INTRODUCTIONManagement and operations are the branch of specialisation with in the filed of businessas both are interlinked and cannot get separated to each other. Management refers to the gettingwork done through others as there are many top level authorities who manages the wholeorganisation getting work done through others. Operations refers to the task that is done by themanagement people top achieve the organisational goals on time. They bot cannot get separatedto each other management manages all the operations with the help of the employees. Mark andSpencer (M&S) is a retail firm which has an efficient management that carries each and everyoperations for the growth and success for their company. TASK 1 P.1 Function and characteristics of individual and managing directorLeaders and managers are the two different people that is required to perform differenttask to achieve effectiveness in the work that is done by the employees for the achieve oforganisational goals. M&S is a retail firm but still it has both leader and manager as leaderdirects that what should be done whereas the manager supervises all activities in order tomaintain efficient. There are many types of the roles and characteristics of leader and managerare element move :Needed at each steady : Managers and leaders are needed at each levels as they are theone who ensure efficiency in the management so that the employees can work with fullconcentration to achieve the organisational goals on time. Leader is required at al levelas leadership is a function that is needed for the version and executing of plans and theprogrammes made by the top level management. Manager only set the objectives that hasto performed by the leader to reach the goals with the help of the employees. Representative of the organisation : Leader and the manager both are the representativeof the organisation at their own level as leader is the one who represent the concernseminars and all so that they can represent their organisation in the public. Managers arethe one who represents the firm by motivating and communicating with all outside theorganisation. Characteristics

Honesty : Honesty is the first and the foremost character as this represents that they arededicated towards their work. . Leader is a very hones as he has to deal with all theemployees so that they can work as team. Manager is the one who is honest to al aboutevery thing as he manages al the activities of the firm no matter from which department itbelongs. M&S company has very dedicated team of the worker as they are hones to theirwork and never ignores any thing that may affect their business. Confidence : Leader work with full confidence as they control all the teams so that theycan go according to the plans that is important for the growth and expansion of thecompany. Managers work with the confidence as they know how to get the work donethrough others to ensure that every thing is going right in his supervision.ComparisonBasisLeaderManagerRolesLeaders are required at alllevels as they represent theorganisation. Help the peoplein their work around him. Heneeds support of theemployees in completion ofthe work. They set the objectives andorganises many tasks . Theymotivate and communicatewith in and out theorganisation. They establishtarget and yardstick. Theydevelop the sills in the peoplewho are working for them. CharacteristicsLeader is a very creativeperson and has ability todelegate work to thesubordinates. He is a man ofhis words as his commitmentsare final. Managers create goals for theorganisation that has to beachieved within the time. Theycopy the other to achieveefficiency in the work.
