INTRODUCTION
For every business organization, human resources management is considered as one of
the most essential and effective approach which assist in conducting different organisational
functions in an appropriate manner and attain in accomplishing objective sand goals.
Management practices includes training, hiring, recruiting and various other activities which aid
in developing, creating as well as managing all the functions associated with human resources.
All these strategies and policies help management team of the company in order to grab
opportunities available at external environment (Muñoz-Nava and et. Al., 2020). ASDA is
chosen as the base company in the current project. It is a British supermarket retail chain
founded in the year 1949, headquarters is situated in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Company mainly
deals in variety of products and are specialised in groceries, financial services and general
merchandise. The present written document includes discussion about the functions, purpose,
scope of HRM along with significance and role of workforce planning. In addition to this, detail
analysis of different recruitment and selection process are going to be included in the current
project. Furthermore, essential elements of employee legislations and their impact on the
decision making process are mentioned in the present report. At last implementation of HRM
practices are examined in detail which consist of job specification, curriculum vitae, offer letter.
TASK 1
P1 Definition, function and purpose of human resource management
Meaning of HRM
Human Resource Management define as the adopted by business organisations so that
they can provide effective facilities to their staff members working in the company. This as a
result help in maintaining performance and behavioural patterns of the workers with the purpose
of which ,they can easily perform their functions in an appropriate and effective way.
Significance as well as Purposes of HRM
It is considered as an important process for each and every organization like ASDA, as it assist in
increasing the efficiency of workers in an effective manner (Armstrong and Taylor, 2020). There
are some essential purposes for HRM which are mentioned in detail as follows:
 To develop a secure and positive working atmosphere within the workplace where every
worker can easily perform their business functions in an appropriate way.

 To ensure that the business organisation is well equipped and have all the safety as well
as security measures so that employees feel motivated and encouraged. .
 To create a positive and corporative working atmosphere where legal policies are adopted
in an effective and ethical manner which develop discrimination free working situation.
Functions of HRM
There are ample number of functions conducted by human resource managers so that
they can easily done their work and produce positive outcomes (Chelladurai and Kerwin, 2018).
These functions help in attaining organizational goals and objectives in an appropriate manner
and within given time period. Some of the most essential functions are discussed below in a
detail manner in reference to ASDA.
Recruitment and selection: Recruitment refers to that function of human resource
management where the main motive of an organization is to grab attention of large number of
people towards them so that they can fulfil the job vacancy by hiring capable candidates. In the
present context of ASDA, the recruitment and selection function hold the role of hiring skilled
and qualified person so they can fill the vacant job position. Whereas, the responsibility of
human resource manager is to recruit capable candidate as soon as possible when the vacancy
arises at workplace.
Training and development: It is the another most essential function which emphasize
on the execution of training and development sessions in order to enhance the knowledge, skills
and capabilities of individuals according to the changing environment situations. In reference to
ASDA, role of this function is to enhance the skills and knowledge of worker sin order to
execute all the required task in a proper manner. In addition to this, responsibility hold by this
function is to improve the skill of employees working within the organization so that they can
perform all the functions in an effective way (Berman and et. Al., 2019).
Workforce Planning
It define as an indispensable process associated with human resources management and is
mainly concerned with analysis of required and current workforce so they can attain their goals
and objectives in an effective manner.
Importance of Workforce Planning
It is said that workforce planning plays very significant role in the accomplishment of business
objectives of an organisation. In the present context, manager of ASDA conduct workforce

planning which have its own significance. These significance are going to be discussed as
follows:
 The execution of workforce planning in an effective manner helps in retaining skilled and
capable employees for long term.
 It assist in avoiding any sort of disruption and delay which might creates negative impact
on the performance of business organization.
Role of HRin Workforce Planning
Workforce planning define as the procedure of HRM which provides support to higher
authorities of ASDA for acquiring skilled employees and talented workforce by implementing
appropriate recruitment & selection process. Therefore, it assists in hiring right candidate at right
time at right place to conduct the business functions in an appropriate manner (Bailey and et. Al.,
2018).
P2 Recruitment and selection approach
Recruitment
It refers to a procedure of examining, hiring, attracting, interview as well as on boarding
of staff members. In reference to ASDA, it said that managers of the organisation undertake use
of social media, advertisement s and different online media measures in order to recruit skilled
and capable candidates from various locations.
Different approaches of recruitment
This is the approach where manager of ASDA recruit candidates within workplace structure.
Majorly there are various types of recruitment approaches which is adopted by managers for
fulfilling the vacant job position:
Promotion: This is the method where employees post to higher position which increases
their roles, responsibilities, duties as well as pay privileges. With the aid of promotion method
HR manager of ASDA promote skilled, talented and capable staff members to a higher position.
Strength
 Raise morale of the current workforce.
 It enhances the level of motivation which increases their performance and efficiency in a
positive manner.
Weaknesses

