ETHICAL AMBIGUITY 2
Meta-ethical concept of the Good
According to Hurka (2014), the meta-ethical theory is one of the three ethical branches in
ethics. The theory aims at understanding the nature, scope and how people make their moral
judgments. Generally, the theory focuses on the morality of individuals. Unlike the other
branches of ethics, Meta-ethics is not concerned with specific choices as being better. The theory
tries to answer the question “what is good” and how can we differentiate good from the bad.
Moral realism remains a major concern on the Metaethical concept of the Good. For instance,
may people argue that the statement “murder is wrong”, but the theory explores what makes the
statement true.
Ultimate GOOD
According to the Griffiths (2018), ultimate GOOD is happiness in someone's life. He
argues that happiness is final while all other goods are intermediate since we pursue other goods
intending to achieve happiness. Besides, the ultimate Good is achieved when the actions of an
individual are within the moral realm. Being a good person means more than just doing things to
other people. According to Kantianism theory, a good person is an individual who performs their
duties, not because of the consequences but because it is the right thing to do. A good person
carries out their tasks because it is their duty i.e. acting out of goodwill. Mostly a good person
feels morally obligated to perform their duties. We can say a person is living a good life if he or
she expresses moral approval. A person living well is a good person who poses complete moral
virtues and his actions do not cause harm to others. According to Immanuel Kant, a person living
a good life has attained both happiness and complete moral virtues in his life. According to
utilitarian, a person living a good life is the one who has happiness in his life and his actions
benefit others (Griffiths, 2018).
