INTRODUCTIONManagement and operations are the two key factors which operates organizationalactivities to achieve the objectives and goals. (Brandon and et. al.2016). The managers aligns thetask among their employees in modules and guide them to complete the given work. This reportis based on Mark and Spencer which is a renowned brand of clothing, home products and foodproducts. It is was established around 1884 by Sir Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer inLondon, United Kingdom. This report underpins different roles of leaders and managers alongwith their characteristics and functions. It also comprises of leadership theories, key approachesto operation management, importance and value of business management. In addition it alsoincludes the business environment which impacts on the decision-making of the leaders andmanagement. TASK 1P1 Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager.Mark and Spencer is one of the largest retailer of apparels in the United Kingdom and italso exploring business across the world. It has the strong support of its leaders and its managersand that are define as below - Leaders : An individual who is leading an organization has some qualities through whichthey guides their subordinates and enhances their efficiencies. The leaders of Mark and Spencerhas a clear vision and they shares it with their assistants and motivate them to follow the pathwillingly to achieve the goals. They provide the information, knowledge and methods by whichtheir associates can work smoothly (Pihlainen Santtila and et. al., 2016). Managers : In Mark and Spencer, managers are specialised in their field and supportstheir team or employees. They works in team and instructs their staff about what to do and howto do.Role of the leadersA leaders plays a crucial role in Mark and Spencer that can be stated as : Necessary at all levels : Leadership is a function which is required throughout themanagement levels. In order to reach towards the goals, managers and leaders bothmotivates their associates to put efforts and participate in the activities that ensures theachievement of task.Role of managersMonitor : The managers needs the monitor the operations to achieve the goals andobjectives that are assigned to the subordinates. Measuring performance : Managers measures the performance of the employees inorder to identify their strength and weaknesses that can influence the organizationaloutput. They analyse the workers and give them opportunities to enhance the productivityof the firm.
