INTRODUCTION
Leadership and management is associated with the manner in which a leader and
manager of an organisation perform their business operations and activities (Ariratana,
Sirisookslip and Ngang, 2015). This assignment report is going to cover about Holiday Inn
which is a USA based hotel chain, headquartered in Denham, UK. This organisation is operating
in more than 1150 locations and mainly serves Europe, Asia-pacific, America, Africa and Middle
East. This report will mention about various classical management theories and leadership style
along with role of leader in a service sector. Also, management and leadership style for specific
firm is discussed. Other than this, internal and external factors impacting management style &
structure is discussed. At last current and future' management & leadership skills are evaluated
along with change management systems for a specific organisation.
TASK 1
P1 Discuss about various classical management theories and implement them in context with
service industry
Classical theories of management are defined as management subdivision which were
introduced in 19th century. These theories came into existence while industrial revolution and
assists in resolving the problems linked with efficiency in work. In this context, some classical
theories are stated below:
Scientific theory of management: It is given by Taylor and states that if a business firm
wants to achieve high efficiency, simplification, standardisation and effectiveness at their
workplace, it is essential for manager to plan and perform organisational operations in a
systematic way. In case of Holiday Inn, to achieve high efficiency and productivity,
manager is needed to plan each activity is a systematic way so that overall productivity
can be raised. By this, achievement of expected outcomes will be easy (Birasnav, 2014).
Weber's bureaucratic approach: In accordance to Weber, Job positions and roles in a
company must be arranges in a hierarchical manner and projects of company assigned to
employees on functional basis. Also, this theory defines that accountability and
responsibility within a company must given as per designation not on individual basis.
This theory will benefit Holiday Inn in giving work to employees as per their

specialisation so that high working potential of employees can be unleashed. Also,
adoption of this theory will allow Holiday Inn to work in an hierarchical way due to
which each business information will be passed from higher to lower level or vice-versa
in a systematic manner. By this, each department of company will have knowledge about
organisational work and high working efficiency can be attained.
Administrative theory: According to the administrative theory given by Henry Fayol,
there exist five elements of management. If these elements will be considered properly
then an organisation will be able to perform work in appropriate manner.
Planning: It is linked to the future forecasting and forming a structural plan that will
helps in acknowledging goals and targets of a firm. According to Fayol, it is most important
element for management while performing their work.
Organising: This is the formation of organisational structure so that HR resources and
non-human resources can work in coordination and together at workplace.
Commanding: It is the procedure through which manager and employers give direction
to staff members so that all the organisational tasks can be performed appropriately.
Coordination: There exist multiple divisions in a business firm. Manager of a company
is needed to coordinate all functions and division properly so that high productivity can be
attained.
Controlling: It means contrasting the performance level of a firm with expected
performance level so that manager of a firm can make required changes in a timely manner.
P2 Mention role of a leader and varied leadership styles for a service sector
Leader is a person which encourages and guides the employees of their company so that
they can work in efficient manner. By this, it will be easy for organisations like Holiday Inn to
attain high revenues and profits in marketplace. A leader has multiple roles in Holiday Inn some
of which are mentioned below:
Developing clear vision: One of the main role of a leader in a business firm is to create
clear vision about organisational goals and objectives in front of employers and
employees of company. This will help the staff of Holiday Inn in understanding their
targets more clearly. By this, staff of Holiday Inn will be able to identify and achieve
their organisational goals without any complexities (Camisón and Forés, 2015).
