INTRODUCTIONTo manage operations and functional activities effectually in a firm is not a simpletask and requires a lot of efforts. This is the reason; it is important for organisation to adopt asystematic and strategic approach so that desired operations can be performed in the decidedway (Slack, 2015). In the present report, ASDA plc. will be selected which is one of theleading British Supermarket chains in UK. Here, there will be discussion on roles and traitsand duties that leader and manager performs in organisation along with the way in which it isapplied in different situations. Further, different approaches in relation with the operationsmanagement will be studied in the report. Also, importance and value of operationsmanagement in achieving business objectives will be understood along with different relatedconcepts. TASK 1P1. Duties and traits of ASDA’s manager and leaderBeing in the retail industry of UK, ASDA has various roles and responsibilities thatare performed by the leader and manager of company. As the firm is a supermarket retailer,its management structure is complex with having many leaders and managers who have theirown roles and characteristics by which they perform their work. Leadership and managementare two different terms but often, they are being used interchangeably. To become a goodmanager, at first, a person needs to be an effective leader (Fernie and Sparks, 2014).However, to be a leader, being manager is not necessary. Leadership is the ability of a personto guide, direct, support and influence people in a way that they will follow his/herinstructions. On the other hand, management is an art of a person by which he/she gets workdone by others. However, undertransactional leadership style,leader provides rewards andpunishments to followers forthe compliance and non-compliance of targets in orderto motivate them to give moreefforts for the attainment ofgoals. problems that occur in work.His main focus is always onorganisational structure andgoals as well as availability ofresources in terms ofmanpower, finance andtechnological. His personalityis more of persistence, analysis,strong will and intelligence.Major functions that managerperforms are planning,organising, controlling anddirecting. Under planning, theymake plans and policies forachieving targets and then inorganising, work is delegatedby them to all peopledepending on their positions inthe firm. Controlling refers thatmanagers time to time checkthat whether the actions aregoing as per the set targets ornot and if not, correctivemeasures are suggested bythem (Hallinger, 2013).Directing is that they guide andsupport the employees toperform their work effectually.FocusLeader always focus onleading people in ASDA sothat they can perform theirtasks in a manner which isdesired by the management.Manager’s main role is to getthe work well managed so thatthere would not be any delay inthe accomplishment of goals.OrientationA leader’s main emphasis isalways on people and theirefforts towards performingtasks.However, manager in ASDA isalways task oriented whosemajor emphasis is oncompletion of tasks as his mainis to attain the organisationalgoals on time.OutcomesLeader always wantsachievements in some or theother way (Gilmour, 2013).While, manager concentrateson getting the final results in aneffective and efficient manner.Role in decision makingIn ASDA, his role isfacilitative who takes thedecision and implements thesame.
