LINUX IMPLEMENTATION PROPOSAL
Introduction
The proposal is created for implementation of Linux for Sphynx, LLC that have
created a new research group for the development of new methods of electronic parts
fabrication. The project proposal is created for the migration of the windows platform to
linux operating system for sharing data and files with the research group. Currently the
company uses a Microsoft Active Directory Domain an the new system is needed to use the
domain for getting different services such as DNS, DHCP, File services, Printing and Web
service. The employees working in the company have sound knowledge of using Linux
operating system and they are moved to the new group and thus there is no need of extra
training session for using Linux.
Research and Justification for using existing computer hardware
The existing hardware that is used for the current desktop running Windows XP can
be used for the installation of Linux operating system because the recommended system
requirement for running the latest version of Ubuntu is dual core processor, 2 Gb Ram, 25 Gb
HDD space and display resolution of 1024 x 768. No new hardware is needed for running
ubuntu as the Linux operating system. For running the 64 but version of Ubuntu the 3Gb ram
is needed which is also available for using the current computers running the Windows XP.
For using ubuntu in the GUI mode 4 gb of memory would be utilized and it can be used for
providing visual effects and since the machines are not older than 10 years it would be able to
run all the versions of ubuntu.
Planning from migration from Windows XP to Linux
For the migration of the data for the selected platform a second hard disk should be
installed with the system which should be installed with Linux and it does not requires to
using the windows installation. The Linux operating system can be used for accessing the old

disk and backup the files and data in the new disk and use the old disk for getting backup for
the other computer. The data that is needed to be backed up should be identified and the data
should be saved for using it in future. The Linux operating system should be installed in a
new partition and it would not erase the existing files and this can cause no data to be lost.
Determining the version of Linux and Explanation
For replacing the Windows XP with the Linux operating system Ubuntu is a great
choice because windows XP uses similar hardware as Ubuntu OS. Ubuntu is selected as a
replacement since here the applications can be installed easily and there is no need to surf
internet for getting different software application. The software can be found on the Ubuntu
Software Center, there are different popular programs and alternatives that can be
downloaded freely and it can be installed in a single click. The ubuntu is selected and has the
largest base of user and offers a GUI for management of multiple application.
There are different options available for installation and it can be installed using
CD/DVD, USB Memory stick, Network, Hard Disk or supported storage systems. Before
starting the installation the existing documents and data should be backed up and the booting
media should be selected and the language should be selected for starting the installation
procedure.
Methodology for users logging into the system
The users would log in into the ubuntu system using the domain user account and the
root access to the normal user should be restricted. The domain controller should be used for
the management of the access of the user to use the system.
Systems receiving IP address
For getting the Ip address automatically from the Windows server must be configured
with DHCP service and it can be found from the Ubuntu system from the terminal. The
