Research proposal topic: Importance of waste water treatment with the help of coagulation
techniques
Introduction and problem statement
The term water treatment refers to the removal of contaminants as well as undesirable
components along with reducing their concentration so that the water become feet for desired
usage. Water treatment is highly crucial for human health since it helps in purifying water both
for drinking as well as cultivation. Coagulation is one of the mostly used treatment procedure for
removing contaminants like Natural organic materials (NOMs) as well as cyanobacteria and
make water usable for drinking purpose. Considering the fact that presence of Cyanobacteria
leads eutrophication and consequently algae blooming, removal of cynobacteria is considered t
be a highly crucial step of treating contaminated water (Sillanpää et al. 2018). Removal of NOM
is also very critical to water treatment because the presence of NOM will contribute to the
production of disinfectant toxic byproducts (DBP). The process of coagulation includes addition
of compounds that promotes clumping of fine particles present in the water into larger flock so
that they can be separated easily (Ghernaout and Boucherit 2015). The purpose of conducting the
research is to understand the importance of waste water treatment with the help of coagulation
techniques. In order to understand the perspective of existing literates associated with the
research issue, in this proposal a detailed literature review has been conducted. Along with this
the aims and objective of the research, the methodology that will be used for the study and the
ethical factors that will be kept under consideration has also been discussed in this research
proposal.

Literature review
In order to gain an effective idea of the already conducted researchers on effectiveness as well as
importance of using the coagulation techniques in order to purify contaminated water, a literature
review will be conducted. Conducting a literature review can be considered as an effective phase
of this research proposal since it will not only help the researchers to gather information from pre
existing literatures that are relevant to the research issue, but will also help the researcher to
identify the existing research gap.
According to Sillanpää et al. (2018), NOM can be defined as a complex matrix of organic
substances that are produced in or get channeled to aquatic ecosystems through a good number
of biological, geological as well as hydrological cycles. This variability is responsible for posing
a major challenge in majority of the water treatment technologies, specially to those technologies
that are designed for treating water supplies for consumption. Lately, along with the fluctuating
composition of NOM, an substantial increment of the concentration of NOM in fresh water along
with wastewater effluents has been reported across the world. This in turn justifies the urgent
requirement of developing a highly efficient as well as versatile water treatment process.
Coagulation is considered to be amount the most applied processes for both water as well as
waste water treatment (He et al. 2016). The chief aim of this strategy is removing NOM from
drinking water supplies and this process has already received immense attention from the
researchers across the world due to its efficiency and ability to avoid formation of disinfectant by
products. None the less, with the enhanced fluctuation of NOM in water, the efficiency of the
conventional coagulation has got reduced to a substantial degree, hence the requirement for
developing enhanced coagulation processes with the help of optimization of the operating
