Introduction/reflection on implementation of health care informatics systems:
In today’s health system, health informatics has become a new resource for staffs to
integrate patient data and use this accurately to improve care decisions for patient. During my
practice as a nurse in one of the emergency hospital, I also got the opportunity to use one of the
health informatics systems, a Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) during care delivery.
Although I need few orientation training to accurate use CPOE, however I found it to be very
effective in reducing my workload. It helped me to easily verify medication record of patient and
enhance internal communication related to any medication administration issues. The advantage
of this technology is that it supported quick decision support by giving alert to staffs about drug
interactions and dosage related problems.
Three implementation strategies for informatics
To promote successful use and adaption of any new informatics in health care system,
three implementation strategies are necessary. Firstly, building professional, managerial and
administrative consensus regarding the need for implementation of informatics system is crucial
to support realization of the vision for use of informatics systems like electronic health records.
This is essential to ensure participation of all different stakeholders in the implementation
process (Cresswell, Bates & Sheikh, 2013). Secondly, training users or staffs regarding the use of
new technology is crucial to promote successful integration of health informatics in clinical
setting. The purpose of training is to support staffs to become familiar with the interface and
develop understanding about system capabilities of the target system. Effective training includes
tailoring to the individual role of users and giving users hands-on exposure to the system.
