Developing Employability Skills for Success in the Workplace

Introduction
Fundamental academic skills are the skills required as a base to more progress in one’s
professional career (Raju, 2017). These skills better prepare an individual for development at the
workplace. Fundamental skills consist of managing information, using numbers, solving
problems, and communication (Raju, 2017).
Communication is extremely important in today’s work world and also in one’s personal
life. When I am working I need to be able to go through and comprehend information presented
in different ways, such as words, charts, graphs, etc. Writing and speaking allows me to
communicate in an effective way with my co-workers. Being able to listen and ask questions is
very important so I understand the task at hand (Rudd et al., 2015).
I use many of these skills in my place of work frequently. For example, in a job like
mine, my boss may give me a task of moving stock from one aisle to another and then filling the
empty space with something brand new. I often use my communication skills to listen intently to
know exactly what I have to do. I make sure to ask questions so I know what kind of look and
organization my boss is looking for in the new display. Having good communication skills
allows me to work faster and do the job right the first time.
Personal Management Skills
My personal management, attitude, and behaviors are all skills that essential for one’s
personal growth. Personal management skills comprise: being liable, flexible, learning
incessantly, working safely, and signifying positive behaviors and attitudes (Powers, Jennings
and DeCarlo, 2014).

Reasonability and adaptability tend to go hand in hand when it comes to the workplace
(Biosafety and Quality Issues Must Go Hand In Hand, 2013). I must be able to establish
priorities and objectives when harmonizing personal life and work. I have to manage and plan
my time in order to attain my objectives no matter how big or small. I also have to be answerable
to my engagements and possibly the engagements of my team (Schmidt-Wilk, 2017). However,
being able to adapt while working with any of these responsibilities can be challenging but
rewarding if done right. Managing my time well can easily be ruined by something more
important occurring. I have to be able to adapt quickly to my situation and possibly carry out
multiple tasks at a time.
As a part time cleaner at Rochelle cleaning service Ltd and I have to have excellent
personal management skills to effectively do my job well. I often have to carry out multiple
duties while serving customers and trying to get my job done as well. I often use my skills on
busy days when I may have to clean two rooms, while then helping a customer and then possibly
answering the question of my seniors. It can be stressful at times but when done successfully it
makes the workplace run smoothly and efficiently.
Teamwork Skills
These skills are required for improvement in the productivity at the workplace (Jeschke,
Kaushal and Tockner, 2016). Being able to work with a team prepares me to enhance value in
the results of the project or task. Teamwork skills include working with others, and participating
in projects and tasks. Being able to work with others allows me to understand and operate
properly under the dynamics of my team. It makes sure that the workplace’s goals and purpose
are flawless. I always need to be be flexible and respectful to my team. I need to be helpful and
open of views, contribution, and thoughts of others within the team. Contribute to the team and

also offer and accept comment in a considerate and constructive way. Having teamwork skills is
a big part of my day to day at work. In my place of work it’s basically like working with a team
all the time. We often ask each other for opinions or help on our work. The employees will
frequently get together and talk about the ups and down of the workplace (Rhee, 2017). We will
try to come up solutions as a group to help our co-workers. Our bosses appreciate the
communication we have with each other as it takes some work off of them as well. All of these
employability skills are a way for professionals to stand out in today’s competitive work
environment. These skills will allow employees to know themselves and receive feedback well.
They should identify and reflect on their skills and implement a plan to develop and practice
their skills. A person with a strong set of fundamental, personal management, and teamwork
skills should have little trouble finding and being successful in their chosen career.
Communication skills
Having excellent oral communication skills are essential in today’s professional
environment (Wilkins, Bernstein and Bekki, 2015). Individuals who can communication and
speak well are far more likely to succeed and advance in their career. Many businesses rely on
their employees to have good communication skills to get their messages across. An employee
may have to put off a presentation about something new in the company or meet with important
clients. It is imperative that the employee demonstrate good knowledge of oral and written
communication. Businesses will often use presentations as a way to persuade or inform clients or
employees about new ventures (Koski and Launonen, 2012). In order to do this effectively the
business will put forth someone with great oral communication skills. This person should be well
prepared, have organized data, use good visual aids, and deliver in a concise and coherent
manner. All of these things will contribute to a well thought out and successful presentation.

However, there can be times when the employee is not successful. This is usually the result of
having poor oral communication skills. Not having these skills can lead to people becoming
confused if the person who is speaking is not clear on what they are trying to say. The person
listening the other may come out of the meeting with the completely opposite idea of what the
speaker was trying to convey. If the speaker has a lack of oral communication skills the listeners
may be put off by the inexperience. Especially if the speaker is visibly nervous or unsure of what
they are talking about. This can lead to clients not wanting to work with that employee or the
business as a whole. In addition to oral communication, non-verbal communication is also
important. Non-verbal communication can include things like e-mails, texts, letters or even just
facial expressions. If I don’t communicate well through non-verbal means it may have impact
when I meet the person I am are corresponding with. To effectively communicate through non-
verbal communication, I need to be clear and concise with my message. This will avoid
confusion between me and the other person. Having good oral communication is essential in
today’s work force. My profession requires me to communicate effectively with my co-workers
and clients. Having these skills makes it easier for me to become successful and advance in my
career.
Refining workforce capability at the workplace does a vital role in the development of
employees’ performance and effectiveness when carrying out duties (Bryson, Forth and Stokes,
2017). The project focuses on the development of employability ability necessary at the
workplace for social and health care purposes and improvement of effective service. Therefore,
this should emphasize the assessment or perfection of employee roles and performance at the
workplace, possessing social skillfulness, active of group actions, effective administration or
management skills, and flexible skills. Furthermore, this needs to focus on working situation of

problems at the workplace and the policies for clarifications or the evaluation of programs
employed to clarify the features.
Conclusion
My employability skills play substantial part at my workplace in enhancing performance
and productivity improvement. My employability skills have measured numerous aspects of
relevant skills at my place of work. Hence, explanation focuses these concerns in three core
parts. It documented a self-evaluation look, that differentiate duties with work and considered the
following;; evaluating own competence together with object point, act objects at job and duties,
generating ideas for my individual improvement, behavioral capabilities necessary at the
workplace in the first assignment, and evaluating motivating skill I should practice at the
workplace. The explanation on relentless person or experienced development that involved the
following; establishment of correct actions and solutions to address problem found or raised;
defining the management procedures and policies to settle issues raised in a more effective and
efficiently manner; assessing the approaches to raising and refining problem solving skills;
monitoring, evaluating, and assessing the result from time to time and taking required steps as
needed. Also, the description has emphasized the joint group enthusiastic that reflected the
following: group purposes and duties at the workplace; the possible team enthusiastic with their
marks or conceivable resolves; outcomes of the assessment I established on the activities of my
co-workers regarding their roles or activities and provision of plans for the improvement of
group enthusiasm with models.
