INTRODUCTION
Personal and professional development significant process of learning which is
undertaken by individuals to gain knowledge and skills to achieve desired goals (McNiff, 2010).
It is a continuous process which supports individuals in developing their qualities which assist in
enhancing performance in personal and professional life. This process includes self-examination
of skills and capabilities to meet desired goals. It also involves development of personal plans to
meet desired future goals. Principles of personal and professional development is completely
dependent on self-managed learning and self-assessment. Personnel posse certain attributes
which assists them in attaining the benefits of lifelong learnings which further assist in meeting
desired goals in long term. Self-managed learning is linked directly with determining learning
objectives by analysing it need and its plan by which it have to achieved. It provides significant
opportunities to personnel to formulate strategies for their own development. Following
assignment is based on Travelodge Hotel which will help to understand various approaches to
self-managed learning. This report includes different ways for lifelong learning by which
personal and professional development can be attained. The certain benefits of self-managed
learning for organisation and individual is being studied briefly. Report will help to understand
need of activities which has to be performed by individuals is being studied significantly.
TASK 1
1.1 Approaches to self-managed learning.
Self-managed learning is the process through which individuals determines the way by
they can acquire significant knowledge to attain the desired goals and objectives. It is also linked
with setting up of goals and objective by analysing purposes behind learning it also assist in
development of plan by it can be achieved(Elliott, 2011). There are different approaches to self-
managed learning which are described as follows:-
Research:
The individuals can conduct research effectively as a part of their work life which
supports in self-managed learning. The research helps in generating new ideas and concepts
which significantly increases the personal knowledge and skills. It is an effective way for self-
managed learning as it increases capabilities to face problems which supports in achieving
determined goals.

Seminars and conferences:
Individuals can learn effectively by attending different seminars and conferences. This
are effective methods which helps individuals in sharing thoughts and knowledge with others.
This significantly supports in learning new things form others (Moon, 2013). It also supports
individuals to increase their confidence of speaking among large number of peoples and
enhancing own presentation skill in front of audience.
Social networks:
In today's technological world most of the individuals spent lot of time on social network
sites such as Facebook, My Space, Twitter and many other sites. These tools are effective way
which assist is self-managed learning. This sites allows users to share their thoughts and they can
chat with different peoples at global level which helps in learning new things. Individuals can
also learn from owners of these site how they became successful in their life. This information
can be used in practical life. It will directly support in self-managed learning and to achieve
desired goals and objectives.
Internet:
Internet is a biggest platform which provides large amount of information on almost all
the topics. It includes different sites such as Wikipedia and Google Scholar which provides vast
knowledge given by many experts these help in self-managed learning on various subject. By
accessing information on internet individual can gain significant knowledge to achieve desired
goals and objectives
The individuals can also learn from different styles of learning given by David Kolb
which is described as follows: Diverging learning style: - In this style learners first try to watch and makes significant
observation rather than performing it immediately in practical life. Individuals following
these style of learning are good in artistic and scientific work. The observation supports
in self-managed learning. Assimilating learning style: - As per this style learner follow real concepts and logical
knowledge which supports them in self-managed learning and assist in achieving desired
goals and objectives(Zepeda, 2012).
 Converging learning style: - The individuals uses this style of learning focuses on
performing activities in practical life rather than observation and logical knowledge. It

helps individual in self-managed learning and assist them to perform practical work
effectively (Robertson, 2016).
Above given are different approaches to self-managed learning of individuals which
supports in acquiring effective knowledge and assists in attaining desired goals and objectives.
From the above mentioned approaches internet and seminars is best one for self-managed
learning. It will provide me effective knowledge for managing Travelodge Hotel and will support
staff members in attaining desired goals effectively.
1.2 Ways to encourage lifelong learning in personal and professional development
The lifelong learning can be encouraged in different ways within the Travelodge Hotel.
Me as a manager in cited organisation I will set short and long term goals and objectives of all
the staff members which will support in influencing them towards lifelong learning by which
they can develop their skills and capabilities and it increase scope of learning. The determination
of short term and long term goals of each will act as a direction for all by which lifelong learning
will be attained for a longer period of time. As a manager I will carry out SWOT analysis which
will help in determining strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats. This determination will
helps in encouraging all the members toward lifelong learning for eliminating weakness and
grabbing opportunities. As cited organisation is hotel within this may change takes place in long
course of time, this encourages individuals in lifelong learning. I will put pressures on staff
members for performing challenging work effectively this will help in enhancing capacity of
members and supports in promoting lifelong learning within business. It will set certain
challenges for staff which help in motivating them to complete challenge effectively by
undertaking lifelong learning.
1.3 Benefits of self-managed learning for individuals and organisation.
Self-managed learning haves significant benefits for myself as a manager and Travelodge
Hotel. Some of the benefits is being described as follows:
Benefits for myself as a manager: - Its main benefit for myself is that it supports me in
setting my goals and objectives. I have positive attitude towards self-managed learning this
supports me in increasing my competitiveness (Croft and et.al., 2010). It have also helped me in
getting higher position in Travelodge Hotel by performing effectively. It have supported me
increasing my level of intelligence and assisted in enhancing my confidence towards performing

