CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Talent management is all about performing activities that start from attraction of candidates
and ends to their retention within business or their happily separation. In another words it can be
discussed or considered as employment lifecycle that consists of 6 stages through which all
employees have to go. If employees stay with business for the long run or leave organization
happily then it can be known as improved talent management (Mahfoozi and et.al., 2018).
Leaders and line managers play a vital role in managing talent as they make use of appropriate
leadership and management style that makes employees feel valued and motivated. Motivation
leads to satisfaction and employees’ satisfaction is the main key of success of company and
better talent management.
Background
Talent management can be defined as a process of attracting, on boarding, training,
motivating and retaining talent within business. This study is based on Arcadia group, British
multinational fashion retailing company. It was mainly known as its previous parent company of
Burton, Dorothy, Topman, Topshop and others. This study is striving hard for being in the
competition after Covid-19 pandemic. This study will help this retailer out in managing talent
and regaining image. This present study is going to discuss the main concept of talent
management along with roles of line managers and leaders in managing talent with literature
review. It will further discuss some appropriate strategies by which leaders of Arcadia group can
increase staff retention rate or can develop employees’ well-being. It shows importance of
research methodology as how it can help scholar in completing as well as making research study
successful.

Which strategies should line managers develop for decreasing staff turnover and
managing talent?
Rationale
This study is all about talent management and identifying roles that line managers and
leaders play for managing talent and to help their company in increasing staff retention rate that
is vital for their image and success. The main reason behind selecting this topic is to help fashion
retailers of the UK in managing talent or increasing employees’ retention rate for being in the
competition. It is found that due to Covid-19 pandemic, fashion retailers and many other
companies are facing several challenges and employees also striving hard in getting employment
opportunities (Vaiman and et.al., 2018). So, this study will help them out in knowing suitable
strategies and roles of leaders in managing talent that would be beneficial for country as well as
it can improve economy. This topic has great scope as it can help students at academic level as
well. It can help them out in knowing importance of managing talent and importance of
leadership and it can help them out in the future in developing career by supporting company in
managing talent. Also, it is one of my interesting topics as I wanted to know about talent
management in detail. So, this topic has been selected.
