goals along with the mission and vision of the organization with their subordinates.
Effective communication can be utilized as an instrument to keep the employees of an
organization motivated as well as engaged with the business activities of the organization. Again,
workplace issues like bullying or humiliation of employees, forcing employees to bear the
burden of unethical pressure, can be resolved as well as eliminated, if the employees involve in
effective communication with the higher authority as well as the human resource managers.
Effective communication is also considered to be one of the easiest means that business
organizations adopt, for the purpose of strengthening their relationship with their customers,
collecting customer feedback, engaging them in the business activities as well. In the school and
universities, students can learn the art of cooperation and collaboration through group projects
and the success of group projects depends completely on effective communication. Children and
high school students learn to socialize and form bonding with friends, peers; if they are trained to
foster effective communication.
There are several obstacles or barriers of interpersonal communication, which I have
come to know after reading the chapter 4 “Interpersonal Communication and Diversity: Adapting
to others.” Effective communication. Firstly, there is language barrier. The differences in the
languages of people of diverse ethnic as well as cultural background often create hindrance in the

process of effective communication. Language barriers may induce misunderstanding as well as
miscommunication. Again, in different culture, there is different gesture, which is considered
non-verbal means of communication. As the meaning of this type of non-verbal gestures varies
from one culture to the other. Often this can be considered as one of the non-verbal language
barriers in the procedure of effective communication. Secondly, there are psychological barriers,
in case of which the psychological state of the sender or communicator may influence the
representation of the message to the receiver. For example, a simple message of being hungry
may be represented by a person, who is stresses, in a way, which may make the receiver feel that
he or she is treated rudely. In this case the rude attitude of a stressed person is not intentional; it
is the reflection of an excessively stressed mind.
As per the self-assessment that I conducted after reading the chapter 4 ‘Listening in
Interpersonal Communication’ , to know, my inherent communication skills it can be said that,
one of my communication skills is listening and observing others carefully before speaking. This
is one of the qualities that help me to understand the point of view of the other person with
whom I am engaged in the process of effective communication. This eliminates the chances of
misunderstanding. Again, as I am a good listener the person who involves with m, in the
procedure of effective communication can put their opinions in front of me very frankly. This
prevents a conversation to turn into a quarrelling. Again, as I observe the person who is
communicating with me minutely, I can understand the psychological state of that person at the
time of communication. This helps me to understand the connection between the style and tone
of talking and the psychological state of the person engaged in effective communication. Due to
this skill, the psychological barrier of effective communication can be evaded easily.