assigned job responsibilities. It have helped me in grabbing significant opportunities it is just
because of increased in capabilities with the help of self-managed learning. It have helped me in
eliminating errors from my performance which leads to effective management of organisation.
Benefits to Travelodge Hotel: - Self managed learning have significant advantage for
cited organisation (Trede, Macklin and Bridges, 2012). It is only a factor which provide effective
individuals for business with high capabilities to perform assigned job responsibilities
significantly. Cited Company is a hotel business which is dynamic in nature hence it is requires
dynamic employees who can adopt changes easily, it is only possible through self-managed
learning. Travelodge have many staff members among them self-managed learning helps in
enhancing their competency level and this supports in development of brand image. The self-
managed learning by staff members of organisation helps in creation of new ideas which leads to
innovation. The new innovation adapted by cited business can only be managed by self-learning.

An individual is only one who is responsible for personal and professional development.
It is our own responsibility of personal development others are not part of it but they can provide
significant knowledge. Self-managed learning and experiences supports directly in individuals
development. There are different skills which an individual must posse such as management
skills, leadership skills, communication skills, writing skills and others. These are the only one
which supports in attaining goals and objectives effectively with given period of time. It also
helps in increasing the performance level of own and assist in providing effective services to
customers. As an manager of Travelodge Hotel I have determined my own positive skills which
helps me in attaining objectives of organisation and supports me in my own development. I have
also evaluated my own negative skills which hinders my performance and act as an obstacle in
achieving goals of business (Busse, Aboneh and Tefera, 2014). These positive and negative skill

3.1 Short term and long term objectives and activities required to implement development plan
Short term objectives: - I have determined some objectives for period or short term on the
basis of my weakness. This are necessary to be developed immediately. As per these
development of time management skills and management skills are set as an short term
objectives for this I will attend various seminars and training sessions related to this objectives
(Jimoyiannis, 2010).
Long term objectives: - For the future I have determine long term objectives which
includes development of new strengths which assist me in long run of personal and professional
work life. My long term objective is to emerge decision making strengths in order to make
effective decision at right time and at right place. For acquiring this it must be performed under
SMART objectives i.e. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.
For implementing the plans in significant manner some actions has to be considered as an
important key points which are described as follows:-
 Scope and content of personal and professional development plan: - The staff of
organisation must focus on the main objectives of personal and professional development
plan (Robertson, 2016). For guidance of staff members they must be provided significant
forms of development.
 Relationship between development plan and its links with other activities: - The
personal and professional development plan must focus on specific needs to increase
level of performance in existing job. It assist in development and act as a next step
towards career (Elliott, 2011).
 Implementation: - The plan of personal and professional development may faces some
issues in its implementation. Before implementation effective training must be provided
for attaining objectives of plan prepared.
 Impact: - At last, the effectiveness of personal and professional plan implemented must
be evaluated and necessary action must be taken if it lacks behind in effectiveness.
3.2 Undertake and document development activities as planned
As per the above mentioned objectives which I have determined for my development, it
is necessary for me to through various activities for attaining them and enhancing my skills. This

plans and goals are significantly required for my own development and growth. For achieving
these I have to go through some activities which is described as follows:-
1. Firstly I will perform significantly on my objective set for long period which is
developing new quality of decision making. For this I will attend different seminars and
conferences with research on available internet sources for the period of 3weeks. The
knowledge gained in these weeks I will apply them in my work life to attain its benefits.
2. I will attend different training session for eliminating my weakness of time management.
This will provide me significant information on different strategies related to this.
3. I will go through various management lectures organised by experts to develop my
managerial skill to decline mismanagement form organisation.
