REFLECTIVE JOURNAL1
The aim of this reflective journal is to discuss my professional field experience of
working in the reputed company named Burger King situated in Leicester, United Kingdom.
This company is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world and creates scope
for the growth of the stakeholders like the permanent employees as well as of those who are
assigned as the inters here. The company provides scope for the interns to learn the skills
needed for employability in one hand and give them in hand experience of working in the
business organizations. The company understand the importance of the internship process in
the service sector that gives opportunity to increase the sources of fresh ideas and diversity in
the organization.
My experience of working in the organization has been fruitful because the skills I
have developed through working in the internationally well-known company like Burger
King are unmatched. The staff who are already working there are very helpful and guided me
to understand what I lack in work in the organizations in reality. Io have a finance
background for which I was placed as the cashier in the company. As Burger King is a huge
fast food chain, I was responsibility to cater all the needs of the company that was very much
different from the retail, manufacturing or any other type of organizations. In this
organization, I did not get much time and financial aid of this internship but what I have
learnt from this corporation is their style of management and serving their customers. The
chance to get paid as an intern cashier was a huge thing for the fresher for me and I got the
scope to match those operations of the company with what I have learnt in my course. As
mentioned before, I have studied finance management in the business organizations but only
had the theoretical knowledge about the operations of the company. All the theories and
academic knowledge I have gained in the business finance course detailed the actions and
decision making capabilities of the companies in any situation but in working with this
particular company I found that the situation in reality is more problematic. There is a huge

gap between the academic knowledge of finance and working as the cashier in the huge
company like this in reality is extensive.
Playing the role of cashier in the production team is a great experience that I have
enjoyed. This is due to the fact that gained a huge scope to learn some very important
employability skills like communication with the employees, mitigating the problems with
the customers regarding payment, answering them, collaboration with the finance team,
learning technological systems that the international companies like Burger king uses to
automate some of the processes and self-management skill. In addition to all these, I have
also learnt the problem solving skills from the other employees work in the corporation for a
long time. The process of taking initiative and manage the others at the time of emergency
and organising everything to solve problems more quickly.
In order to share my experience I think the use of Gibb’s reflective cycle can be
mentioned. In this regard, the six factors of Gibb’s reflective cycle can detail my
understanding of this internship experience. The important steps of this cycle are Description,
Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis and Conclusion. If I want to describe the experience in one
word, o can say that this field experience of working with Burger King is inspirational. My
job as the cashier in the branch were as followed-
I used to greet customers who were buying our products
As the company provides self-service, I used to guide the customers to choose
from the variety of products
I used to scan and register the purchases of the customers
Accepting payments from them and providing receipts or bills of purchase
Wrapping the purchase of the products or providing scope for self service
Answering customers’ questions and providing them information that seek
about the products or services

Helping the customers to sign up for the store rewards and credit cards
Counting money in the register at the beginning and end of the definite shifts
Attending meetings of the intern employees
Communicating over phone.
The second factor of Gibb’s reflective cycle is Feelings. In this regard I can feel the
growth process in which I was assigned. In this process I felt myself to be empowered while
communicating with the peers or colleagues as well as with the customers. As I have detailed
previously that most of the responsibilities of a cashier like me was associated with the
customer, therefore I had to communicate between with them. In the company like Burger
King there is no scope for the employees to remain silent and avoid the problems. Rather they
need to be ready all the time to communicate information of the operations to the customers
and other who seek information. I have developed my communication style and abilities
through utilising the opportunities of seeing my seniors to communicating with the
customers. I have listened them to communicate with the clients while managing the
customer service in one hand and taking orders. I have learnt that if I want to develop my
communication skill, then I have to learn to listen properly to the others. It can be the senior
employees who are working for long period of time in the organisation or most prominently
the clients with whom I will be communicating. If I am not listening what is being told to me
or asked, I will not be able to provide perfect information to the customers.
In the course of business finance I have learnt that that there are different types of
communication in which the written, verbal and nonverbal communication process. These all
have their places in different layers of the entire communication system. Now when I am
placed as the intern in the Burger King I have found that different types of the
communication system are used in different situations. As there is no difference in the
communication style of the store manage, production manager, sales manager and their team
