Leadership Approaches
Available literature discusses various leadership approaches. Each leadership style has its
qualities and shortcomings which rate the style from best to worst. However, it is difficult for
social scientists to rank leadership styles from best to worst. The best leadership style for one
may the worst for another person or situation. Here in this discussion, some leadership styles and
their qualities and shortcoming have been covered to identify the best leadership style. In this
discussion, four major leadership approaches such as trait, skills, behavioral, and situational
leadership approach have been analyzed. The trait leadership approach gives an assumption that
leaders born with the leader personality and leadership are an inherited quality that cannot be
created and developed in a person (Northouse, 2018). Whereas, the skills leadership approach
says that the ability, knowledge, and skills of a person make him the leader. Unlike these
approach behavioral approach states that leaders can be created by observing certain behaviors
and actions. But the situational leadership style says that leaders are adopted by the situation,
need and work environment (Aradhay, 2020). In terms of ranking, situational leadership style
ranked as “1st” with allowing leader to show their skills as per the different situation and
circumstances. The “2nd” ranking given to behavioral approach to leadership as it allows leaders
to act appropriately prior with observing certain behaviour. The “3rd” ranking related to skills
leadership approach as it tests leader competence for leading the team in a competitive
environment. At last, the worst rank (“4th”) rely on trait leadership approach, as it is difficult to
determine which traits make the most effective leader.
The trait leadership approach is first modern leadership approach in
organizational settings. This leadership approach identifies the specific character or personality