 Employee who are not promoted might feel disappointed which increases conflicts and
issues at the workplace (Nankervis and et. Al., 2019).
 This is the method which limits the organization to their staff members and fails to hire
new and fresh talent.
External agencies: It refers to the approach where a business entity seeks towards filling
the vacant job position with the help of external factors. They provide skilled employees to the
company and manager select the best and most suitable candidate from them.
Strength:
 It usually brings innovation and new ideas within the organization.
 These agencies recruit skilled and capable candidates from large number of candidates.
Weaknesses
 They are not very much aware about the actual requirement of workforce within the
organization which leads towards hiring of inappropriate workers in the organisation.
 It is one of the most expensive method of recruitment (Stewart and Brown, 2019).
Selection
It refers to a procedure where a business entity select or finalise best and the most suitable
candidates from pool of application.
Approaches of Selection
Job promotion: It define as an approach used by managers of ASDA where they mainly provide
opportunity to the workers where they can promote from one job position to other within the
organization.
Strength:
 It motivates the staff members which increases their job performance.
 It increases loyalty from the workers which help managers to retain them for longer
period.
Weaknesses
 Develop job dissatisfaction within the employees which leads towards creating negative
atmosphere.
 Resists a business entity to hire new talent in the organization (Banfield, Kay and Royles,
2018).

Online screening & shortlist: This is the procedure which consist of phone interview, job
application as well as formal job interview. These are the process which are effectively
undertaken by the human resource manager of ASDA in order to select skilled candidate.
Strength
 It provide benefits to the business entities in order to filter candidates as well as
effectively handle various types of application phase on a timely basis.
Weaknesses
 This is a time consuming method as it consist of long application procedure which needs
time to identify whether the candidate is capable to the job position or not.

There are different types of Human resource management practices implemented by the
higher authorities of a business entity in order to attain their goals and objectives in an effective
manner at international level. These practices help in improving the efficiency and effectiveness
of workers which assist them in performing their business functions in more appropriate manner
and fulfil targets within specific time period (Boella and Goss-Turner, 2019). Some of the
practices are going to be discussed as follows which provide benefits to both employees and
employer working within the organization like ASDA. These practices are training and
development, reward system, selection & recruitment process, which assist in gaining success at
the competitive marketplace in an effective manner. Apart from this, it has been identified that
these HRM practices are implemented within the workplace of ASDA, which assist employees,
organisation as well as employer in order to attain their target and goal and maximizing their
overall profitability and revenue. Benefits of HRM practices are going to be discussed as follows
in detail manner:
Benefits of Human Resource Management practices for employer
It has been said that HRM practices ensure that the employers of business entity follow every
norms and regulations so that they can freely and effectively work in the organization which as a
result leads them to attain their organizational goals and objectives. In addition to this, with the
help of such practices managers can effectively develop positive working environment for their
employers which increases their productivity and performance without any sort of disputes and

positivity for working in an effective manner for their future goals too. In the present modern era,
various new technologies are included with HRM practices so that it can smoothen the overall
work of employees which as a result leads to enhance their efficiency and performance in an
appropriate manner.
It has been identified that with the help of creating positive working environment at the
workplace, both employee and employer get benefits which increases their overall performance
and efficiency. Along with this if both employees as well as employers are getting benefits and
feel motivated they will perform efficiently which leads towards the attainment of their
predefined targets and goals.
P4 Human resource management practices
In every business organisation, it has been identified that HRM practices are one of the
most essential and useful legal norms. These norms, regulations and laws helps in performing all
the business functions in an effective manner and produce positive outcomes in a limited time
period. There are some common human resource management practices implemented by the
human resource manger of ASDA within the workplace. These practices are training &
development, recruitment and selection, reward system &soon (Kaufman, 2019). These are the
HRM practices which aid ASDA to increase their profitability and revenue within a limited time
frame and grab ample number of opportunities available at the competitive environment. Below
mentioned are some of the human resource management practices adopted by the management
team of ASDA are going to be discussed as follows:
Training and development
In a business organisation like ASDA, it has been identified that after a specific time
period each and every employee required training session in order to improve their skills,

