INTRODUCTION
Human resource management refers as a strategic approach of managing people
effectively in the organization. HRM plays numerous roles such as recruitment, selection,
motivation and manage group of people within company in an efficient manner. Human resource
performs different responsibilities such as planning, organizing, implementing, controlling and
coordinating. The main goal of the HRM is to develop productivity in employee’s working that
helps company to meet its objective in predefined time. To understand role of HR and its
practice in the workplace has an example of Tesco company. It is a British multinational
company which is famous as general merchandise retailer. It is headquartered in Welwyn
Garden, England, UK. The brief study explains the purpose and function of HRM and its practice
in the workforce planning in the report.

P1 Purpose and functions of HRM that applicable to workforce planning
The main goal of the HRM is to prevent all external and internal issues and maximizes
organization’s performance by recruiting skilful people in the workplace. HR is essential for the
small and large corporation whereas has optimum budget. Staff onboarding and training
enhances cost of the company. In that situation if HR hires wrong people then they quit early
(Ahmed, 2018). As known employees leave its job when they get unsatisfactory compensation,
lack of career development, poor work life balance and less job security. Whereas HR plays
effective role in the organization such they fulfil all needs of individuals which leads satisfaction
in them for the job perspective and inspires them to achieve organization’s goal. There are five
major functions of HRM which they perform in the organization such as:
Recruitment and selection
Recruitment is the procedure of screening and selecting potential and high talented
candidate based on organization’s requirement. The main goal of the recruitment process is to
attract the talented applicant and inspires unqualified applicant to improve themselves for the job
perspective. Recruitment and selection process are very crucial for the company because it helps
company to manage workforce and supports to achieve long-term and short-term goal in

predefined time. To perform this function, understand needs of workforce by the HR then specify
job criteria and requirement for the job applicant. Later on, HR organize screens required talent
from the large group of people and sets selection criteria. In last, human resource appoints only
those applicants who actually meets job requirements. Thus, human resource mange workforce
of the company helps to meet it’s objective through talented staff (Bayer and et.al., 2018).
Orientation
Employee orientation is another function of human resources which they perform in the
organization so that individuals can make them comfortable while working and leads
profitability in the workforce. To adjust new employees in the workplace organizes employee
orientation program by the HR. This program helps new joiners to know about assigned job
duties and their actual job description, job roles and their relationship position with other
departments in the company. The main goal of the program is to give extensive knowledge to the
new joiners which makes easier while dealing complex tasks. Thus, HR helps company to meet
it’s objective by preparing new talented staff into productive staff (Bilińska-Reformat and et.al.,
2019).
Managing good working condition
It is major responsibility of human resource in the organization because it helps to
maintain staff wellbeing in the workplace. The main goal of the good working condition is to
improve creativity of individuals as result they enable to give high contribution to fulfil
organization’s objectives. It is important for the employee welfare because it promotes job
satisfaction. So, HR always try to give high quality working environment which develops talents
and wide set of skills in individuals which supports organization to improve brand image in the
business market.
Managing employee relation
Employees are the pillars of the corporation whereas good employee relationship is the
way of success. It is the main function of human resources which they practice in the workplace
while managing people effectively. Manager analyse needs of individuals in the workplace
which they expect and fulfil their needs as result builds good relationship between management
