The Concept of Project Management
Project management is the appropriate utilization of tools, techniques, knowledge
and skills in a wide scope of activities with the aim of achieving the requirements of a
particular project (Payne et al., 2011). A project is any endeavour that comprises a clearly
defined scope of work, a well set timeframe clearly defining the start and end of the project,
and a unique service outcome (Bagherpour & Erjaee, 2017). Therefore, project management
is the process of managing change in a rigorous, formal, and structured manner through five
steps namely initiation, planning, execution, control and monitoring and closing (Payne et
al., 2011).
Aspects of Leadership That Influences a Positive Outcome in a Project
Effective leadership is essential in the realization of the desired project outcomes.
Collaborative leadership enhances effective communication between organizations and
colleagues and providing the workers with autonomy to make decisions. Collaborative
information enhances dialogue among stakeholders, knowledge and experience sharing, and
addressing the complexity associated with projects. Conflict management skills enable
leaders to develop suitable approaches for dealing with various types of conflicts by
employing strategies such as accommodation, competition, avoidance, compromise,
communication, consensus, mediation and negotiation. Shared leadership empowers
stakeholders to make decisions, take up management and development opportunities within
a team and achieve job satisfaction (Al-Sawai, 2013).
What Can Happen Without Strong Leadership?
Lack of strong leadership in healthcare projects may hinder the effective realization
project outcomes. The project success may be hindered by lack of collaboration, poor
teamwork, poor time management, poorly motivated workforce and ineffective