capabilities and knowledge so they can perform in an effective manner according to the changing
requirements. This will assist them in order to produce positive outcomes in more efficient
manner and accomplish their goals within limited time period. In addition to this, it has also been
identified that the training session provided by human resource manager to the employees assist
them in order to bring out new and innovative ideas which leads towards the growth and success
of the organization. But after from benefits there are some weaknesses of training and
development session which affects their overall advantages. Biggest disadvantage is that it is
time consuming and costly approach which requires huge amount of funds for implementation
(Huemann, Keegan and Turner, 2018). By providing training session to the staff members on a
regular basis and make them learn how to use new and advanced technology leads towards the
production of high quality products and services. This will assist them in order to enhance their
overall profitability and effectiveness as a result over all sales of the company will be increased
in an effective manner .
Reward system
For every business organization it is necessary to appreciate their workers on a regular basis
so they feel motivated and perform their functions in more effective and beneficial manner. The
management team of ASDA, appreciate their staff members on a daily basis according to their
performance and functionality conducted by them in order to accomplish organizational goals
and objectives. For appreciating their employees, managers provide them both monetary & non-
monetary benefits so that they feel encouraged and motivated and perform their functions in
more efficient and positive manner. It has also been identified that reward system is one of the
most encouraged method which increase their overall performances by attaining their pre defined
target within limited time. With the help of implementing reward system within the workplace,
managers get various benefits and advantages. But on the other hand, it has been identified that
this is the system which has one lack point which creates jealousy among the employees as they
get benefits according to their performance which creates unhealthy and negative working
environment (Analoui, 2018). Providing rewards to the staff members on the basis of their
performance will help them to encourage their workers to do their task in more efficient manner.
By producing high quality products and services, overall profit margin of the company will be
increased. Therefore by providing reward to the employees can enhance the efficiency and
effectiveness of employees in a positive manner.

P5 Discussion about employee relation
Employees’ relation refers to those efforts which is made by the business entity in order
to develop positive relationship between both the employee and employer. In reference to
ASDA, managers of the company use various policies and strategies so they can create positive
relationship at the workplace which influences the decision making process of HRM. There are
some important and beneficial employee relation strategies which are as follows :
Collective agreement: This is the strategy which includes a contract between employer
and the trade union which consist of some rules, regulations and norms adopted by every
individual while working in the organization. In relation to the present organization ASDA, HR
manager of the company create an agreement where every working is included while developing
the contract. It is said that all these rules and conditions are followed by the managers while
taking decisions so that employees feel motivated and satisfied. As a result, positive relationship
will be developed between employers and employees which help in attaining pre defined targets
and objectives.
Grievance: It is a formal approach with help in examining all the complains and issues
arise at workplace faced by employees. Grievance is the method adopted by human resource
manager of ASDA so that they can easily identify the issues faced by staff members which
affect their overall performance (Muñoz-Nava and et. Al., 2020). This approach provide
opportunities to the staff members in order to express their views and thoughts related to the
issues faced by them while working in the organization. All these queries received by human
resource manager and solve issues which assist in developing positive relationship among the
workers and superiors.
According to the above stated information, it is said that there are various employee
relation strategies with the help of which they easily retain their potential workers for long time
period. In addition to this, collective agreement and grievance are important strategies which
develop positive relationship between the employees as well as employee in taking decision for
the growth and development of future.

P6 Discussion about employment legislation
Itis very important for each and every business entity in order to implement legal policies and
legislation which assist in creating positive outcome and assist in the attainment of business
objectives. In reference to ASDA, human resources manager use some effective and appropriate
legislations going to be discussed as follows:
Equality Act 2010:According to this act, each and every individuals needs to be treated
equally in the organisation without any sort of discrimination so they can perform all their work
in an effective way (Armstrong and Taylor, 2020). In relation to ASDA, HR manager that every
staff member get equivalent job opportunities within their organisation so they feel motivated
and encouraged which leads towards the enhancement of organisational goals and objectives
within given time period. This as a result affect the decision making of manager in a positive
manner as there is equivalent opportunities to everyone working in the organization.
Sex Discrimination Act 1975: As per this act, there must not be any kind of gender based
discrimination arise at workplace which influences the performance of employees in negative
manner. In the context of ASDA , it has been identified that HR manager of the company
implement this approach so that they can provide discrimination free environment to their
workers. As a result, it will influences the decision making of manager as staff members feel safe
and secure which assist them in creating high quality goods and services.
Health and Safety act 1974: This is the act which says that for every organisation it is the main
responsibility to provide healthy and secure working environment to their workers. In relation to
the HR manager of ASDA, it is said that they provide secure working environment to their staff
members which influences their overall performance in a positive manner (Chelladurai and
Kerwin, 2018). It becomes easy for the manager to take decisions related to the health and safety
measures of workforce.
