Management1 Leadership: Self Reflection Leadership is a way of influencing others or guiding others to achieve their goals. At present, leadership is found not in work but all around us. Leaders have the ability to take stand and charge of any situation (Northouse, 2018). This paper describes my leadership weaknesses, capabilities, and strengths and on that basis, a skill is identified that helps me to be successful in professional and personal life. Further for the development of skill an action plan is recommended. Current leadership capabilities The most important quality that differentiates a leader from others or its followers is a clear vision and ability to influence and manage people. I get to know about my capabilities when I worked in a team at my college where I always focus on distributing task according to their strengths such as if someone is good in explaining I provided him to give a presentation, one who is innovative and creative I gave him responsibility to find new ways of solving issues. Hence from that, I identified that I have organizational capabilities that include inspiring others to work, completing work on time, flexibility and adaptability.I am passionate about my work and stay motivated during my tasks as I always try to find innovative ways to do a task and in doing that I keep myself up to speed. Hence, I identified that vision and organizational capabilities are areas where I excel. On the other side, I remembered an incident when I was attending an occasion and was not able to give a speech instantly. That was the time when I identified that I need to improve my public speaking skills and self-confidence as in corporate world instant answers and reactions according to the situation are required. Self-confidence and public speaking are two main areas that help a leader to be successful in corporate life. The companies require people who have the ability to deal with uncertainties and take quick action whenever required (Tang,2019).
Management2 Leadership Skill to improve By identifying skills that I donβt have, I want to develop it in order to be a leader. The skill that I am going to develop includes public speaking skills. Public speaking is considered as an important skill in the business world and for a leader as well. This is important to develop because it helps to win over the crowd, helps to motivate people and leads to effective and timely communication of leaders with followers (Gordon & Gordon,2017). I believe that if I develop my public speaking skills other two skills where I am lacking will also develop that are self-confidence and networking. As in order to speak and perform in front of others, self-confidence is required if I work on to develop public speaking skills my confidence will also boost. At last, the development of this skill resultant in higher self-confidence and strong connections or network. These skills will benefit me and help me in order to be successful in my professional life as I will able to communicate with my team members, helps me to influence and motivate others to attain organizational objectives and to build strong peer relationships. In a nutshell, If I develop public speaking skills, I feel confident and able to communicate with others effectively this will help me to stay one step ahead in my career as strong communication skills are the common requirements of corporates. Recommendations Leaders should possess public speaking skills as this helps in motivating, communicating and building a network.A leader who is an extrovert has an additional advantage that helps to build a strong team.Hence I am keen interested in developing this skill, for that, I am going to spend time watching videos of relatable speakers that helps me to understand the waysI have to deliver the speech and to start at the initial stage. I will focus on identifying what is best in me in order to bring self-confidence.
Management3 Later, I will try to deliver a speech in front of small audiences like in front of my team members, then in front of my class and then try to deliver a speech in front of a large audience. In the process, I might discover more extrovert parts of myself and with the whole experience I will end up feeling exhilarating and liberating instead of anxiety. Moreover, this skill can be learned and develop with practice and time. Hence, I will record videos of myself to know where I am going wrong and what areas I need to improve. At last, this helps me in developing my other skills too such as self-confidence, communication skills, networking, creativity, influencing and motivating others (Reichard, Walker, Putter, Middleton & Johnson,2017). Action plan Firstly I will set an action plan for 3 months in which in the first week I will work on my confidence level by spending daily 2 hours watching the best speakers in the world and observing their way of communicating some of them that I admire are Steve Jobs and Tony Robbins. After that in the second week, I will try to participate in college events and activities and will initiate in order to develop confidence and will communicate on daily basis with others and colleagues in order to come out of my comfort zone. Secondly while practicing I will attend seminars and training sessions of public speaking that help me to build a strong network and to provide me the opportunity to interact with people. Third, I will practice daily so that in the second month I am able to deliver a speech in front of my classmates. Fourth, with practice, training and sessions I am able to speak publicly at the end of the third month and I will measure my performance by taking feedbacks from tutors and friends this will help me to be successful as a leader in the future.
