Many high street shops have closed during this pandemic situation because people are
purchased to travel to large shopping. Consumer purchasing patterns have been changes day by
day where people use high streets retailers and online transactions for 19% in all retail sales in
UK are set to be increased 53% within 10 years. High streets are failing during pandemic
situation retail sales growth is lifting to various restrictions for purchasing pattern of high street.
UK high street shops are closed to cut off in store sales has changes in high streets and cost are
increased and customer switch to spending on some technology and digitals services instead of
shift in online shopping that’s why street shops have been closed during this pandemic situation.
Cities are complex and built their environment in terms of political, economic and social
procedures over time (Hyland and Hyland, 2019).
Positive impact for development of society:
 For shoppers, it has a wide variety products are available on online shopping in
one space.
 It has parking facilities as compare to high street shops and wider variety of
cuisine, movie theaters and malls.
 It is very beneficial for business owner and allows setting up a store because it is
easily for customer to purchasing in one roof.
 Shopping malls are popular location to stores as they are high traffic areas which
are ideal for customers for their new products or services.
Negative impact on high streets shops:

Rising business rates and inflation: Business rates are highly increased have should be
contributed many struggles in high streets stores (Masrai and Milton, 2018). Rise in rates and
improvements to staff earning are good thing because many small firms are find it difficult offset
rise in low profits. Inflation means growth are rise and customer are purchasing more in high
street almost half of UK stores would increase their business rates over a year.
Lack of infrastructure: Many high streets shops are faced a difficult situation during
pandemic situation to get those of travelling. Lack of affordable prices, parking has made
securing spot and many more. Many local types of council are routes for public transportation
but considering require a ticket and suddenly it becomes cheaper to look than travel to high street
for average UK customer.
Shift to online shopping: Street shops customer have shift in online shopping because
during this pandemic situation online shopping like Amazon has a huge impact on high street as
more and more consumers are shift in online shopping as cheaper and easier to but their favorite
ones. While overall retail sales growth is weak and online continue start increasing level.
Too many shops: Retailers cannot afford some have some underperforming outlets and
many firms are expanded their business over the years. There is lot of stores being a successful
retailer than store count having many stores that would not kill everything else right.
Various issues are to be identified in high streets are as follows:
High street and town centre become increasingly and diverse situation and it is considered that
current situation is needed to be updated and more flexible (Miller, 2020). They believe that
permitted development rights are strategic vision community has to be developed high street and
provided much housing and plan to identify where it is situated. Too much retail space is
considered that high streets are retail focused and second is fragmented ownership of high street
and town centre ownership. Pressures on retail sector that shop closes in year of august 2018, 28
retail firms have ceased that would be affect 2085 stores and 39000 job according to centre of
retail research. There are number of affected stress in retail firms are compared the recent years
and shopping of internet is becoming popular day by day as compare to high streets shopping
and sales are increased from 5% of retail sales and internet sales accounted for 18% of all retail
sectors. Changing consumer behavior of high streets have to be adopted that rise in internet

facilities are changing consumer experiences that’s why they should go for online shopping
instead of high streets shopping. As they can see that, increasing popularity of beauty and
personal services items in local data company reports between 2017 have fall in number of units
across the country. The growth of mixed use malls which including cinemas, shops, drinks
outlets that consumer should not be analyzed in term of direct purchases rather than make a
shopping area.
Local plans of high streets areas are must be living documents and regularly updated to
reflect changing trends and behaviors should be forwards looking in what will happen in next 5
years. With online shopping, to compete with retailers have high streets to carry out separate role
and focusing on providing experience and convenience (Sokol and Pataccini, 2020).
Government announced that high streets fund includes such as investment in physical
infrastructure, acquisition of land that supports new housing workspaces, improvements in traffic
and parking system and high street changes in technology like delivery systems.
CONCLUSION
As per above information, it has been understood that academic purpose this will help to
develop in order to more successful and it includes speaking, listening, writing and improve
presentation skills to be developed. In this report, positive and negative impact for development
for society, high streets issues are to be identified and how they have increased as compare to
online shopping.
