Leadership can be referred to as the ability of a person to influence the behavioural
patterns and attitudes of other individuals working under their guidance and supervision. This
presentation seeks to explore more about a chosen nurse leader by discussing their leadership
style and personal qualities. Also, it includes SMART action plan developed to improved
communication skills.
Chosen Nurse Leader
I opted the profession of a nurse and once got the chance to work in the male
rehabilitation ward. I worked at the position of a practice supervisor. I provided guidance and
supervision to several nurses for doing their duties & responsibilities as expected by the rehab
center management.
Personal Qualities in Chosen nurse leader
I provided due assistance to patients having severe disability, chronic illness and mental
health issues. This provided aid to the patients in maintaining their healthy lifestyles that can
help them in sustaining their lives in an effective manner. Further, I provided the service users
with a therapeutic environment so that they can effectively have a control over their addictions or
other sorts of chronic illness. I integrated and co-operated with the team members so that we can
collaboratively duly provide care to the patients.
Leadership Style of Chosen Nurse Leader
Transformational Leadership
While working within the male rehabilitation venter, I was duly able to transform the
behavioural patterns and attitudes of my patients by giving them the whole responsibility of their
situations. I delegated the tasks having lesser importance to the patients so that they could focus
upon rebuilding their personalities in an effective manner. With this, I aimed at distracting their
minds off their addictions.
Qualities showed by Nurse Leader aligned with NMC standards
During my work at the male rehabilitation centre, I showed utmost respect as well as
integrity at all the times.

As per the NMC Code clearly states that: “To support any staff, you may be responsible
for to follow the Code at all times. They must have the knowledge, skills and competence for
safe practice; and understand how to raise any concerns linked to any circumstances where the
Code has, or could be, broken.” In this relation, I always made sure that I complied with this
statement of the NMC code. It was even important for me to do so as my whole team looked
upon me as a role model. Thus, I could not get engaged in any act that leads to tarnishing of my
image in front of my subordinates. At the time of handover, I always informed the medical staff
about the present mental state of the patient so that the staff can deal with the patient as per the
requirement. I also made sure that I passed on the necessary details like any instance whereby the
patient had previously attacked me or any other medical staff attendant in anger or frustration.
This made the healthcare professions aware of any threat related to physical wounds or attacks.
During handover she always made sure to inform staff of the patient’s current mental state and if
the patient showed signs of their mental health being deteriorated or if a patient had physically
attached a member of the team, she always made sure to inform the member of staff during
handover. This on the other hand will make the health professionals working on that shift more
aware and for them to be cautious when being in contact with the patient that had either thereated
a member of staff or physically attached them the previous day. By the nurse haven’t done this
not only will it reduce the risks of an attack, but this also highlighted the fact that she is a
competent nurse leader.

The role of a nurse leader within a male rehab ward is quite challenging as well as
crucial. However, I possessed certain qualities and leadership style which made me suitable to
deliver health promotion via the usage of implementation phase.
Acted as a teacher
I duly shared information about the state of the patient’s addictions and further teach
them ways to overcome this state and working on improving their health outcomes. Being the
nurse leader, I was further even able to provide my patients with suitable guidance and support
with the help of which they can effectively make the patients quit their addiction from alcohol.
This even makes them able to carry out self management to carry out healthy living in the future.
Played the role of a caregiver
I duly examined the physical, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs of the
patient. With the help of my sound relations with the patients, I was able to make them work as
per the plan made by me. For this purpose, I developed a plan of care and implemented the same.
This enabled me to make sure that all the nurses working under me gave quality care services to
the alcohol addicts so that they can live in a healthy manner.
Role of a Collaborator
I developed goals, in collaboration with the patients, their families, and the rehabilitation
team, that were oriented to altering the behaviour in patients and their harmful habits. I duly
intervened with the team members and other healthcare professionals to ensure that the optimal
opportunity for recovery is provided to the patient at the end of the day.
The Patient’s Advocate
I actively listened, reflected and guided the patients and their families through the stages
of recovery in the rehabilitation wards. I posed as an effective advocate for policies that promote
enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, in order to make the patients
actively participate in activities that takes their mind off their addictions.
Alcohol and Drug Addiction Statistics for United Kingdom
It has been determined that United Kingdom currently possesses the maximum number of
alcohol and drug misuse cases within the bounds of Europe. In this relation, it is
identified that around 1/3rd of the adults in England and Wales tend to encounter drugs for
a minimum of 1 time in their life.

As per the reports for the year 2018, it has been ascertained that 4539 persons died
because of drug poisoning and 5698 died due to alcohol.
SMART Action Plan
“To improve my communication skills by the end of next 6 months.”
Specific: Being the nurse leader, my goal is to improve my leadership skills so that I can
duly communicate with the patients to make them recover from alcohol addiction.
Measurable: The time period for achieving this goal has been set to be 6 months.
Attainable: The goal can be achieved duly by watching videos and regularly
communicating with the patients.
Realistic: The goal is realistic and will be duly achieved by me in 6 months.
Timely: A fixed time period has been allotted within which I will enhance my
communication skills.
CONCLUSION
It has been inferred that the role of a nurse leader is very important in rehabilitation
context. Especially while dealing with the male alcohol addicts, it becomes difficult to manage
the patients as males may even use force or do physical attacks. I had certain qualities which
made me carry out all the tasks and give due care to my patients to make them quit alcohol
addiction.
