INTRODUCTION
Organization is made up of people; all who put their hard efforts in order to meet the goal
of business unit. It is the responsibility of the team members to treat employees well and make
them feel happy so that they will become loyal towards the brand (Goleman, 2017). Present
study is based on Virgin Atlantic which is planning to reinvent the airline industry. Company is
popular for providing quality services to staff members and consumers. Current report will
discuss the leadership style and management practices of the business unit. Furthermore, it will
explain the process of effective team building and benefit of reward system at workplace.
TASK
Leadership style
Leaders are the persons those who lead people in the workplace. They always work hard
to manage people well and motivating them so that they perform their work in the workplace for
longer duration (Strom, Sears and Kelly, 2014). There are various kinds of leadership styles:
Autocratic leadership
It is the type of method in which leaders do not involve employees in decision making
process. Workers are forced to follow rules and regulations strictly. Leaders make final decision
and they instruct others to work accordingly. Though autocratic leaders motivate people by
giving rewards and recognition (Arnold and et.al, 2015). This motivate them but less
empowerment many times create negatively in the business unit.
Democratic leadership style
It is another type of leadership style in which entity involve people in decision making
process and empower them to share their views with the management. Company take their
feedback and implement their innovative ideas so that performance of the entity can be
improved. Leaders of Virgin Atlantic apply democratic leadership style where leaders treat all
employees fairly (Chandrasekaran, Linderman and Schroeder, 2015). They serve them best and
fulfil their requirements. Company behave responsive towards its workers that is why people are
very happy and satisfied in the organization. Company share data corporate accounts with unions
so that they also get to know about the profit earning of the firm.

It is another type of leadership style in which all people are given their own role and they
do not have to coordinate with others (McFadden, Stock and Gowen III, 2015). They can work
without interferences. Leaders provide resources to the employees so that they can perform their
work effectively.
Virgin Atlantic implements democratic leadership style that helps the firm in reinvent the
airline industry and growing well. By this way it can become able to motivate people and make
them feel happy (Asiri and et.al, 2016). This will help in retaining skilled people in the
organization for longer duration.

Leaders have to motivate team members and have to manage business in such manner so
that it can achieve desired goal. Management practices are such business activities that
encourages people in the workplace to put more efforts in order to accomplish goal of the
company. Management practices in the Virgin Atlantic are as following:
Engage workers: Virgin Atlantic involve employees in decision making process so that
they can get to know vision and mission of business unit. These people share their views
with higher authorities (Huber, 2017). On the bases of their innovative ideas company
makes changes in the workplace practices. This helps cited firm in motivation people and
making them feel valued. By engaging workers in the meetings and practices higher
authorities always retain skilled people in workplace.
Reward management: Another management practices of the firm are providing rewards
to the best performer of the firm. It encourages people to perform well in workplace and
if they do effective work then entity gives them reward. That is why needs of the
employees are being fulfilled in the business unit (Herrmann and Felfe, 2014).
Focus team efforts: Virgin Atlantic pays attention on team working. It develops strong
relationship with others and gain their loyalty. By this way all people work as team and
they support each other in order to fulfil organizational goal.
Effective communication: It is another management practice of Virgin Atlantic. It
conducts team meeting and convey the financial performance of the firm with union
(Antonakis and House, 2014). By this way people get to know about profit of the firm
and they find out career opportunities in business unit. Effective communication helps
workers in minimizing confusions and coordinating with each other effectively.

are coordinating well with the employees then it develops trusts in the mind of workers and they

between managers and employees helps in minimizing confusion and performing given
responsibilities in effective manner. In order to interact with the employees, recently Virgin
Atlantic take support of face to face communication medium. It coordinates with the union
members by conducing meeting and in this meeting its share vision of the firm and financial
accounts of entity. This helps the entity in developing understanding of the workers about the
growth of the firm. By this way they analysis growth opportunities for them in the business unit
(Asiri and et.al, 2016). This raise performance level of workers and they put their hard efforts so
that they retain in the successful firm for longer duration.
In order to accomplish the objective of Virgin Atlantic, cited firm needs to take support
of email system and personal meeting communication mediums. For internal communication if
company uses email and send necessary information through mail to all workers. Then it will
help the business unit in making people aware with the changes and giving them instruction how
they have to perform their work (McFadden, Stock and Gowen III, 2015). Once important
message has been communicated to all employees then employer needs to conduct face to face
meeting with them. In this meeting they have to clear their confusions. This can support in
minimizing issues and conducting operations in smooth manner.
For communicating with external stakeholders, entity should take support of fax, email
system. It needs to send them information regarding success of business units, profit earn last
year etc. through fax and email. By this way, they will be able to make correct decision of
investment in the business unit (Arnold and et.al, 2015).
Effective team building
Team building is very important in the workplace, if all employees work as team as they
will be able to perform well and will be able to contribute well in the success of company.

