1.What is involved to being a successful leader?
Leadership is an style and attitude which helps in influencing behaviour of others so that
desirable objectives should be achieve. A good leader is very important to attain specific
objectives and attain desirable outcomes.
According to alison robins (2018) Talented leadership is very much critical for any
organisation, reason is without it chaos and mismanagement occurs (What Makes A Great
Leader? 2018). Leadership is an activity of leading individual and group of individuals to attain
specific control over work and activities (Bolden, 2016). Leaders play major role in organisation
development by giving their guidance and skill factor that helps in reaching at desirable goal. For
example, Apple's CEO Steve jobs played crucial role in major decision making and he not
always successful but always learn from their mistakes and tried again. So, it is very important
trait of leadership that give suggestions and always remain passionate to give best. There are
some specified traits, skills and styles that play major role to become a successful leader that
should be elaborate with help of specific theories that are as follows:
According to Heryati R (2019) Everyone become a leader but few of them are good
leaders. In order to get success and get better results organisation need of better leader and some
qualities-that-define-a-good-leader (Qualities That Define a Good Leader 2019).
Involvement of individual leadership approaches in becoming successful leader
There are different leadership theories, approaches and styles which justified leadership
behaviour and action. Some of the leadership concepts, traits and characteristics are discussed
below:
Big five personality traits:
According to Kendra cherry(2018) there are five major leaders’ trait that are as follows
(The Big Five Personality Traits 2019.)
Openness:
In openness individuals who are always curious to learn new things to gain new
experiences are come in high score (Bolman and Deal, 2017). In openness includes being
insightful and imaginative. For example, Elon Musk CEO of private space transport company
Space X, always display determination to remain moving after many disparities even three
launch failure attempts in space X rocket.

Conscientiousness:
That trait denotes about high level of thinking capabilities, good impulse and goal
orientation behaviour. For example, opera Winfrey is very much conscientious about needs and
wants of their employees and make a grievance mechanism to solve their issues.
Extraversion:
In that trait excitability, sociability and assertiveness and emotionality is a major attribute
that have in good leader.
Agreeableness:
In that personality trait major dimension are trust, kindness and affection and people who
are more in agreeableness are more cooperative in nature (Champy, 2018). For example, Steve
jobs focus on CSR activities and launches Apple supplier EHS academy that aims to improve
health of employees and safety measures in industry.
Neuroticism: This trait of leader characteristics is about sadness, moodiness and emotional
unsuitability and a perfect leader have not these trait.
Positive factors:
This theory gives five factors or it is broad area which helps in measure personality of a
person in better way.
Negative factors:
this model can not accurately predict single and specific behaviour and human behaviour
depends on many factors.
Skills of a good leader:
There are three potential skills that are require for a good leader.
Technical skills:
Technical knowledge is about competency and proficiency to accomplish specific work
(Chhokar, Brodbeck and House, 2013). For example, Steve job also served as a chief executive
in pixar animation and always interested in technical knowledge and choose it as their goal of
life.
Human skills:
Human skills are ability to deal in people so that desirable objectives should be achieve.
For example, Warren buffet CEO of Berkshire Hathaway is a good communicator and always
take care of their employees and take initiatives to increase their morale.

Conceptual skills:
That skill is work with specified ideas and concepts. This ability helps in better
communicate with subordinates and assign roles and responsibilities in better way.
Positive and negative aspect:
This theory is gives building block of good leadership but total description is lack in that
approach is followers and their situations.
Styles:
Style of leader should be explained with help of Lewis leadership style.
Autocratic:
In that style leader’s self-take decision without consulting with their subordinates. For
example, when leader adopt that style it can take quick decisions and accurate also. In case of
autocratic style leaders uses situational leadership in which they according to situation take
appropriate decisions that majorly influence on their subordinates and they follow all their
guidelines so it helpful to become a successful leader.
Democratic:
in that leader involve people in taking decisions and final decision can be vary from
leader. For example, an autocratic leader is good and enjoy innovation by taking suggestions
from their subordinates. In democratic contingency leadership style should be used to match
style with the situation so that it can be able to get desirable outcomes. In that scenario
subordinates become loyal and give their major contribution in achieve goals and objectives.
Laissez faire:
In that management not involves leader in taking decisions and allow people in taking
decisions. For example, with help of leadership style decisions should be quick and unique.
In that theory they use system leadership style in which leaders create conditions in which people
at every level can give their major contribution. So in laissez faire they use system leadership
that helps in to module human behaviour so it helps in feel proud while giving major
contribution so subordinates pleasantly give their contribution in organisational development.
Advantages and disadvantages:
In real world different circumstances have to face and according to that they have to
adopt leadership style. It gives definite structure of working that most people want to work
within it.

