Definition of Emotional intelligence and the importance of emotional
intelligence for mangers at workplace and difference between Intellectual and
physical ability
Emotional intelligence means the ability of the people to control and manage their
emotions and also have the ability to control the emotions of others and therefore influence their
behaviour. Emotional intelligence plays a very important role in leadership and it has five main
elements: self-regulation, self-awareness, empathy, motivation and social skills. Self-awareness
refers to the ability to completely understand oneself and this helps in understanding others and it
also helps in identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the people (Mathew & Gupta,
2015). Self-regulation refers to regulating oneself, such that person can impact others positively
and not negatively. Leaders are self-motivated people and therefore they work consistently
towards their goals and they value quality for work. Empathy refers to the ability of people to put
themselves in some other person’s shoes and then they take any decision. People with social
skills are the ones who have very good communication skills and therefore they can help in
resolving all conflicts and others (Petrides et al., 2016).
Managers are required to be emotionally intelligent in order to become effective and
successful. A manager who is emotionally intelligent can plan out all their activities in order to
get their work done without missing any deadlines (Li et al., 2016). Managers who are
emotionally intelligent can easily get the respect, positive attitude and trust of their staffs.
Managers who are emotionally intelligent are self-aware because it helps in understanding the
needs of one-self and also to have a better understanding of the reactions in case of certain events
which helps in evaluating the alternative solutions. It is necessary to start understanding one-self,
