INTRODUCTIONOperational management refers as the management of set of activities that are involved inproduction process for achieving the positive outcome. This process contains number of businesspractices like arranging, planning, administrating and managing (Barratt, Choi and Li, 2011).The present report focuses on Corus which is part of Tata Steel group that work towardmanufacturing the steel in UK and Netherlands. This report covers detail about the role ofleaders and manager within organisation supporting with several theories and model. Despite ofthat it also includes detail about key approaches to operational management, its significancealong with the influence of business environment on operational management and decisionformation of leaders and managers.TASK 1P1. Comparison between role and functions of leaders and managersOperation management is defined as a management section that consists of formulatingand management of production process and redesigning of business operations while product orgoods and services. It plays a crucial part within Corus in term of enhancing efficiency thatcontribute toward improving the overall profitability of a company. In this area, both leader aswell as manager are consider to be very important in achieving the goals within specific timeperiod.Leader:- As per Burke, (2013), leaders is a person who hold up the capability ofinfluencing the group of people in order to align their work toward the achievement of goals andobjectives as they work toward inspiring the people to work in particular manner. On other side,according to Susan ward, 2019, an effective leader is one who work toward managing theresources in effective manner by proceed them in right direction by inspiring, communicatingand supervising. Manager:- According to Chen, (2011), a manager is an individual who held liable formanaging and controlling the work performed by employee in order to direct their work t6owardthe accomplishment of organisational goals. On other hand, according to F. John Reh, 2019,manager within an organisation act as a bridge between the higher authority by translating thehigher level strategies as well as objectives in operating plan which drives the business. addition to this they are also responsible to ensure the work performed by lower level, must beup to the mark so that desired objectives can be achieved. Differences between leader and manager BasisManagerLeaderCharacteristicsVisionaryManagers do not set visionsthey only formulate actionplans. Manager of Corusformulate plans and policiesfor the accomplishment ofgoals which guide theemployees to work toward theattainment of pre specifiedgoals.Leaders set visions forinspiring people to achievesomething. The leaders ofCorus develop vision and setargets for each employees sothat they get succeed in theirgoals (Chen and et. al., 2010). Risk takerManagers of Corus mainlyformulate strategies in orderto minimize risk by focusingon controlling and avoidingthe problems for smooth flowof operations. Leaders always willing to takerisk by trying new things. Inorder to ensure continuousdevelopmentwithinorganisation leaders of Corusfocuses on brining changes asper the demand and scope offuture market to perform best.RoleChangeMain role of Corus managersis to formulate strategiesaccording to changesanticipated in organisation toaligned the efforts towardrequired performance standardso that competitive advantagescan be achieved (Cruz andLeaders of Corus put moreemphasise over influencingpeople to invite changes intheir current operation to makeit more effective and regulardevelopment of employeesalong with organisationbecome possible.