Tuckman team building theory is the effective concept that supports in developing team. This
theory has four main stages:
Forming: It is the phase in which team members are assigned tasks. All employees have
to behave independently and has to perform their own work. Though in this stage people
do not know about their role, leaders prepare them for their job. Leaders make them
aware with the purpose and objective of business unit and people have to work as per the
direction given by the higher authorities (Tuckman’s Team Development Model, 2017). In
this phase people are highly depended upon the leaders.
Storming: It is the next stage where team members now have knowledge about their
working and company's objectives. Sometime in this phase conflict gets arisen between
team members because of lack of communication.
Norming: It is next stage in which people start resolving their issues and difference.
They all work as a team and contribute well so that organizational goal can be
accomplished. This is the phase in which people give their feedback to leaders and
leaders make changes in working practices accordingly so that all employees can perform
their work efficiently (Asiri and et.al, 2016).
Performing: It is the last stage in which all workers perform their own work and
contribute in accomplishing goal of business unit.
Effective team building plays a significant role in Virgin Atlantic because by this way all
skilled people will be able to coordinate well in the workplace and they will be able to resolve
their quarries. This helps the firm in resolving issues and enhancing work based performance of
individuals (Goleman, 2017).
Benefit and reward
Reward management is the business practices in which higher authorities monitor
working of all employees' and on the bases of their reward it gives reward to its employees.
Reward management plays significant role in the firm, it encourages people and help in retaining
them in the workplace for longer duration. Virgin Atlantic has to enhance retention rate of
employees for that it is very important for the company that to fulfil needs of people in the
organization (Arnold and et.al, 2015). Virgin Atlantic provides monitory and non-monitory
rewards to its works. This reward system helps the firm in fulfilling needs of employees and

enhancing their satisfaction level. When people are satisfy with the firm then they will put their
hard efforts so that organizational goal can be accomplished.
Virgin Atlantic hires potential candidates those who have necessary skill to work
effectively in the organization. Company aims to retain is skilled labour in the workplace for
longer duration. For that it provides salary bonuses, incentives, promotional opportunities to its
workers (Herrmann and Felfe, 2014). This reward management is done on the bases of
performance of the company. This helps the organization in satisfying people and meeting with
their needs. By this way they become positive and give positive reviews to others as well. It is
the most effective system that motivates people and minimize absenteeism in workplace. If
people are not getting adequate benefits or rewards against their hard efforts then they may feel
negative and their satisfaction level may got down (Antonakis and House, 2014). In such
condition it is very important for the Virgin Atlantic that to review performance of the
employees and give them rewards in front of all. By this way others workers will be motivated
and they will perform their work effectively.
Organizational performance
It has been analysed that dispute between Virgin Atlantic and airline pilots has resulted
strike action in the firm. It was found that company is performing well and it is treating its staff
members fairly. It offers amazing services to consumers that enhances satisfaction level of the
clients. Company adopts the culture where all workers are being treated well by their higher
authorities and company behave responsive towards them. Virgin Atlantic has huge potential to
grow well because it has adequate financial resources that support the entity in implementing
innovative ideas for raising performance of the firm (McFadden, Stock and Gowen III, 2015).
Furthermore, it offers monitory and non-monitory benefits to its employees. Thus, people are
highly satisfied with the business unit and they are coordinating well with the others. They work
as team and resolve problems immediately. They share their views with higher authorities and
employer also emphasis on their innovative ideas. This supports in bringing positive changes in
the firm that helps the company in growing well. As Virgin Atlantic is planning to reinvent the
airline industry. It has adequate support of human resources that can help the cited firm in
meeting with its objectives and gaining competitive advantage in the airline industry (Antonakis
and House, 2014).

CONCLUSION
From the above report, it can be concluded that people in the organizations play a
significant role in the success of business unit. They put their hard efforts so that entity can gain
success. But for achieving the goal, it is essential for firm that to satisfy its workforce. For the
same, it has to take support of effective leadership style and have to give them rewards.
Democratic leadership is the most effective leadership style. By this way, entity can empower
people and can make them positive towards the brand. Effective communication helps the
