Introduction
Nursing career is one of the fastest growing professional areas in the healthcare industry
not only in the United States of America but also in the nations of the globe. Nursing practice has
gradually changed in the last ten years consequently the need for transformations in the field of
nursing is becoming more vital (Engel, 2018). The Institute of Medicine reports discusses
numerous factors and elements of nursing practice, but in this paper, it will discuss impacts of
nursing on nursing education, the role of nurses as leaders and transforming the nursing practice
in the United States of America.
Summary of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report as well as the impact of the Report on the
healthcare system in the united states of America
As the present debate concerning the Affordable Care Act (ACA) continues in the
country, a host of weakness, as well as strengths of the legislation, are given more emphasis. One
of the specific issues is how the healthcare system in the united states of America will treat the
extra 33 million people in the country (Engel, 2018). To make quality and safe care accessible to
all the people in the country, numerous stakeholders in the healthcare systems believe that it is
vital and necessary to increase the roles and responsibilities of the healthcare providers entailing
the basic care pharmacists, physicians and more importantly the nurses (Shaffer, Davis, To
Dutka & Richardson, 2014). Subsequently, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee
initiative on the future of nursing located in the Institute of medicine came up with a mission and
objective of transforming the healthcare system in the country to bring viable and sustainable
changes in these areas. In the report of the committee ‘the future of nursing; leading change,

advancing health’ institute of medicine envisions a future in which the prevention and primary
care are vital drivers of the healthcare industry, coordination and interprofessional collaboration
of the healthcare practice, as well as the payment of the services of the healthcare rewards value
and worth, not quantity of services, and safe and quality is offered at a price which is affordable
for the society and individual.
To realize these objectives, the Institute of medicine recognized that numerous of the
aspects of the healthcare system must be transformed entailing nursing profession which has one
of the largest members in the united states of America. The task of the committee was to
reconceptualize the responsibilities and roles of nurses within the setting of the whole workforce,
societal issues, the nursing shortage as well as the future technological advancement (McNeal,
2012). It is increasing the capacity of the nursing institutions, expanding the faculty of nursing as
well as redesigning of the nursing education to ensure that it produces an adequate number of
skilled and qualified nurses to meet the present and future demands in the healthcare sector.I am
evaluating innovative solutions linked to healthcare delivery and professional education by
emphasizing on the services offered by the nurses.
The committee recognized that the education system for nurses is changing. For instance,
how nurses were educated in the 19th or 20th century is no longer adequate for the country.
Dealing with the healthcare systems in the 21st century is more intricate with the changes on the
needs of the patients along with the care settings (Pittman, Bass, Hargraves, Herrera &
Thompson, 2015). Capacities and competencies for nursing leadership, system improvement,
collaboration. Health policy, as well as evidence-based practice, are vital. Being competent in
certain areas like geriatric and public health is gradually increasing. The Institute of Medicine
suggests that higher education for all the nurses realign them meet the new intricate increasing
