Use of Drones in Aviation
Introduction
This report is based on identifying an innovative development which has occurred
within the context of aviation and hence it has had an important impact over the whole world.
In this context, an innovative piece of modern technology is drone being a scientific
breakthrough, a leap in engineering or architectural design, as well as an updated method for
caring about the environment.
Drone, being the innovative invention of this era is also known as UAV (referred as
unmanned aerial vehicles) (Villasenor, 2014). In this way, with the help of narrating different
uses of drones in aviation all positive and negative aspects of its use will be covered under
this report.
Use of Drones in Aviation
Now days, drones are emerging into an efficiently accessible tool which can be used
for variety of functions from domestic to commercial ones. In this way, operational nature of
drones suggests that they can be utilized for revolutionizing the way human manage their
existing responsibilities. For an example, drones can be utilized for delivering the groceries
as well as they can help farmers while managing their crops within the agriculture field
(Custers, 2016).
From the perspective of exploring the function of this innovation, it is a remotely
operated robot which can fly as well. In addition, drones are able to fly automatically with the
help of software-controlled flight plans. Such software is usually embedded within drones’
systems while functioning integrated with a GPS system. In this way, this paper is containing
the utilization of drones in aviation (Gossling & Upham, 2009).

In addition, uses of drones in aviation can be explained as follows:
Search and Rescue: with the help of drones, we can easily get to the vastly remote
locations and hence get the clear scenario of the location. In this way, when we have to
search something critical or rescue someone who is in trouble then drone can easily utilized
to assess the situation for acting accordingly (Custers, 2016).
Surveillance: the drones used for surveillance are known as unmanned aerial systems
(herein after referred as UASs), which are highly capable of doing advanced surveillance. In
addition, drones by law enforcement can also carry many kinds of equipment like infrared
cameras, live-feed video cameras, and radar with heat sensors (Agarwal, 2012).
Air Traffic Monitoring: due to the fact that drones are software controlled with work
on the basis of GPS hence they are easily usable for air traffic monitoring so that required
actions can be taken (Upham, Janet, & David, 2009).
Weather Monitoring: for an effective operation in aviation, traffic and other hurdles
are managed through an effective weather monitoring. Thus, drones are also getting utilised
for a weather monitoring in an eco-friendly manner as it does not emit any CO2 or other gases
while operating for the weather monitoring (Wood, Bows, & Anderson, 2010).
Fire fighting operation of aircrafts: this is a real-life application of drones which can
be extremely beneficial for fire-fighting operations which are often done by aircrafts in
severe cases. These drones are specialized for providing cost-effective thermal drone
solutions especially for the fire departments countrywide. In addition, as per the newly

released rules within Australia, future operating UASs weighing 2–25 kg will be exempted
when flown over an individual’s own land for set purposes and in compliance with customary
operating conditions. Hence, in Australia large UASs weighing amid 25 and 150 kg will
require a remote pilot’s license so that they can make the operation of aviation easier
(Australian Government, 2019).
Protecting airports and aircrafts: the above covered info and research is clearly
depicting that drone usage can considerably protect the Australian airports and aircrafts as
well (Villasenor, 2014).
Positive aspects of using drones in aviation
As we know that there are many positive aspects of using drones in aviation as the jet
propulsion is utilised within large UAVs. In this context, these small designs can be launched
even from hand however the large UAVs require a trivial runway for getting off the region.
In this way, major advantage of the UAV’s design is that they consume lower amount
of energy than those of other monitoring devices. In addition, one of the best advantages of
using drones in the field of aviation is the air safety (Custers, 2016). In this context, there are
countless instances recorded within the whole world where pilots of the aircrafts have
changed their course for avoiding major collisions with other objects with the help of drones
only. In this way, this technological innovation is majorly evolving the world of aviation with
its mind-blowing and extra-ordinary functions. Moreover, more positive aspects are as
follows:
 Precision
 Quality Aerial Imaging
 Easily deployable
 Aircrafts security (Villasenor, 2014).
Negative aspects of using drones in aviation
On the other hand, there are some major points which can effectively describe the
negative aspects of the drones while utilising drones in aviation field (National Research
Council, 2010). These negative aspects of the drone’s usage in aviation are as follows:

 Uncertainty in legislation: the FAA has set certain norms for small as well as
unmanned aircrafts, yet there are always some ambiguities (Australian Government,
2019).
 Safety: mid-air collisions must be avoided by the UAVs by correct programming.
 Privacy: as we know that drones can collect images and data without grabbing
attention hence people considers this feature of the drones as privacy violation act
(Australian Government, 2019).
Conclusion
In conclusion, with the help of this report a detailed analysis of the use of drones in
aviation field has been done successfully. Besides, this discussion has revealed so many
useful aspects of drones not only in the field of aviation but also many other important areas
of daily life. While conducting research over the uses of drones in aviation field, this paper
has also evaluated its positive and negative aspects. In this way, with the help of newly
established rules and regulations for the drones operation within Australia, future of drones
has been demonstrated within the field of aviation.
