LO1: Understand the growth and development of the heritage and cultural industry within travel
and tourism
1.1 Analyze the growth and development of the heritage and cultural industry
The historical monuments or the cultural places in the world which are kept safe can be termed
as the heritage places in the world or any particular country. The preservation of the cultural sites
or any monuments are termed as the heritage, and the preservation is mainly done by any
organization. The interaction between history and the people who come to visit the place is the
matter of consideration. There are many heritages in the UK and that is why cultural and the
heritage tourism is most famous in that country. One of the main sources of income for UK
government is this business. This is termed as a business because many tourists from different
sides of the world come to visit the UK and since then this part is considered as the huge boost or
support to the economy of the UK. In the initial stages of the 19th and 20th century, the
government of UK took the matter seriously and promoted the business in all possible ways. The
government started gives funds for making libraries and the museums in the country, and the
tourists got attracted more. The first national body of administration (Hill and James, 2015) was
formed in the UK was the council for the encouragement of music and arts. This is the
organization that initially started to collect funding for the heritages and the cultural places in the
UK. In the year of 1965, the education department of UK took the responsibility of the British
Libraries, art galleries, and the museums. Later in 1990, the national art and media strategy took
the responsibility of the industry (Pelzer, 2013) to spread the particular business. In the present
days, UK is gaining a lot from this business. The heritages and the cultural places in the UK are
well preserved that is why the tourists keep their interest to visit the UK. Moreover, it has been a

benefit for the country that ample amount of people can get their employment in this particular
business and that is why the money of the country is being recycled. It is to be said that in the
time of Olympics, Paralympics and many other events, tourists from every corner of the world
come to support their home team and during the free session they want to visit the heritage
places in the UK. However, this is to mention that in the year 2009 this business witnessed a
huge down fall in the market however it has turned around, and it is going smooth since then.
1.2 Discuss potential conflicts in the conservation of heritage and cultural resources using the
case study of Lhasa, Tibet
In the past days, the people from all around the world took the heritages and the cultural places
as the places of adventures. But nowadays it has been a business for a few group of people.
According to them heritages and the cultural places mean comforting the tourists to maintain the
business. This is the utilization they want to make of the places. This is the point where the
conflict arises. Here at this point, it has been seen that in Tibet a popular international resort
group is going to construct a five-star hotel in the capital of Tibet, Lhasa. This is a good move
from a businessman's point of view, but from the cultural point of view, it can affect the local
culture of the country. This thing has been warned by some external overseas advocacy groups.
Free Tibet has taken an initiative to launch a campaign to boycott worldwide inter-continental
hotels over the company's "Resort Lhasa Paradise." It is mainly done by giving he description
about the political structure of the country is getting affected by the infra-structures of the hotels.
The assurance of the Chinese government is there. They have told that they would take the
responsibility to renovate of Lhasa's traditional Barkhor old town district outside the sacred
Jokhang Temple. There is something more to add that is if the hotels are built then the Chinese
tourists will come to visit the place in huge numbers, and this will harm the local culture in many