Path goal theory
Path goal theory is based on specific leader style or behaviour that appropriate according
to employee and work culture to achieve goals and objectives (Eacott, 2015). This theory focuses
on employee and characteristics of environment and then selection of right leadership style then
motivational factors that help to employee. For example, in an organisation leader adopts
hierarchical structure for that organisation have to frame task in which orders and decisions
passes from a definite path. In that theory leaders adopt autocratic leadership style in which all
potential decisions should be taken by leader (Goetsch and Davis, 2014). Further, the theory
supports supportive leadership behaviours which is beneficial for the team leaders of
organisation as it promotes involvement of staff in work which leads to coordination and
cooperation. Path goal theory helps leader to behave in appropriate manner according to situation
and it inspire their subordinates also to learn from their higher authority. So subordinates follow
their guidance and instructions in better manner and it build strong relationship with them.
Advantages and disadvantage:
This theory states best leadership style is one which suitable according to particular situation and
on other hand, this theory undemocratic in their behaviour and it changes if situation is flaws.
Involvement of relational leadership approaches in becoming successful leader
Servant leadership
Servant leadership is one who work with aim of to serve people. It is a philosophy and
practice that enrich life of individual, group of people and build most caring world for people.
For example, a leader one who is care about people and keep attention on their every need so that
they can give their best in organisation propensity. Servant leadership helps in to make
subordinates loyal towards their leader because according to that theory leader pay majorly
attention on subordinates needs and wants.
Advantages and disadvantage:
it helps in improve society and organisation for long period of time and increase morale of
employees. On other hand it works against traditional authority and decrease managerial ability.
2. Can good leadership be developed, and if so, how?
Leadership ability is a very important aspect for organisational development and
individual also. Not everyone has inherent leadership qualities, as per experience and willingness

leadership style and can easily develop.
There are different ways to develop leadership styles that are as follows:
Practice discipline:
To become a good leader discipline is very obligatory, build it is very good for individual
life and from that inspire others. People get inspiration from disciplines that follow by leader in
their life. For example, a leader always follows path of truth so their subordinates always
inspired from their opinions and get fruitful results (Huczynski, 2012). If a leader always
punctual for its work and targets then it gives desirable results in prescribed time frame and
inspire others to adopt that traits also. This area of leadership development is related to 5 traits of
leadership according to which it is important for the person to incorporate own beliefs and
characteristics into disciplinary routine. For example, Steve jobs who was focused on cultivating
excellence at workplace regardless of dynamic of business environment.
Take more projects:
The best way to develop leadership skills an individual has to take more responsibilities
and handle more than describe in particular persons job description. To become a good leader
person, have to leave its comfort zone so that it can learn new things in better way. For example,
when a new project come in organisation to become a good leader, they have to participate in
each and every activity and learn hidden aspects from that. This area of leadership is connected
with theory of skills which denotes about particular skill set to attain objectives. For example
leaders develop skill sets that helps in prosper their organisation and own capabilities.
Learn to follow:
An effective leader is one who can do much possible action to get desirable goals and
objectives and identify fruitful results out of them. To become a good leader by learning from
different people can give best learning to others. This theory is based on servant leadership
theory which specify that leader have to focus on needs of consumers.
Develop situational awareness:
To develop leadership skills, think broad and for long term and anticipate problems

Leadership skills should be developed by critical evaluation of above-mentioned
concepts that give important insights and information in taking managerial decisions. By
adopting big five personality traits an individual can easily adopt different leadership styles. For
example, when a leader always works with consistency and conscientious for their objectives in
that case their subordinates can get best outcomes from their leader and achieve best results out
of them. So that leadership style helps in building skills. Another leadership theory which is skill
based to become a good leader they have to focus on major skills according to organisational
needs. If an individual works in technical industry and want to develop leadership skill they have
to accordingly develop skill set (McCaffery, 2018.). Further, Lewis theory which defines about
leadership styles by evaluating conditions of organisation and behave accordingly. If employees
are not proficient enough according to that leader have to adopt autocratic style and give best
example. So, it gives insights to behave in way as circumstances demand. Path goal theory also
helps in developing leadership in individual by adopting best trait according to situation. For
example, in case of conflicts organisation have to resolve issues take suggestions from their
subordinates and accordingly take important measures. Another one is servant leadership in
which purpose is serve to others that also build strong image in front of subordinates and give
effective results. So, all these leadership theories helps in get desirable outcomes.
3. What distinguishes leadership from management?
Management:
Management is an administration that organise and coordinate various activities of
business to achieve definite objectives and goals. In management different factors are included in

