INTRODUCTION
Human Resources management plays a crucial role in any business organisation and it is
imperative to have a department related with “people” in a company. Human resource in an
organisational context is the “people” who are working in an organisation, who together for
make up a workforce of a company with the specified skills and talents. The energy and skills
that people bring into the organisation helps in growing the organisation with their ideas,
creativity, knowledge and talents. The prime roles and responsibilities of HRM is to hire,
evaluate, training and compensating the employees of an organisation. Apart from this the
department is also responsible for dealing with the issue the “people” in an organisation face and
address them quickly so as to promote the working capacity of employees. John James Sainsbury
laid the foundation of Sainsbury Plc in the year 1896, which is second largest supermarket chain
in United Kingdom. The below mentioned report covers purpose, scope, practices and
effectiveness of key elements of HRM along with the factors that affect HRM decision making.

Human resource management's purpose and functions vary as per the organisational
structure and nature of business in which the company run and operates its business operations.
Effective workforce shape the organisational structure and define the capabilities of the
employees to work towards the attainment of organisational goals (Boon and et. al., 2019).
Function of HRM in Sainsbury
The functions of Sainsbury HRM is broadly classified into two categories:
Operative functions Employment : The core purpose of HRM is the procurement of Human resource by
identifying the need of securing and employing a right candidate in an organisational
structure. Detailed manpower planning is required to carry out the effective employment
function which is followed by job analysis and job specification.
Compensation : The next function of HRM after procurement of required human
resource is that the selected employees in a Sainsbury gets a fair, adequate, equitable and
regular remuneration. Additionally HRM department of Sainsbury formulate benefits

plans for the interest of employees which include, incentives, bonus, social security and
fringe benefits.
Managerial functions Planning : Planning is concerned with anticipating, forecasting and making prediction
about the future requirement (Macke and Genari, 2019). In the context of Sainsbury, role
of HR manager is to conduct a effective workforce planning and other requirements
related with manpower that helps in attaining organisational goal. Organising : The next function after effective planning is to develop a organisational
structure through segregating the activities of individuals and departments with the clear
defined roles, responsibilities and delegation of power so as to promote effective function
of operational activities. Staffing :Function of staffing in Sainsbury is concerned with recruiting, selecting,
training and development, compensation and activities related with promotion and
retiring the personnel in a company Directing : This function deals with the getting the things done by the people in a
company with a specified set of skills and at a right time (Collins, 2021). Manager of
Sainsbury guide, lead, motivate, communicate and supervise the efforts of an employee
to make sure the organisational objective is achieved.
Controlling : Controlling is keeping an eye on a employees performance and provide
them a reward and assistance when needed.
Purpose of HRM in Sainsbury Recruitment : The main purpose of HRM is to build an effective workforce in Sainsbury
to carry out the operational activities in an efficient manner. Prosperity of a company will
be determined on the basis of placing the right people with a right roles and
responsibilities with required set of skills. Learning and development : HR manager of Sainsbury is responsible for conducting an
induction an orientation for the new joiner and professional training for the existing
employees so to increase the performance and productivity of a workforce (Saeed and et.
al., 2019).
Employee relations : The performance of a employee is directly proportionate to their
behaviour and relations with the colleagues, superiors and managers. HR managers in
