INTRODUCTION
Leadership is an important process through which a person can guide, direct and influence
the behaviour through which helps in accomplishment of organisational goals in the given
context Leadership is the ability of a manager to allow the subordinates to work with confidence
and zeal and motivates them.
Corus Group was formed through the merger of Koninklijke Hoogovens and British
Steel plc in 1999. It was acquired by Tata of India in 2007, and renamed Tata Steel Europe in
September 2010. Corus operated steel making plants (blast furnaces) in Port Talbot, Wales
Scunthorpe and Teesside, England; and Ijmuiden.
Above study will give an idea of leadership and management based on Corus group. It will
study upon the role of leader and function of managers with their comparisons, how leadership
is applied in different situations. describing the of role leaders and that of managers in operation
and function of the organisation & lastly relationship between leadership and management in
Business environment.

P 1 Comparison between characteristics of leader and manager.
Manager :- An individual who is in-charge of the group which controls the carried out tasks or a
part of an organization. Manager is an individual who is responsible for all the tasks occurring
under them and responsibility of the result which must be maintained under a manager.
Leader :- A Leader is a person who encourages team to achieve a common goal. Purpose is
defined by a leader who encourages workers in achieving a common goal and works for
upbringing of firm by various pros and corns to work for betterment of the firm.
There is a vast difference between being a manager and being a leader. Leadership is a
type of skill and the person who has this ability is known as a leader whereas, Management is a
discipline, and the practitioner of this discipline is known as the Manager.
Leader and manager have different significant roles in an organization, a leader is the one who
inspires, encourages, influence and motivate his team to work efficiently and effectively to attain
organizational objectives. Whereas, a manager is an important link between the organization and
its stakeholders, which are employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, government, society
etc. Manager is the one who performs basic managerial functions.

A leader is an individual who supports and guides managers and workers to achieve the defined
tasks and to increase the capability of the workers by providing motivation and support. Abiding
different laws and support penetration which can give a safer working platform to the workers.A
manager is an individual who defines the work to the workers and supports them with the

they are head of the firm. Leader and manager uses various strategies for salient working and
guiding. Leader and a manager are dependent on communication which gives them the result of
the work performed.

P 2 Role of leader in different situations.
The only thing which is constant in this world is change (Binder, 2016). On daily
basis people confront different situations and in an organisation the situations are most dynamic
and changing every next second. Situational leadership addresses these changing situations. It
shows that the managers of an organization must have to develop or change the style of the
subordinates.(Bush Bell and Middlewood., 2019) When there is situational leadership, then
leader have to change his style, not the subordinates to adopts leader’s style. In this leadership,
the style can be change continuously to fulfil the needs of different organization based on the
situation. How roles of managers apply in different situations basically two theories are taken to
provide examples:
Coaching head provide knowledge for the personal development of an individual and
skills to there job related. style works best in these kind of situations where employees
know their limits and are open up themselves and getting coached (Cox., 2015).
Bellwether leaders are having high expectations for their workers. It works in situation
where employees are self-started and are motivated. head leads by example. They can
lead to subordinate depression.
Socialist leaders are the ones who give there votes to subordinates in almost all
decisions. If it will used optimally, it will create responsibility and flexibility inside
group. when deadlines are looming it is not the best in situations because This is time
consuming.
United leaders give 1st priority to their employees. when morale of employees is low
then this style is used. Leader will esteem and helpful to his employees to increase team’s
confidence. This style risks team building because of poor performance.
Reliable leaders are very good at identifying problems and challenges. It is good when
situation of organization is drifting inconstantly. leader allows there followers to check

applied in those organisations which already have managers with inherit qualities.
The Trait Theory: the trait theory may be defined as the way to study the peoples
personality.individual must possess the key personality traits and characteristics to be an
effective leader and these traits are inherent by birth. Can be applied in organisation which
already have managers with good personality traits.
Behavioural Theory: always try to focus on the behaviours of the leaders & its affects
the relationship of particular human nature from leaders. Stated that individual with the right
conditioning should become effective leader. Applied in organisation with highly work oriented
environment with performance culture.;
Contingency Theory: as per this theory its states that effective leadership have three
factors, for example traits, behaviour and situation. leader’s behaviour changes as per the
situation. Effective leadership is the combination of the of traits, behaviour and situation.

