INTRODUCTION
An individual keeps learning new things that adds into his knowledge level. The
information gained by a person is utilized in the activities to get desired results. In such events,
personal and professional development becomes imperative to incorporate (Calderhead and et.
al., 2012). It has two words viz. Personal development, which means analysis of skills that
should be used in order to accomplish set results for self in general life. Professional
development mean growth of an individual in a particular role to understand the job that has been
assigned to him. In organizational context, it is a continuous process of learning of an employee
to meet the challenges and desired goals. The chosen organization in this report is Travel Lodge,
headquartered at Thame, United Kingdom. Further, this report covers concept of self-managed
learning, responsibility for own personal and professional development, implementation of
personal and professional development plan and demonstration of interpersonal and transferable
skills.
TASK 1
1.1 Approaches to self-manage learning along with suitable approach for chosen organization
Self-managed learning is an activity under which an individual approaches the learning
process by himself. In organizational context, employee themselves set the goals together with
the direction in which they can be achieved. In other words, it refers to the structure whereby a
sole person manages his own tasks and takes the responsibility for decisions taken by him. There
are various approaches to self-managed leaning that can be adopted by Travel Lodge are as
follows:
Use of bulletin boards: It is one of the effective ways for learning as key facts and other
important information are presented in visual form. Since, graphical presentation of a matter is
easy to catch in the minds. Travel Lodge can place bulletin board on the reception area so that
staff can notice and learn a new thing that will increase their knowledge.
Advantages:
Cost effective.
Easy to learn and notice.
Disadvantages:

Information on such boards are often ignored.These may not be considered important by
some of the people working in the organization.:
Social Networks: People have turned to use social networking sites and other digital
platforms to connect to the world. Social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are being used
being used by individual to share their thoughts, knowledge, etc. One can learn from information
so shared on these sites. Travel Lodge can a separate page devoted to the company on which its
staff can exchange their views and ideas.
Advantages:
Connects with people across the world.Real time update and instant communication.
Disadvantages: Issues regarding privacy is huge.Absence of offline interaction.
Internet: It has vast quantity of data which can be accessed by sitting at home. This
source of information helps in both personal and professional growth. This gives an opportunity
to have data from academic journals and articles written by experts in the matter of business
management along with risks. Travel lodge may encourage its personnel to use this for gaining
and growing the information level according to changing environment (Hicks and et. al., 2014).
Advantages:
Access to huge quantity of information.
Flexibility to learn due to the characteristics of 24/7 access.
Disadvantages:Disruption in the network such as slow internet connection.
Complex work of managing files online about the matter have been learnt.
The most suitable approach for Travel Lodge will be bulletin boards as people working in
this hotel get a chance to interact with each other while discussing things. This is important for
creating a healthy and friendly workplace environment. Also, it gives an opportunity to to
express their ideas and opinions on a particular matter. This increases their productivity.
1.2 Ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be encouraged
According to Kalz and Koper, lifelong learning is continuous desire to gain education for
developing career skills with personal development. An individual should understand the
importance of learning so that he can follow the most effective and suitable way for this purpose.
The manager of Travel lodge can encourage lifelong learning in the following ways:
Self-directed learning: It is an approach whereby employees decide things by
themselves that needs to be learnt. It is a whole procedure where an individual set learning goals,
