INTRODUCTION
In today’s era, maintaining healthy employee relation is very important for the success of
company which can be defined as a relationship between employer and workers. In order to
attain competitive advantages or other benefits, it is necessary that management should take
effective actions so that harmonious relations can be maintained at the workplace (Kumari,
2012). If there will be no conflicts then employees will be able to perform their job effectively
and efficiently by which organisation can easily reach to its decided targets within stipulated
period of time. For maintaining mutual understanding between job provider and employees,
government has made various rules and regulations that should be followed by every firm so that
it can move on towards the way of success without any disturbance. This project is based on
“Virgin Atlantic” which is operating their business in aviation industry of UK and providing
better quality of services to their clients. Unitary and pluralistic frames of references, the way
changes in trade unionism have affected employee relations and role of main players in
achieving the same will be discussed in this report. It will also define the procedure for dealing
with different conflicts situation as well as role of negotiation in collective bargaining.
TASK 1
1.1 Unitary and pluralistic frames of references
Unitary and pluralistic approaches can be used by Virgin Atlantic for understanding the
significance of employee relation in today’s competitive environment. Regarding this concept,
every individual has different point of views even after it helps in maintaining harmonious
relations at workplace (Miki and et.al., 2015). Mainly, these concepts are adopted by
organisation so that better mutual understanding between employers and employees can be
maintained and business operations can be run in a smooth or accurate manner. These concepts
can be understood by the following below given points-
Unitary perspectives- This framework refers to the way of thinking, perception,
assumption and attitude regarding management as well as organisational membership. According
to this model, managerial person will have the main responsibility to take all important decisions
and if this judgement will have any negative impact on business operations then manager will
only be liable. As per this concept, every individual will be assumed as a group who will have
same interest, values and objectives. This concept gets feedbacks by implementing mission

statement and for knowing about the success, it compares the gap between expected and
achievement of set objectives. If it is seen from the point of view of employees, then following
given things will be considered-
Proper skills or knowledge should be there in every member of company so that they will
become able to perform their job as per specified standards (Patrick, 2012).
In order to identify the solution of problems, brainstorming session should be conducted
so that issues can be resolved easily and effectively.
Pluralistic perspectives- As per this concept, there are large number of people like trade
union, management, sub group, etc. who have different objectives and interest. This model
provides various benefits to company like minimizing conflicts from workplace, clears all
misunderstanding that are existing in between managers and employees, etc. In this, an important
role is played by co-operative negotiation. Mainly, this approach is used in the following case-
When a leader of all employees is selected and all decisions related to their welfare will
be taken by him.
In this, trade union takes all decisions related to employees which help in increasing the
motivation level of workers.
In order to satisfy the needs or wants of employees, Virgin Atlantic recruited a group of
experts so that trade union would not be formed at workplace because it is following pluralistic
approach.

technology then there will be no more requirement of employees (Andersen, Nielsen and

retrenchment of employees. Trade union should also take corrective actions for giving
safety to them so that they will not be terminated from their job.

relations get affected. As per this, management of chosen organisation should design

who play important roles that are given as below- Role of employer and employees- While recruiting a person, a contract is to be made
which will contain all job related information. Every employee is obliged to become
committed towards their job and do not use any kind of abusive language at workplace so
