Introduction Operational project management deals with sound management of operations of a firm in such a manner so that maximum efficiency and effectiveness can be ensured. In this presentation, detailed analysis will be made on principles of operation management.
Principles of operations management Operations management principles refer to a process of analysis of production techniques and methodologies in order to bring an improvement in them so that efficiency and effectiveness can be brought into the production process. Six sigma approach- Six sigma is a methodology of management which focuses on detection of errors and mistakes in the process of manufacturing so that they can be reduced. Toyota uses this technique as it allows it to find out errors and maximize its profits. For using this approach DMAIC technique needs to be followed which is stated as follows- Defining- It means defining the nature of problem and explaining it for the purpose of better understanding. Measuring- After defining the problem, measurement of initial process needs to be done.

Continued… Analyzing- After measurement of performance has been done the next step is to analyze the problems in the manufacturing processes. Improving- After analysis of problems, the next step which needs to be taken is to improve. This can be done by using appropriate techniques and bringing of required changes in production process to improve its functioning allowing for optimum performance. Controlling- It means taking of necessary actions in order to control the processes to bring the required efficiency and effectiveness in results so that profits can be maximized.
Lean principles Lean principles are used primarily in those companies which have a base for manufacturing. These principles are as follows- Defining value- It is determination of value from the point of view of a customer. For this it is necessary that the determination of needs and wants of customer is done. Mapping- In this step, the customer’s value is used as a reference point and efforts are made to develop a product or service according to them. Creation of flow- After mapping, the next step is to create flow for the manufacturing processes and techniques. It is needed to ensure that the production goes on smoothly without any delays. Establishing pull- A pull-based system seeks to ensure that the inventory and WIP items are limited and the required items are available to create a smooth flow of work.
Continued… Pursuing perfection- After the first four steps have been followed, the next and most important step is to pursue perfection in manufacturing process.