Contingency Leadership theory implies that there is no particular way of leading and that every
leadership style is based on some situations, which Show that there are some people who
perform at the higher level in some places; when the minimum performance is taken out of from
their element. It can be applied in the organisation where leaders likely to show their leadership
when they find that their followers will b answering.
Cognitive Resource Theory: according to this theory its states that experienced leader
should be perform positive in the stressful condition. and intelligent leader should performs
good in less stress condition. This can be applied in organisation with highly experienced
managers or leaders.
Strategic Contingencies Theory: This theory the effectiveness of a leader effectiveness
depends upon his problem-solving skills, ability to handle, problem-solving skills,hard situations
and decisions making skills. It can be applied in organisation which have managers with better
problem-solving skills.
Charismatic Leadership Theory: under this theory its states that to become effective
leader it believes that a leader must possess a exceptional qualities and some extraordinary . Such
leaders lead by their key traits and can be applied in organisation with charismatic leaders.
Transactional Leadership Theory: It emphasise on realization of desired result and
outcome. Leaders motivate there subordinates by reward system, i.e. rewarding the performers
and punish the underperforms. The theory of maintaining a warm relationship with the
subordinates and leaders must work commonly to meet goals of organisation Can be applied in
organisation which demands proactive and energetic subordinates and directive manager.
Transformational Leadership Theory: A leader is effective if he can change the
impression, behaviour and expectations of followers and give direction towards a common goal
will lead to the ability leader’s vision. Can be applied in organisation which operates in highly

Various key approaches used in the manufacturing industry to eliminate various threats
in the operational procedury and provide a lean manufacturing, to maximize the quality and
improving the efficiency of the work. Various methods like six-sigma, total quality management
and lean manufacturing is used to maximize the output considering the norms and regulations
governed by industrial society. Industrial standards to the production must
be achieved (Fonseca and Domingues., 2017). Some of the key approaches to the manufacturing
which hinders the performance are discussed below:
Total Quality Management(TQM):
Total Quality Management refers to the process which detects and eliminate errors in
manufacturing by creating a narrow passage to the supply chain management of the industry
which enhances the quality and minimises the backlash which improves the customer experience
(Freiling., 2019). Corus aims to deal with the quality management to improve the functioning of
the production and satisfying customers.
Role of Leader: Role of a leader is to check the defects and strategies to minimise the
defects by providing the best strategy to seek customers satisfaction (Hall, and Rowland., 2016).
Leader aims to involvement of all the sectors of the firm which aims to help in minimising the
efforts and maximize the outputs by providing a safer way of functioning. With the improvement

Lean manufacturing:
Lean Manufacturing refers to the maximizing the productivity by minimising the waste to
improve the productivity. It is done to aim the minimisation of waste by identifying the strategy

management quality to provide a better results to the organisation(Kiran., 2016)

performing the production, processes and manufacturing activities and keeping the current
environmental situations in concern with retaining the profit margins. Sustainability refers to as
involvement of environmental and social concerns into the business operations and interaction
with the stakeholders. The Corus leaders and managers includes the sustainable production and
maintain the eco-friendly environment at their work place and performs all the task morally. The
Sustain program of £ 35m is launched to develop new ways to control different energy sources,
processing industrial waste for the production and reducing carbon emission. The program aim is
to achieve the zero-waste and achieving the carbon neutral by 2030. with the successful
implementation of the program company can innovate their products and processes and can
introduction of new steel products which can combat with the needs and demands of the
customers and the society.(Sadeghi and Rad., 2018)

organizational goal can be achieved by forming a direction and inspire their employees to

measures so that they can help organization to grow and sustain the business market for long
