Assignment 2 – Research Ethics assignment
Overview and Learning Objectives
This assignment will help you develop an understanding of the ethical principles
that guide psychological research. You will also experience what it is like to be a
research participant by taking part in psychological research studies.
For this assignment you will take part in research via the Research Experience
Program (REP) and report on your experiences with specific reference to the four
Values and Principles of Ethical Conduct as described in the
National Statement
on Ethical Conduct in Human Research:
1. Research merit and integrity
2. Justice
3. Beneficence
4. Respect
The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research is available as a
PDF on CANVAS under the Assessments menu, or as a free download from the
National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) website:
www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines-publications/e72.
You MUST read Section 1 of this document (at least).
Further instructions for completing this assignment are provided in the section
on this handout titled Requirements and Grading Guide.
Essential details
 Due 11.55pm Monday Week 12 (12th August)
 Submission is electronic. A single file must be submitted through CANVAS
using Turnitin.
 The assignment must be no more than 800 words.
o Word count does not include title page.
 The assignment MUST be presented using the template provided at the
end of this document.
 The assignment is worth 25% of your final PSY10003 mark.
o REP participation is worth up to 5 marks – 1 mark is allocated to
every 1 hour of research participation
o The four written pieces are each given a mark out of 5
 Late Penalty: 10% per day. Submissions more than 5 days late will receive
zero marks.
Requirements and Grading Guide
In this assignment you will choose 4 of the studies you participate in as part of
the Research Experience Program (REP) and write a 150-200 word report on how
each of the studies address the Values and Principles of Ethical Conduct. Each
report will address one value and principle only, so across the four REP studies,
all four values and principles are addressed.

The assignment submission must contain the components listed over the page
and assessed according to the descriptions provided.

1. Assignment Title Page (not marked but mandatory for submission)
The title page should include the title (Research Ethics assignment), your
name, your tutor’s name, and the assignment due date (see page 54 in the
Findlay writing psychology book and/or the example essay on CANVAS for
a template of what your title page should look like). You also MUST include
the following statement acknowledging your understanding of the
University’s assessment policy and procedures:"I declare that in submitting all work for this assessment I have read,
understood and agree to the content and expectations of the assessment
declaration."
2. Research Experience Program summary table (mark given out of 5
- 1 mark is allocated to every 1 hour of research participation)
In this table you will provide the details of
all the REP programs you
participated in, including title, length, and whether the study was
conducted in a lab or online. In the last column of the table indicate which
of the studies’ you will be writing your 150-200 word reports on.

3. Study 1, 2, 3, 4 (mark given out of 5 for each study report)
Provide the title of each study and the specific ethical value and principle
you will address for each study in the spaces provided.
For each study, in the box provided:
 Write a brief summary (2-3 sentences) of what you were required to
do as a participant in the study. Focus this brief summary on those
things in the study that are most relevant to the ethical value and
principle you are choosing to address.
 Describe how the study appeared to address your chosen ethical
value and principle. Include reference to the guidelines in your
responses by providing the specific section numbers from the
National Statement document (i.e., 1.1-1.13).
 You may refer to multiple elements from within each ethical value
and principle. For example, if you choose to focus on “Justice”, you
can refer to all (or any) of 1.4a, 1.4b, 1.4c, 1.4d, 1.4e, 1.4f and 1.5 in
your report.