work for a common goal and achieve the given objective in an efficient and effective manner.
Planning, organising, staffing, and directing the work in an appropriate manner is first most
indispensable part of a management (Renz, 2016). For example, manager play an important role
in accomplished desirable objectives when orders and instructions should be deliver by an leader.
Leadership:
A process of influencing others, or to motivate them in maximizing the efforts to
achieving the goal is the best suitable definition of leadership. Leadership doesn't define a person
with authority or power, it defines a personality who works hard for a goal and put efforts in
influencing others to achieve it in an appropriate manner.
Influencing to maximizes the efforts and showcase them the exact path to achieve it in an
effective and efficient manner. Maximizing effort doesn't mean to give orders such as, “Hey
soldiers, let's run and touch that point of hill by tonight.” Instead of it, “Hey soldiers, see that red
flag on the top of that hill? Let's see how fast we can put the tricolour with it... and I'll buy the
best gun for the one who can beat me up there.”

accomplish specific goals and objectives leader have some specific skills to handle each aspect.
Leader by communicating with their others can evolve strategic goals and objectives in better
manner. With help of managers leader can negotiate resources and support to achieve
organisational objectives. Leaders have some specific attributes in which sense of mission and
objectives, charismatic personality and decision-making power (Turner, 2014.). Some world
leaders can be achieved desirable state by willingness to learn new things and leave its comfort
zone. Research show that world leaders by their efforts and diligence come at that stage. To
become an effective leader contribution of good management is very essential because with help
of their subordinates a leader can get desirable results. Manager select best people by evaluating
their skill set get achieve best results. When manager respect their subordinates then it increases
morale of all over staff members. For example in case of general motors it have different leads
and responsibilities of both leader and manager. Their leader Frederic G. donner give their
contribution in achieving goals and objectives. On other hand Alfred P. sloan gives their
contribution in managing all activities in get desirable outcomes.

4. What have you learnt about leadership from your own experiences, on this course and
elsewhere?
Leadership is a very important attribute in organisational growth and enhancement that
give teachings to deal in practical world. Here I am sharing my practical life experience with
others. In past I was working with an organisation which gives me a lot of knowledge and
insights to build effective leadership qualities. It follows path goal theory in which an individual
style is not perfect for an leader but they have to change according to situation. For example, an
effective leader follows path goal theory to provide clarification for an particular projects and
give guidance to reach at particular goals. According to my practical experience I gain
knowledge that goals should be set up according to the situation and work among the
employees should be distributed according to skills and capabilities. It should be distributed in
proper way so that clear guidelines can be given to them. Because previously leaders not
distribute roles according to skills and abilities and it creates chaos. From this report I got
important insights about leadership style by using different theories in which by lewis model that
give information to adopt best leadership style according to situation. Further I able to know
about that particular skills, traits and styles that are necessary to develop leadership skills in an
individual. This module elaborates personality traits that when adopted by individual and they
become world leaders in which conscientious, openness extraversion etc. I also learn that to
become a good leader specific skill is required to get best results out of them. Leadership skills
should be developed by build disciplines and by taking more projects and assignments with leave
comfort zone. Previously I think that leader have to adopt only one style and according to it
coordinate and resolve all problems. But after I compile that report I understand that no
leadership style is perfect for any situation so leaders have to adjust according to situation. This
module gives me knowledge that leader have some skills and abilities that encourage their
subordinates to follow their opinions in better way. Module helps me in increase my knowledge
by understand concept of manager and their roles and responsibilities in attaining desirable goals.
Leader plays major role in accomplish definite goals and objectives to manage with manager an
d communicate in better way. Hence it helps in increase my knowledge and important
information so that I can use it enhance working style and behaviour in organisation. If working
environment and leadership style is according to organisation and work then it give employee
